Whatever you do don't get a wide gamut monitor.  sRGB or GTFO. Speaking from experience here.

What happened?

Wide gamut means a purer white backlight, it "exaggerates" colors, for 8-bit panels it also means larger delta between colors. When you profile your monitor with meters, it gets toned down to normal level but you have less "steps". e.g. 0-230 instead of 0-255 because the color is too intense.
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.
