I haven't been around this forum for ages :3

Interesting topic. I wear glasses since I was.... 4-5 years old. Myopia (both eyes) and a little astigmatism (on one eye). The myopia has gotten worse and worse during all my life until recent years, I've had the same glasses graduation for 2.5 years now, so it seems it has stopped growing. It's already bad enough... I'm almost blind without glasses and not wearing them makes me feel dizzy :(. Currently my glasses are -9.50 for the myopia and -0.50 astigmatism for left eye.

I tried contacts when I was around 8 (actually my parents made me try xD), but it was too bothersome. From putting them on, to taking care of not falling asleep, going to water, storing them with specific liquids, etc. They also bothered my eyes when I had them for long periods of time. Used them (or tried to) for a few months and returned to glasses. Even now I'm comfy with glasses and don't feel like using contacts any time soon.

I don't know much about surgery (in my crappy country, that is). Some say it's very expensive, others not *so* expensive (health system doesn't even cover my glasses). I also don't know how safe it is (that's what worries me the most) and... how the actual process is (saw a video once, seems painful :P). So far I'll continue with glasses.

All in all... I got new glasses 2 weeks ago. "Photocromatic", or the ones that get dark in the sun and clear in the shade ;D. So far so good, they work great, fast and really get dark outside. They cost a fuckload of money though, $1200 including the frame (remember this is a crappy country, that's around 300 USD). Glass brand is "Transitions" (anyone tried these?). I asked in a few places and those came as the better (and most expensive <.<). At least they work as advertised 8)

I got glasses that are always dark and ones that are always clear. This is because I found out that the "always dark" glasses are a bit darker than the "photochromatic" ones and I do not like bright light.

Because laser surgery isn't safe, permanent or cheap?

Say what?!
its not safe - you can end up worse then you thought or in the occasional case blind or MUCH worse then you started. Thus it isnt safe yet.

Its not permanent, in many cases years after receiving the surgery you need to get it done again or your vision ends up deteriorating again again the effects of this vary from person to person and how long it lasts varies also.

Its not cheap - considering if you have half decent vision insurance you can get your glasses for like nothing once a year  or 50 bucks once a year, vs spending 2-5k on lasik surgery which might last 10 years you tell me which is cheaper.

Not to mention the futility of the operation if ones vision hasn't stabilized.  I'm 27 and continue to need a stronger prescription each year, so no legitimate surgeon would perform the surgery even if I wanted it.

I wear glasses as I'm really short-sighted (read: really damn blind without my glasses) due to all the reading I used to do as a kid.  I have astigmatism in both eyes.

I wear glasses. About -5 diopters in both eyes (nearsighted) so pretty blind. I once tried to get contacts in my eyes but I just couldn't do it. I would be wearing contacts if I could get them into my eyes.

Poll results are scary, 2/3 of the participants have bad eyesight? I bet most of them are not pensionists either.

At least this tendency should stop harrassing at school as kids with glasses will be a majority  ;)

What mgz said.

@Sdedalus:
Do you have negative lenses? Using negative lenses deteriorates ones vision the more you use them. It's a shitty deal. Either you use negative lenses and see something but your vision deteriorates all the time, you don't use anything and don't see anything or you use plus lenses have even worse vision but it might get better if you're lucky. I've got a friend who has had glasses for ages and he's been cursing because of that. If he had been given plus lenses as a kid he might not actually need glasses right now. Instead he's blind as a bat without them.

Because we can!

I still remember the time i started wearing classes.
It was around the time I was in group 5~7 (Netherland's form of grades) when i was around 9 years or something.
teacher told me to give the answer on 25+XX which was written on the chalkboard. I thought I got it correctly.
However somehow there wasn't written 25 but 125 lol.....
Knew I needed glasses at that time lol.
Btw.. can someone find the (wiki) page which tells which grade your in at which age?
I tried searching for  'Education England' and 'grades england' but couldn't re-find it anymore. Cuz we use a other methode here in Netherland

EDIT: found it lol

Having contacts for the 2nd week now, I must say that it's just awesome to have them.
It's true that I have to wake up 10-15mins earlier to put them in (I fail from times to times), but it's worth it.
I'm only afraid to fall asleep with them xd

Got 2 new pairs of glasses on the way. Annoyingly 90% of the glasses on the market right now don't suit me. I can only wear full frames if they're a lighter colour like pink or purple, black ones look horrible. Which leaves me with the few choices of frames with the bottoms missing (no idea what their names are)

Glasses.  No way am I gonna be sticking foreign objects up against my eyeballs.  Contact lense are a vast international conspiracy to mind control the population.  The contact lenses have subliminal visual images in them.

For most people, vision problems are related to minimum and maximum focus distance.  Myopia requires a negative diopter correction through the use of a concave lens.  Hyperopia requires a positive diopter correction through the use of a convex lens.  Both of these are developmental issues caused by the distance between the cornea and retina being too long or too short for a full range of focus.

Due to the demands of daily life and the way optics work, myopia has a much more profound effect on functional vision, so it's far more likely to be treated with corrective lenses and it's much easier to acceptably correct.

Since a person with even moderately severe hyperopia can still focus clearly on anything beyond a couple of feet, reading glasses are usually all that will ever be necessary(and when you consider how little most people read, it's probably safe to say that the majority of hyperopics will never need any corrective lenses to live normally).  For someone with moderately severe myopia, like myself, a couple of feet is the furthest one can clearly focus and corrective lenses are needed for everything.

So even if the myth about negative lenses causing ocular deterioration were true, I'd still gladly subject myself to it in order to live a normal life.

That's pretty much the deal. Not a shit you can do about it now. But for people who got the lenses as kids, using positive lenses might have repaired their vision given a few years.

Oh yeah, I also have a friend who got glasses in sixth form. He got positive lenses for his myopia. He doesn't need glasses anymore.
So either he was just weird or it's not a complete myth. Can't say, don't know statistics.

I've got myopia and negative lenses myself but I doubt I'd get any help from positive ones being over 20 and having astigmatism.

Because we can!
