Rosetta stone
« on: October 26, 2010, 07:43:14 AM »
Has anyone here used Rosetta Stone (the language software) to learn Japanese or maybe not used it to learn but to help them? Or does anyone know if it actually works? I do have some knowledge of the japanese language beyond anime and manga, but I herd that rosetta stone works really well just not for japanese .... does anyone have any recomendation? My college doesn't offer a Japanese language class and in the US there are not many colleges that do offer formal Japanese language classes. So does anyone have knowledge of Rosetta stone or any other places or anything really that I could use?

*EDIT*

I am asking because I am planning a trip to japan after i graduate and save some money .... 4-6 years away ... and i would like to learn now and not sound like a dumb tourist who isnt confident in the language and be stumbling all over my words ... i know that 4-6 years to master a language is a short time (atleast i think it is) but i would like to start sometime soon. ... i might even be considering a job as an english teacher over there someday

Use Triple Play Plus Japanese, and have a Katakana + Hiragana chart on your table. Katakana has two modes, one is the english tuned version "looks more like simple-ish english chars" the other is simple japanese version. Hiragana being the extreme. The one i like is the meiji era speech but that's another story.

KE sounds like KEN. Ken which is the translation for "Sword" OMG THE CHARACTER LOOKS LIKE A SWORD!
Use this tactic to finish this quickly.

Save up money and go with a tour group. You won't need to know any language.

Or, buy a book and study. I've heard lots of praise about the Genki series, and the "minna no nihongo" book.

I'm not a huge fan of Rosetta Stone. Somehow the methods used seem.... odd to me and somewhat irrelevant.

It's old but very good! Gives you a blue grid of japanese characters of which you must identify by voice.
When you can read a raw scanlation without twitching your eyes you've won the game.

Gah i forgot, there is Katakana, Kanji then Hiragana ( :  :) i don't even know what is the popular manga choice

Rosetta Stone isn't bad so far (level 1 unit 3) although there are a few flaws.

1) It does not show how to write/draw hiragana and katakana.

2) By its very nature, it doesn't explain counter words http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_counter_word.

isnt triple play plus kinda old? 97'? still works though?

hiragana is used for particles, endings and some other things. katakana is used for foreign words. kanji is used for regular words.

as far as i know, the above is the norm.

Are you using home premium? If yes, no can do...

If using professional/ultimate then you can try compatibility mode.

Ah he's right Katakana is the foreign english looking characters, Kanji is normal japanese mode, Hiragana is extreme. I'm currently studying the Kanji.

Have you got Triple Play Plus Japanese working yet Xenoran?

A tour group is quite restrictive in what you can do, a good thing about going without a tour is that you can explore different parts of cities on your own.  No way I'm going to Akiba or Harajuku with a tour group.

I recommend against using only software or books.  By far the easiest and most efficient way to learn something is by speaking, so if you are really serious then take lessons from a teacher.  Then you can supplement with other tools, which does help quite a bit.

I've been to Japan once a year for 4 years, so I've picked up a little bit of the language.

NRG is a special type of ISO file. Go and download PowerISO and Nero from Piratesbay then burn them into a CD.

Ok it took awhile but i've taken the files from my cd and uploaded them to the internet: https://www.dropbox.com/home#/Public::: copy them, and burn them into a cd.

If you can't log in then sign up here: http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTEzMTgwOTkwOQ

If you can't burn it into a cd then find the setup file and activate it. When it finishes installing go to C:\TPLAYJP and click on PRESENT
