Hm, the best english dub that I've heard was Azumanga Diaoh (Osaka had an awesome English seiuu/voice actress), and the worst was the Starblazer series (though Voyger's subs were not much better ;).

I'll agree with everyone else about Cowboy Bebop, and Serial Experiments Lain was pretty good too. What do you think?

french one for CCS.

english dubs are just too horrible for me, and its not because im french canadian, the dubbers for CCS put some extra effort as they translated all the opening themes and ending themes except one and made them sound very good, almost as good as the japanese ones.

The two that come to mind off the bat are Last Exile and GiTS.

Some of the other series that were mentioned, like Trigun, Outlaw Star, and FMA, come in fairly high on my list, but I really didn't find them particularly enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, they were pretty darn good, and I would certainly watch them. But the voices just sounded too wooden, or too mismatched at times and so they didn't keep me "in" the show like the original dubbing did. If it ever sounds like someone is reading a line from a script, it really takes away from the scene.

I won't say that never happens with the original dubbings, because it does. Every dubbing has it's problems whether it's in English or Japanese. I just don't think it happens quite as often in the originals.

Case in point: S-Cry-Ed. Even in Japanese some of those lines were hard to swallow. But in the English dubbing, practically everything was just painful to listen to. Like in all those scenes where they were supposed to be yelling with anger, it just came off like a bored guy yelling at a mic. That just isn't fun to listen to.

Quite true. I almost forgot about that series. It was a sort of a simple show but I always loved watching it week after week.

It was good besides the ending....but that's always the case isn't it. As for the dub, Yusuke's voice fit perfectly.

As good or perhaps better than the Japanese: Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Fruits Basket, Texhnolyze, Haibane Renmei, Last Exile, Super Gals!, Sherlock Hound, Last Exile, FMP, Wolf's Rain, ROD TV, Kino's Journey

In the decent/watchable category: Scrapped Princess, Berserk, FMA, Outlaw Star, Madlax, Ghost Stories, Negima, Koi Kaze, Angelic Layer, Diamond Daydreams, NieA_7, Boys Be, Gunslinger Girl, Figure 17, Rune Soldier, Girls Bravo, Ultra Maniac

Avoid: Love Hina, Crest of the Stars, Now and Then, Here and There, Snow Fairy Sugar, Utena, Sailor Moon S & SuperS (I didn't mind the first 2 seasons, but maybe that was nostalgia), Maze, Ceres, Fushigi Yuugi, Escaflowne

(Sorry, I spend too much time at ANN and it's nice to sit back and list stuff from time to time  8) )

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

I Ussually perfer to stay with subs lol as they are less likly to be filtered.

Altho some like cowboy bebop seem to be just as good both dubed and subed.

Cowboy bebop gets my vote

I rarely listen to dubs so my experience is pretty limited.  However the other day I watched Scrapped Princess and early on compared the dub to the fansub.  The English text of the dub was far superior to the sub text.  It was more literate and had much more nuance.  Of course, since I don't speak Japanese I don't know whether the dub was an accurate representation or not.  Still it made me think that offering subtitles that use the dub text might be an interesting approach.

I'm sure a million people have said this already but Bebop is amazing.  Champloo is really good too.  I recommend both.  Eva doesn't have a bad dub, it is just no one likes the voices.  Also, almost any full length anime motion picture like Ghost in a Shell or Spirited Away have great voice acting.

I prefer subs because I'm just so used to fansubs now, either that or I just don't expect a dubbed version. Thanks to OGM and MKV files I watch a lot moree dubs.

Best dub I've ever heard was probably Ah! My Goddess, I just finished watching it again a few nights ago, and both voices for Belldandy were very similar.

This works if the English dub is good, but otherwise, some people might just complain that the studios are being lazy and are "dub-titling."

I have got to say one of my faves are the dubs of Rurouni Kenshin, believe it or not.  Of course, I have got to include Ranma.  That was one of the early dubs in the 80's/90's and even with the replacement Ranma VO Actor, they still did a great job.  I also liked the DBZ dubn...the first one with pioneer even though they edited a lot and Funimation did eventually redeem themselves, I think.

Gokusen, Samurai Deeper Kyo, FMA and Scryed had good dubs.

Gokusen had all the voices fitting pretty well.
Samurai Deeper Kyo had Kyo in a more violent mood in the dub and same goes with Kazuma in Scryed.
FMA sub was unbearable, Edward sounded like a little girl and I thought he was because of the long hair.

FLCL was a great in sub and dub! Great anime.

Naruto has a horrible dub. He keeps saying "I'm going to be Hokage. Believe it." He said "Believe it", four times in one episode and twice during the commercials.

There isn't really a best, but the most tolerable for me were FMA, Cowboy Bebop, and Hellsing. I don't totally hate dubs, but the thing that irks me is how horribly the english VA's pronounce Japanese words/names(same could go for Japanese pronouncing english words/names, but it's tolerable) and the amount of cheesiness emotional scenes have in dubbed series because of the voices.
