Rosetta Stone works if you ignore the way they try to teach you.

I pirated the Japanese version of Rosetta Stone about two years ago, and found it to be absolutely worthless. It doesn't explain anything, and forces you to just figure stuff out. Starting from knowing nothing, I can see how this would work for learning Spanish or French, but for Japanese it just didn't work. Japanese is just too different from English.

However, after working my way through "Japanese in Mangaland" by Marc Bernabe, it all makes perfect sense now. The book gives a really good crash course on Japanese grammar and sentence structure. Now knowing what Japanese grammar particles are and what they mean, the fact that Japanese is actually backwards from English, and being able to read both alphabets and some kanji Rosetta Stone makes perfect sense. When they introduce new verbs, I can automatically say, "Oh, they're using the te-form. From that I can figure out that the dictionary and polite forms are A and B, and the negative, past, and past negative forms are C/D, E/F, and G/H." Also, when it introduces new words, you're supposed to just figure out what they mean through context, but screw that. Look them up in a dictionary. The images they use are small and can be hard to see. Also, some of them are just stupid. For example, when they introduce the concept of "new" and "old" they try to show it with cars. Problem is, the "new" cars are actually quite old at this point.

For about the last week and a half, I've been doing about 2-3 lessons per day of Rosetta Stone. Not only is it now super easy, this time I've actually set it to the hardest mode where it uses kanji, and by the end of the lessons, I can read along with it. So far I've gone through all but one lesson without getting any questions wrong (not counting the ones where I'm not paying attention or accidentally clink the wrong one).

Click on startup menu, to go Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts.
click on Change User Account Control settings, drag the lever down to Never notify, click ok then try again.

If that doesn't work then right click on the exe file click on the compatibility tab and set the compatibility to Windows XP Service Pack 3.

In highschool my school did Rosetta Stone as a shot in the dark for the German class and it seemed to work alot better for me than text books. But everyones learning abillities are different so it may work for you but not someone else always keep that in mind. I give it a +1 personally

The main problem with learning Japanese is that it's the most distant language from English, and considered to be the hardest language for native English speakers to learn out of all major languages known to man. The foreign state intitute I believe it was in the US has once placed together estimates on learning various languages and japanese came out of the box with over 2000 hours of studying and > 6 months spending within the country itself required to learn the language to a basic level.

So taking it you do have a life, including a job/studies/friends/etc you most likely will not have much more time than 10 hours a weeks tops for studying Japanese on top. You'll probably skip some weeks, even with dedication. And might come down to 450 hours a year. It would take roughly 4.5 years then, plus an extra half year abroad in Japan, to learn speaking it onto a basic level.

You're 5 years older, and then what :p. You'll need to remain using it in order to remain fluent in it.

With your 4-6 years to go though, that gives you exactly the right amount of time to get to a basic level if you keep up with those 10 hours a week.

Next to that, if you want to learn a language so vastly different from your own or even remotely different my tip would be start from the beginning. Where did you begin with your English or whichever your native English is? Probably your ABC's, after all you're getting a new alphabet to learn; picture dictionaries, etc. If you want to speed it up for yourself drag it out of just that, and apply it to your every day objects. Post-it's all over the place with the Japanese written on it. Next level is primary school books, working your way up slowly.

And one definite tip, try to get your hands on some real japanese audio, news broadcasts, talk shows, whatever. Just to get the hang of what Japanese sounds like. After all sounding like a dumb tourist is one thing, but if you'd end up having taught yourself an anime accent, you'll just look like a complete idiot :p.

It's like once I met some guy who learned speaking English by watching Monty Python films and Blackadder.... just no ;D
