Watch and be astonished. Then you should best finish Terra and then play with Aqua (b/c she gets to kick ass in the epilogue). And yeah, there is an explanation about where Vanitas came from:
(click to show/hide)Vanitas was born of the darkness in Ventus' heart when Xehanort took this part as Ventus was on the virge of death. The other half of Ventus' heart was then filled up by Sora. In the end, Vens heart returns to Sora and this is also why Ven looks like Roxas.
