Seeding
« on: November 08, 2010, 11:13:31 PM »
Recently I decided my internet sucks too much for me to be a member on a site like this.

Naturally anime is way to awesome to let this stop me enjoying it, so I decided to give back to the commmunity by buying a seedbox instead ;)

Anyone else feel the same way?

Even when I had DSL with ~768kbps upload I managed to keep my ratio high, now it's even easier. Even with DSL the main problem for me was that there were less leechers on private trackers like BBT - I could seed a public torrent to ratio =10 easily, but private torrents were more difficult because of the high seed/leech ratio.

I find that almost half I download on this site is free leech (now a days, majority of my download is prior to free leech being added), so I have no problems keeping a good ratio.

A seedbox is a great plan if you dont mind paying for it.
I happen to run on a T3 connect and not very much DL so I've never had to. People with limited bandwidth or slow connections... A seedbox is a great alternative.
ps- props on wanting to actually give back!

Having a SB is great. Getting my content via SSL FTP is great, maxes out my connection every time (if it did not something is wrong with the server).

How do seedboxes work? Are they like servers that are used for hosting websites?

Yes.  You pay, and they download the torrent for you and seed it.  They usually have very fast connection, like 100mbits

Seedbox? Maybe.... but I prefer doing this over my own line.

I've never had problems seeding my leeched torrents. Most of the time I just leave my completed torrents on while downloading something else. That way, my ratio usually spends its life between 1 and 10.

Easy way to increase your ratio is to download a freeleech torrent and remain seeding it after completition.

getting a dedicated seedbox is more expensive than getting a highspeed internet connection here. I have a computer that exists for the sole purpose of seeding torrents and warming the room in winter :P

Seeding on BBT is nice, but there is one problem - I have to keep the files on my hard drive. When I manage to get 100-200GB of watched anime I want to write it to tape to free up some disk space and it's harder to do that now because I want to keep seeding and there is no way that I could seed from my tape drive.

I usually seed what i DL from BBT, problem is people get same files early on (when shows are aired) and the try to seed, but how do you seed when there are no leechers ?

when I leave files for seeding for a few constant days, and see the data uploaded is lower than 2mb, seriously... hard to seed sometimes.

I keep wondering how I got to my stats... must have been something popular that I was uploading so much.

I've got 53 torrents seedable from here, so even if I get 2kb/s per I still hit my UL speed limit.

And I've got a friend who's been DLing here for a while, so he gave me a shitload of stuff I can seed without even download.

How do you buy a seedbox? I have a really good connection (pretty powerful, check my UL/DL on the frontpage). Where did you actually purchase it from anyways?

I do not really need a seedbox. Having 50mbps up is awesome, keeps my ratio good enough for the rest of my life. Too bad that BBT is over saturated with seeders and thus I hardly upload with speed higher than 100 KB/s. That being said I always seed back, forever. Unless I lose my torrents, which did happen and thus my ratio went down by 3 points orso. I was too stupid back then to realize that I'd only have to re-download the torrent and it would seed, instead I just ignored it lol

A little off topic here but a quick question, if I may... (not gonna start a thread for it)
When do the numbers kick over from gb to tb? I've UL'd over a TB but it still only shows gigs. Its not an issue really, I was just curious.

Probably with 10 TB and up. I have 1700+ GB uploaded and it still shows as GB. Tatsujin has uploaded 12 TB and it shows as TB on his profile.

I sincerely don't know how it is so hard to seed here, you just have to leave the torrent client running... I only have 30 or so active torrents, I also need to limit my upload speed to 3.7MB/s because of hardware issues, and the speed is always near the limit. I think I'm gonna delete everything and redownload it, this way I can help some other people seed. It would be my good deed for this year :)
