Here is my try, I know there isn't exactly the amount of space requested either side but...

The Tanukis from Ghibli's Pom Poko

Any suggestions welcome :D

Here is version 2 with text size and positioning changed and the totoro cropping cleaned

And what it would look like on the website:

Lol yeah, I couldn't think of a work-around coz I'm using a 'panoramic scene' image (from the 2000 Ghibli calendar) rather than cropped characters or vector images. It was a choice between black on the sides or black in the middle:

This looks worse I think... too much space under that roof :-\

Btw I was looking to do a Ghibli banner as there doesn't seem to be a single one on BakaBT

Ps Just in case the mods like it ;D:

hmmm, this layout looks a little better, but it won't work too well because of the site buttons on the right. the left side is probably ok...

TBH if you are going to do a scene banner like this, I think you should try and make it more like Isil's and V1gg3n's spice and wolf banners or Isil's mushishi banner or the Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan banner that carmesim175 did on the main banner page. That is what i would suggest doing - put the image on a white bg, orient the whole picture to the left and then use a fade or blend on the right edge. then put all the text to the right.

Or if you really want the text in the center then I'd still go with the white bg, make the text a little smaller, move both images in a bit and and fade the edges like in the banners I mentioned, so they blend in smoothly, and don't look all blocky, like the one one the black bg does now...you could basically use the one you have here, and just move things in and blend the outer edges into the white bg to get rid of all the space under the roof.

also I'd leave the BakaBT text the normal colors and sizes, Or if you want to use red, then you might change the "anime community" to the same red as the "happy holidays" and leave the "bakabt" white...I guess you could use three colors and keep the gold, but I wouldn't advise using colored shadows on the letters...

well, there it is...I'm hardly an expert but that is what I'd do.. ^_^

Thanks for the feedback :D.
The three banners that you mention IMO are not really comparable to my attempt because while the background is indeed a scene the focus is clearly on a zoomed in character, the closest I can find is zzizzy's Tokyo Godfathers banner as the scene covers the entire background and the three characters are not as zoomed in but they still aren't interacting with the scene like mine.

As for fades and blends I'm using MS Paint and Office Picture Manager :'( ......

Anyway I did some tedious hocus-pocus and 'extended' the edges...

V3.2:

I'll have a go at modifying the text as you suggested, I'm having trouble with the pixelation of 'k' and 'T'...

I like both of your banners atm, but I would like to ask, if you can make Rika's hair a little darker, to show that the fireworks are in the background, it's really nice, just wondering if you could pull that off, I think it could make it better :)
but really good otherwise :)

Thanks for the feedback. (:

How about this?

@ghiblike: Try to use Gimp. It's an open source program (free) and it's pretty powerful. It supports layers and stuff... But for some things Paint is still the best  ;D

If he can make something that good with paint makes me wonder what he's capable of making with GIMP/Photoshop.
btw, another good freeware is Paint.NET, but as it's name suggests it requires NET framework.
recently ... what doesn't ?

:o :P I think I'm being given more credit than I deserve- most of the image is, as I mentioned earlier, from the 2000 Ghibli calendar(neo1024's torrent) and I only 'painted' the bits on the sides rather than leave them black.

Anyway, I did a Google search right after I posted my comment and found many open source image editors and spend literally the whole of Sunday playing around with GIMP and Inkscape. Inkscape proved too complicated for me but GIMP is good although in the end I did most of the editing on the Cloud based editor pixlr

This is probably my final draft, for better or worse, as I've spend more time on this than I expected... having said that it is strangely addictive and I think I may have OCD ;D

Fighting off the sleep, can someone tell me if the background looks all right?

Also keep moving the text, can't seem to find a nice way to put it without looking to cluttered/squashed together. Maybe should just get rid of happy holidays.  :-\
