I haven't been around this forum for ages :3
Interesting topic. I wear glasses since I was.... 4-5 years old. Myopia (both eyes) and a little astigmatism (on one eye). The myopia has gotten worse and worse during all my life until recent years, I've had the same glasses graduation for 2.5 years now, so it seems it has stopped growing. It's already bad enough... I'm almost blind without glasses and not wearing them makes me feel dizzy

. Currently my glasses are -9.50 for the myopia and -0.50 astigmatism for left eye.
I tried contacts when I was around 8 (actually my parents made me try xD), but it was too bothersome. From putting them on, to taking care of not falling asleep, going to water, storing them with specific liquids, etc. They also bothered my eyes when I had them for long periods of time. Used them (or tried to) for a few months and returned to glasses. Even now I'm comfy with glasses and don't feel like using contacts any time soon.
I don't know much about surgery (in my crappy country, that is). Some say it's very expensive, others not *so* expensive (health system doesn't even cover my glasses). I also don't know how safe it is (that's what worries me the most) and... how the actual process is (saw a video once, seems painful

). So far I'll continue with glasses.
All in all... I got new glasses 2 weeks ago. "Photocromatic", or the ones that get dark in the sun and clear in the shade

. So far so good, they work great, fast and really get dark outside. They cost a fuckload of money though, $1200 including the frame (remember this is a crappy country, that's around 300 USD). Glass brand is "Transitions" (anyone tried these?). I asked in a few places and those came as the better (and most expensive <.<). At least they work as advertised
