Very Limited Upload Speed - Comcast
7godeohs:
Hey all,
I am trying to increase my ratio to help myself and share the wealth of course - but I am experiencing extremely terrible upload speeds. It's in the area of 0.1kB/s.
Torrents from other sites are not an issue and upload at the rate limited by my client.
I have searched for torrents based upon the largest number of leechers (and/or Freeleech torrents) and the fewest number of seeders. I have downloaded certain torrents for the sole purpose of seeding them. However, after downloading 6GB of Clannad in 1080p and being unable to upload at a decent rate this has only served to decrease my ratio further.
I'm using uTorrent and have tried both 'Enabling' and 'Forcing' encrytion will little change.
Is anyone else who uses Comcast having this issue? Any workarounds thus far? I really enjoy this site and its community and I would hate to lose out on sharing and being able to share because of my crappy ISP and their traffic shaping.
blubart:
1) 154:21 leecher ratio is NOT a large number of lechers and few seeders
2) leeching a freeleech torrent (like Clannad in 1080p) definitely had no negative impact on your ratio
3) if it would be traffic shaping by your ISP you would likely experience the same problem for other torrents
4) you'll only be able to saturate your upstream by seeding a good number of torrents
i've no idea what you are actually complaining about - it seems like you are capable of seeding (13.02 GB uploaded on Clannad?) and keeping a good ratio (>1.0) perfectly fine.
known workarounds: patience.

I should have been more clear. The Clannad 1080p torrent that currently has the 154:21 seeder/leecher ratio that you mention was a torrent I downloaded in the past - my upload speeds were great at that point, which reflect the 13GB of upload you see. I'm not uploading that anymore, here's why: At a later time, and with no changes to my ISP or client configuration the Clannad torrent basically stopped uploading entirely and after uploading only 1MB in 2 weeks I removed the torrent. Regardless of the number of seeders I believe that to be rather low upload speed.
I understand that fluctuations of upload speed happen over time and if there a many people seeding the torrent those who upload will have lower upload speeds due to the distribution of required resources among more and more people - however, I would imagine that 1MB in 2 weeks is rather low.
I am currently downloading a 30GB torrent at 1.5MB/s and uploading at only 0.1kB/s - I'm going to monitor my upload bandwidth over time and see if it increases. If it does not I may be in trouble.
Even if I have patience, BakaBT probably won't. My issue is that I have to download files to be able to share them and after my ratio is pretty much blown away by my initial download I will receive a warning - if my upload speed is crap I have no way of raising my ratio and I will get booted. Isn't that how the system works? I would use a freeleech torrent but even if it wouldn't lower my ratio it won't help much against my ratio that has already been affected by past non-freeleeched torrents if I only push 1MB in 2 weeks.
I have patience, but how long will BakaBT put up with a crappy ratio?
*Also, is there any way you know of to search for torrents tagged as Freeleech? I see the option for Bonus torrents but not Freeleech.
Enzedder:
We prefer you keep a ratio of 0.5 or above however you can drop below that without too much worry. Start getting worried if it doesn't come back up though and continues to fall.
The main thing is not the amount that you seed per torrent but overall. You will never survive seeding a single torrent. You need to seed a large number of torrents however do not seed a ridiculous number. Seeding too many will distribute your upload too far across too many torrents you will be a waste of an uploader. You need to find a nice number of torrents which will give you a steady upload. Try not to stop torrents from seeding or removing them until you have achieved this point. Freeleech torrents are a way of achieving this point without a hit to your ratio.
If you are worried about trying to build this base I would suggest you take a look into 2 guides. One being the How to fix your ratio and the other being Re-seeding torrents on BBT from external sources both of which are found in our Wiki.
For Freeleech button I suggest you do a search next time. We have this idea come up a few times that last one being within the past week. You can find a response here.

I don't see how that's a problem to the seeder, since it's global ratio that matters, not individual torrent ratios. I find it more beneficial to be running ~100 at once, because of the greater chance of snagging leechers. But in any case, that's kinda irrelevant to OP's problem.
Anyway, at OP, that's a rather odd problem. I don't live in an area that Comcast services. You might want to check with your ISP to see if there were any recent torrent throttling measures put in that somehow limit upload but not download (not likely, since you say it only affects BBT torrents). Also try resetting your network (shut off everything and power back on).
If worse comes to worst, there are, of course, many other sources of anime than BBT, as you should know already. I personally usually use BBT as a last resort, for the times when I can't find what I'm looking for anywhere else. If you find through your close monitoring that your upload is really next to nothing, your best course of action would be to finish what you have already started downloading from BBT and don't add any new ones.
You also have the option of downloading off the public BBT tracker, if your ego/dignity will let you. Search the forums if you want to try it, or just read billanam's post.
Seedboxes are another option. Use Google. You also need a decent amount of cash, and the ability to pay online.
Back to the problem. You're sure you aren't getting any tracker error messages? And you didn't recently install some new torrent related thing, like PeerGuardian, right? And yes, 1MB in 2 weeks is very bad. Even seeding a 150/1 torrent you can expect to upload at least 100KB in 24 hours on dial-up speeds.
And about your question about getting booted for poor ratio, you won't. You will be warned when your ratio hits the threshold, which is not known but I think is around 0.100. At this point, every torrent that you are not specifically seeding (i.e. torrents you are still downloading) will halt, while torrents you are seeding will continue seeding. You won't be booted from the site. In fact, you will still retain all of your account abilities, with the exception of being a Power User (you might be demoted back to User when your ratio falls below 0.500), meaning you won't be able to offer anymore.
