DS screen protectors?
« on: December 02, 2010, 06:57:14 AM »
so i got a DS lite. They were 89 bucks at target and i figure at that price its worth getting one to test it out and i can just throw an XL on my amazon wish list =P that way i have backwards compatibility fo the GBA games i may want to get, and i have a smaller one my niece can play with. This brings me to a question though. Since there will be a 4 year old using it from time to time, im thinking i may want to put a screen protector on this thing. I did some searching online and i guess the official nintendo ones SUCK. I see a lot of people complaining about most of them. I went to all the local game stores and found 3 brands with the 'official' seal of nintendo on them

these are the manufacturers i found that were official:
BD&A ( i think this is the one i heard most people complainigna bout online)
Power A
PDP
Hori (online, i didn't see any in the brick and motor stores)

Kind of strange there is such a wide variety. It makes me concerned that some of the earlier ones were junk or something. Does anyone have any experience with these? which one should i get? Which are the best? I hear some actually use glue or something on them o_O which is a terrible idea. Unfortunately none of the packaging specifies what they use. I think Hori is the best from what i've read but i also saw several bad reviews on amazon for them. With complaints ranging from they hurt sensitivity, to they dont cover the screen all the way, or even one about it having a blue tint o_O

Im wondering if Hori USA and hori Japan are 2 different products? if i go for hori are the Japanese ones better?

I was just hoping someone may have tried some of these out, or could steer me in the right direction. This is for the DS lite btw, not the DS I

I've got some Gamestop brand packaged Invisi-Shield, they're made by PDP if I understood correctly. I'm quite happy with them, enough at least to not feel any need to try other brands. They're thick enough to protect properly and I haven't experienced any loss in sensitivity. I don't play that many action packed games though so you might want a second opinion on that (Henry Hatsworth can get pretty hectic though ;D ). These don't cover the screen totally but you need that small gap if you want to be able to change the protector in the future. These ones leave a little under 1 mm on both horizontal and vertical sides which is a bit unnecessary, one side would have been enough. Neither gap is large enough that they disturb the slide of the stylus though as the tip is 2 mm thick. I bought these at July and so far I haven't yet got any major scratches.

But as I haven't tried any other brand it just might be that I don't know what a true Good is so take these praises with grain of salt ;)

It really doesn't matter what you get. The point of the screen protector is to be a sacrificial lamb. You put in scratches anyways, so have the protector take damage rather than the actual thing.

You can literally buy screen protectors for the PSP and DSLite in Japanese dollar stores.(100 yen stores).

err yes foh foh it does matter. if you read the post you'd see that some reviews id read said that several of these brands use glue. Im not putting glue on the DS screen. it also matters if it hurts sensitivity or anything, and if its really weak and gets scratched quickly and easily. A good screen protector is very different from a junk one.  You can buy cheap junk component cables, or controllers  too, doesn't mean they're any good.

I dont need one for the psp, just the ds lite since a 4 year old will be using it

@loen. I just noticed that gamestop had the gamestop brand i didn't look into it too much. But i think they rebrand their stuff so i guess it coul be PDP. Question about it since you didnt specify: Does it use glue to ahdere to the screen or just static charge? Im definatly looking for the later in case i need to switch it out

Im also still wondering abut the Hori ones. I keep hearing they're awesome but i saw some iffy reviews on Amazon. Makes me wonder if the US and JP ones are different.

What I am saying, is that the brand doesn't matter. More expensive is useless too. You merely need a cheap screen protector to take on damage. Application being a bigger issue.

I know shit all about the brands you are talking about. I merely know that I use ones that are pretty much the cheapest of the cheap from Asia. Multiple years of using them, they're perfectly fine. There's really no quality brands, merely brands you stay away from (which you already know of). Grab whatever is cheapest. Read reviews if you want. But there seriously is no extra value added in choosing a specific brand. Invisishield is a bigger waste of money.

"Not using glue" is silly. Static charges are TRULY the shitty ones.
It's a sticker, what the fuck else is it supposed to use? You want to rely on static on an electronic? True, while "glue" isn't the right thing, the thing will still be sticky.

Seriously though... I don't think you really understand much about screen protectors in the first place, so here you go.

I use invisishield on my iphone. It's good. Just don't fuck up putting it on.

tnx for linking a thread i had already read when i was searching around foh =P all that particular thread wound up telling me back then was that target may carry hori,w hich lead to my question about the US hori guards VS JP ones. The fact that you seem to think putting glue (some brands actually use a type of glue, not just a very light tacky coat) onto your DS screen is just fine and dandy, and you think a cheap 99 cent store variety would be as good as high grade resistant plastic shows that i dont really need to hear any more of your 'opinions' tnx anyway

@chiyachan hmm the only invisishield thing i see searching amazon for the DS is by PDP, wheras the one for iphones seems to be made by ZAGG.. so i dont think thats the same thing. Do they use adhesive?

Ah i browsed Zagg's site and found this
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/nintendo-ds-lite-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php

kinda pricy. I  think a lot of people use these on their iphones, and in that regard i've heard good things about them. I'm not sure if it would be the best thing for the DS though. Most of the reviews and info im finding for it is for a whole DS sleeve, i just want to cover the touch screen

I wound up just ordering the JP hori ones from playasia for now. I also picked up a PDP one from target and will take a look at that and see how it looks and if i want to use that or wait for the hori ones. That invisishield one looks pretty nice though

I had to actually lift the protector to check that since I couldn't remember... The surface of it is slightly sticky but there are no globs of glue or anything and there's no residue left on the screen after removing the protector if that's what you're concerned about.
