Dail-in Battle.net New Security Feature (free and optional)

I probably have, but I can't remember if I shared this already on Bakabt or not.  My Battlenet account got hacked for the first time a few months ago.  Funny thing is, my account has been inactive since December 2008, but it got reactivated for 1 month with a stolen credit card number.  The account only got hacked after I merged my WoW account with a new Battlenet account.  I don't have an authenticator.

My current PC is and has always been virus-free.  WoW has never even been installed on my current PC (this PC will be 2 years old in January), so obviously I didn't download & install any questionable addons.  After creating my Battlenet account, I've only accessed it from my current machine.  I've never shared my account information (logon or password) with anyone, yet I've intermittently received WoW phishing emails for the last year at the email address associated with the account.  At one point, my WoW/Battlenet logon/password was the same as my logon/pw on one other site (Thoughthammer), but that's been changed.  (Now my Bnet password is unique.)

So, except for mistakenly having my logon/pw for Battlenet repeated on another site, I literally have done nothing wrong security-wise, and yet still got hacked.  If Thoughthammer had a security breach, then that would explain how my account info got compromised.

The lesson, kiddies, if you're not going to have an authenticator, is to make sure your Bnet password is 100% unique.  I’m not convinced that authenticators are necessary, and I think Blizz could take other steps to tighten up security – for example, many financial websites, if they don’t recognize the PC you are logging in from, will challenge you to respond to one of several security questions (your mother’s maiden name, the color of your first car, or whatever questions you have pre-selected when you set up your account).  This is a relatively simple thing that adds one more layer of security to accounts.
