Little problem caused by Bittorrent....
(1/1)
Micharus:
For a while now I've been having a problem that only seems to appear when Bittorrent is downloading.
What happens is that the computer will freeze, lock solid, needing a full reset to come up again.
Things I have checked: Video card, memory. Re-seated both items, checked that I have the latest drivers for the video card.
Scanned and re-scanned and re-scanned with ZA anti-virus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and DRWeb Cureit.
Also used CCCleaner to sort other potential problems.
Then I spent some money on a couple of fans to increase cooling, so it's not an overheating problem.
It's not a power problem either, the computer case (Cooler Master Centurion5 II) comes with a 500 watt power supply, so there is plenty of power.
I *think* I managed to figure out what is causing the problem.
For some odd reason the tcp/ip stack is being overloaded by too many connections and causing the computer to freeze.
What caused it is most likely an 'optimizer' program I ran, which also (unknown to me) optimized my 'Net connection.
I have since 'reset' my tcp/ip, by using a 'Netshell' command I found on the Microsoft site ---> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
So far my PC hasn't crashed for two days while BT has been uploading, the acid test is tonight, when I'm going to be downloading for the first time since I 'reset' my tcp/ip.
Hopefully everything will go well.
*note: I *know* this doesn't read well, it's been an odd kind of day. I'll 'clean' this post up and explain things in a more understandable way after I've had some sleep.
Blanchimont:
It could be your firewall too.
I know F-Secure I have caused some major stalling/hang after I upgraded it to the newest version. The added features in latest F-Secure version seemed incompatible with running torrents, so had do opt-out those. Probably something to do with the tcp/ip stack as you mentioned...
Micharus:
ARG.
Icecube city yet again.
Will have to do more research on the tcp/ip thing.
I'm thinking I'm at fault this time again...... got over confident when I left it running overnight for a couple of nights just uploading and it didn't freeze, so I fiddled with the MTU and RWIN settings.
Looks like I need to reset everything using netshell again.
Currently running Bittorrent 6.3, but I plan on moving over to uTorrent 2.2, just as soon as I figure out how to move all of the torrent info without having to do them one by one. *goes to check wiki
edit: SO FLAMING ANNOYED!
Setup uTorrent 2.2, read and followed the instructions to move the torrents over and...... it wanted to RE-DOWNLOAD 90% of them!
At that point, I thought "meh too hard" and went back to the old bittorrent client...... which wouldn't recognize anything.
After trying several things, I've thrown my hands up in despair and put it all in the 'too hard basket', after all I don't really need to keep the torrent's that I have finished d/ling right?
So, re-installed uTorrent 2.2 and it's basically a clean start.
Maybe this is a good thing.
Southrop:
I don't see why uTorrent would want you to redownload 90% of everything. Are you sure you actually directed it to the folder where you've put the stuff and then clicked Force Recheck?

Yep, I'm sure, I'm pretty good at following instructions. I also have ONE folder where all of the torrents are and it's named so it's not easy to make a mistake.
Doesn't matter now anyway, I had a *lot* of torrents, a number of which don't exist on Baka anymore, due to the copyright thing.
I'm sure a lot of them have also been "updated" with better versions, but I'm happy with what I have.
Good thing is, uTorrent 2.2 seems to be behaving itself and not causing any dramas so far.
