--- Quote from: Sosseres on November 11, 2010, 12:55:57 PM ---The problem with all authenticators is that they assume the account is something of value. Total value of my account with games included is somewhere around $60. I do not want an authenticator for $60 services. If I did have a wow account it might be different since you actually can gain things of value with that. Having D2, WC3 +TFT and SC2 as an average account means you lose a small amount of money re-buying those things in a worst case scenario. You lose nothing of your play time or other value (unless you spent a lot of time on D2).
If they forced authentication I would never use their official services and would instead look for pirated solutions.
I see authenticators to anything worth less than $1000 as meaningless, worse than that, they take time. I wish all games had the option for auto-login.

My WoW account is worth in thousands, I have two Legendaries (shadowmourne being as one) and some extremely rare items, plus the time I put in, achievements, the guild I'm in and the large reputation I have on my server. I've been hacked twice and they happened to be in less than 48 hours. I made sure it won't happen a third time and I quickly ordered an Authenticator and re-registered my e-mail account to another one with a specific-only-password that I don't use for anything else and I never access that account under any circumstances. I have all the e-mails being sent to that account forwarded to my main one. It's pointless to get hacked at this stage. Cata's coming out and I'm getting prepared for it.

only stupid people get hacked so i feel authenticators for games shouldnt be required

You can have no addons at all and still get hacked easily without an authenticator (happened to a lot of people). I wouldn't say "only stupid people", I'd point my finger at those that go the "buy gold" websites and "we level characters for X price" and "Congrats we're giving away Beta codes just visit this website here!".
I got hacked because I updated an addon IceHUD from Matrix (whatever) and I learned my lesson. Apparently Matrix somehow doesn't have a restricted addon upload to the legit makers so almost anyone can upload the same addon with a "new version" and have a keylogger in the file(s). Dropped that Matrix program and started using curse.com since it's easier and restricted to legit addon makers.

yea you were stupid and used a non secure source for a mod. That would be a sound basis for calling someone stupid. Not to say you didnt hopefully learn a lesson, but still wowace and for the most part curse are the sites most people get their mods from deviating from those norms is risky and stupid.
Thus i feel my statement holds true since peoples accounts arent being targeted and brutefoced
--- End quote ---
Yea I was stupid for not noticing what Matrix really did and not having an authenticator off hand first. But would you level me with the same group of people that click on those websites or try to purchase gold or whatever? .... No. You wouldn't. I thought "Oh well I never got hacked, won't happen to me" This is why you NEED an authenticator. Otherwise, don't be a little bitch when you get hacked "But but but" Where was your authenticator? ... Blizzard already has three different options, two of them which are free and the other one you pay for a real one they make and they send it to you. You need one if you care about your account.
WoW is the #1 game besides being an MMO, of course you're going to get targeted just like everyone else whether you use addons, visit websites or not.

no i wouldnt put you on the same level as the retard who gives his account information to "gold sellers"
because you can buy gold completely legit and not worry about your account being "hacked"
Plain and simple its like asking if the functional retard is as stupid as the retard who cant feed itself or wipe itself when it shits.
Obviously not but because hes functionally retarded does that mean hes not retarded? NO.
Same concept but think of yourself as functionally retarded.

There are bad gold sites out there with key loggers. I don't know how it works but it happened before.
No matter how poor I used to be, I never went to those sites. Oh, I remember those days of being poor ... but now ... it's different. :)

fucked up thing is ive bought gold once for my epic flying on my main toon. I was broke cuz i gave my account to a friend for like a year when i quit and was 70 when i came back and needed flying.
After i had epic flying i more then tripled the amount of gold i bought and had 10kg sitting on my toon when i quit again when sunwell came out. That 10kg sponsored my alts in wotlk.
I quit wow again like 3 months ago. Ill prolly not touch it again since diablo 3 should be out within another year or so. So i currently have 2 good geared chars (havent played them in a bit) but they are just sitting there wasting both ICC geared in multiple specs lol Warrior tank/dps(not the greatest dps but definately not bad)
And DK dps/dps/tank(i have a few dps sets and pretty solid tank gear)
ive been playing since a lil before aq40 came out on and off in roughly 1 year increments. give or take like 2 or 3 months.
And a shaman that ive leveled like 5 times since they came out with shamans for alliance the guy who i let play my account leveled it to like 63 before i came back to wow and i just hate mana so much lol.

Knock on wood, I've not been hacked yet either, though I've been around since open beta. This is despite the fact that I think two factor authentication (e.g. Authenticator) is simply a pain, I carry enough stuff in my pockets. I don't even have two factor on my bank account...
I'm glad someone has admitted to buying WoW gold... This still has to be stopped to reduce the hacking. I'm somewhat paranoid now as my account has enough gold attained by quests/drops/auction house to fund 30 epic fliers now(my 8 80s have epic flying already, too)... And thus would be a jackpot for a hacker looking for quick gold to sell to a gold buyer, dirty or not... (Blizzard made getting gold almost too easy IMHO yet people still buy??? I suppose just impatience...)
My bnet id is unique, and I run WoW in a slightly 1-off operating system (the 'unsupported' WoW OS), don't do questionable stuff on my WoW machine, and monitor suspicious activity carefully... Hope this is enough to not need two factor and still ward off hackers...

yea its really not hard to not get hacked. Only use long time trusted sites like wowace and curse for your mods and be careful even on curse because occasionally a trojan slips in.
I have a 10 digit password so yea its kinda long it used to be longer.
Use noscript or something similar with your browser then it dont matter if you click trojan downloading links from your email shit wont happen.
Like i said you really have to be fucking stupid to get "hacked", there is only a few ways for it to happen. Things like authenticators can now be bypassed quite easily (amazing the people who steal your shit created innovations) depending on how you fucked up.
Realistically avoiding getting your account hacked is about as easy as not getting viruses on your comp. Dont be stupid and it generally wont happen.
and @ boxer, people dont get targeted like i said. They just prey on the stupid so if you fall for your traps you almost deserved it.
