anyone have a USB stick thats WORKS with the 360?
« on: November 16, 2010, 09:29:10 AM »
blea. I've tried 2 different USB sticks with the stupid 360. A centon datastick pro 16gb, and a Kingston 8gb data traveler (g3 series, model DTIG3/8gbz) The centon gave me an error saying it didn't meet requirements but i tried using it anyway. It wound up losing some data on it, and lost my friends profile when he was transfering it once. I then got the kingston and got the same damn error message. This was after seeing people mentino the data traveler worked on other forums.

I'm getting tired of this. I dont get why MS has to make crap so friggin difficult and idiotic. The PS3 just uses any friggin flash drive with no problems whatsoever. The 360 requires you to friggin format the dumb thing, which makes it useless for anything else, and on top of that it seems almost nothing works for it. Such an absurd pain in the ass. Well, the bottom line is i need a stick to use and im tired of wasting money on stuff that doesn't work

Have any of you gotten a particular stick to work with the Xbox? im looking for an 8gb size probably, but i guess i could get a 16 if i have to. I need SPECIFIC model numbers. I.e. Kingston data travelers have tons of different lines and models. I hear some PNY drives work great, and others dont, but have not seen specifics. This little video here shows a pny 16gig working great.. but of course they dont mention the type or model number

mine works, but it's an old (out of production) 1gb stick,
http://www.pny.com/products/flash/attache.asp (the purple one)

If I had to guess, the new attaché would just like my one. So in theory it'd work with your 360

There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else.

People have problems with this?  I'm using a $20 no name drive and it's worked perfectly since i've configured it.  Try reformatting the drive.

I've honestly never had issues either. Do you have some odd protection software on it or something?

Also, allocate slightly less than the drive's size, maybe by 100mb,  becauase maybe it's trying to fill non-existent space.

Didn't Microsoft make it so you had to use a proprietary stick?

Connect your xbox to xbox live, I'm really sure updating a patch/firmware will make it work. Because you need the new Spring 2010 update for it to work.

Also are you using this for music/movies/anime in that case. It has to be formatted Fat32, which is universal it works with everything.
So make sure that its not NTFS.

If your trying to use for memory and what not, Sandisk makes a flashdrive specifically for the Xbox 360.

No.  Surprisingly, you can use any USB, even an external HDD!

updating does nothing. Im not the only one with issues here, check any xbox forum. Microsoft sucks, they want you to buy their overpriced junk. I honestly dont get why they dont just let you use any USB stick like the PS3 does. No formating to microsofts made up file format required.

Of course i've tried reformatting it, no dice. The dumb xbox reformats it into its goofy FatEX or whatever its called format anyway when you set it up.

anyway i still dont have any actual model numbers. An old 1gb out of print stick doesn't really help, and saying a 'no name' 20 dollar stick gives me no info. What size? where did you get it? Im sure theres some brand on it. Anyone who has actually had their usb stick work WITHOUT the 'does not meet performance recomendation' message, please let me know the exact name, model number and size of the drive. im sick of getting those that dont work. this will be just for the 360. I have plenty of regular usb sticks now for other stuff

It sounds like FLywave's sugestino of a PNY might work. Maybe the speed is the issue for the error message, but it seems PNY doesn't publish its read/write speeds. The kingston is rather slow looking at the site now (10/5)

Really? My old 2GB Kingston worked fine. So did my 4GB Pny one. I've never had issues other than with shitty unknown named brands.

Well every single USB, even external hard drive works with me so as long as its Fat32 formatted. Even unknown shitty dollar-store brand USBs work on mine. What model is your xbox 360?

@foh foh.. again, thats not the info neded. Kingston has a ton of diffeernt drives. WHat type of kingston drive? 101? 111? G3? G2? model number?, same question for the PNY, attatche? what?

@tomoya-kun Ive heard a lot of the ones that come with games seem to work fine. My friends using his forza motorsport one and that works too

@1212 by works do you mean it actually passes the performance test? Im aware that just about anything will 'work' But the ones i men tied that i tried gave me the performance warning, and in the case of the centon i actually lost data with it. I have tried this on my OLD original model non HDMI 360, and on the newer 120gb elite i got right before the slims came out. Care to elaborate on what 'every single USB' means? I.e. do you have an 8gb or 16gb model that specifically worked?

I actually emailed kingston and PNY but they cant confirm that their stuff will work. I send a follow up email to PNY to ask what their data speeds were

I believe the 2GB one was the "classic" datatraveler. The PNY one is a 4GB mini attache. This was like 2 years ago. So idk if some update changed anything.

*facepalm* I dont know how often I have to repeat myself. Just saying 'a sandisk' or a 'kingston' doesn't help at all. Thats the problem with most forums where i see topics like these. There are a lot of different sandisk and kingston models, you need to be specific

@fohfoh. from what i can gather the people who said their kingstons work were probably using the old datatraveler.. 100 line i think (g2) So that fits in line with your guess. Tnx for the info

@logos mini attatche eh? i was thinking of the regular one instead. Im not sure. You say its slow but did it pass the performance test when you configured it, or give you a performance test fail message? It sounds like a PNY may be my best bet but i gotta lock down what type

I don't know what you mean by performance test, also I've never 'configured' it, I just plug shit in and it works, also by slow I mean when I select my usb to listen to the music it just takes longer than I'd expect for it to read, movies/not very much music is fine, but I do have like 2 gb of music on the thing...

When I say classic data traveler, it's the one with the metal piece on the side and not the ones that are pure plastic nowadays. (Number series, G3 or whatever). I haven't been able to locate any differentiating number/name for it.
G2 is a possible guess.

I do have a 16GB "G2" at home I need to wipe anyways. (Turned it into an USB "CD" installer for ubuntu). I probably could test it out sometime this weekend when I get the chance.

I've never really been impressed by the performance of the mini attache even on a computer.

But I concur. I usually just plug and play.

ah i missed the part of you playing music and movies only. Im refering to using it to actually save games and stuff on the 360. That requires a special format on the 360 for their stupid proprietary file system thing. So you were just using it like a regular usb stick which wasn't what i needed, my bad i misunderstood your post.

@fohfoh you mean yours looks like the 100/g2 line at the top here right:
http://www.kingston.com/flash/dt_chart.asp

ya since you gotta reformat it i would be much obliged if you could give it a quick test on the 360 first and let me know if it passes performance tests
