"Sky Girls"

Take one part 'Evangelion' (plug suits), one part 'Gundam' (mechs) add two parts 'Strike Witches' (young girls, aliens) and stir until mixed.

This will give you 'Sky Girls'.

In all seriousness, the only thing this series doesn't have is girls wearing animal ears, although the matched head pieces could serve and the umbilical cable that attaches to the 'flight suits' could easily be seen as a tail.

Cat girls anyone?

Set in the distant future, a future where mankind has been forced to use weapons of mass destruction in order to beat an alien known as 'WORMS', this the story is about a group of girls, initially 3 of them, who are chosen to become 'test pilots' for a new type of aircraft, the 'Sonic Diver'.

Our heroines have need to wear special 'flight suits', that involve a extra protective layer called 'nano skin', which is sprayed on in a special booth and then 'activated' with a charge of electricity.
This 'nano skin' basically helps the girls 'communicate' with their 'Sonic Diver' and enables them to control it properly, without the nano skin, they can't fly at all.
The 'nano skin' has one problem..... it has a 'life time' of roughly 24 minutes. After that it becomes unstable and dissolves/disappears.

Oddly, this feature is only used ONCE in the whole anime, I was expecting there to be a number of episodes where the time limit was used to increase the 'drama', but it didn't happen.

It also appears that the 'Sonic Diver' craft are more than transforming aircraft, with several episodes showing them 'walking' and responding to voice commands from their pilots.

As the anime progresses, we find that everything is not as it seems.
It appears the WORMS have returned and our heroines are pressed into service to fight them, much to the displeasure of Togo, the girls commander.

The girls (Eika, Otoha and Karen) are also against this turn of events, believing that they are only there to fly the 'Sonic Divers' as part of aerobatic flying team.

However, their outlook changes rapidly on discovering that while the latest combat aircraft, the 'Vic Viper' is quite capable of damaging the WORMS, only the 'Sonic Diver' can actually destroy them by using a technique called 'Delta Lock'.

Our heroines are forced into a training schedule that will allow them to perfect this technique and the anime shows their training and the troubles they have.

Eventually, we meet the next member of the team, Elise, a very young European (German?) girl, who is sent away, just in time to avoid being killed in a WORMS attack, but not fast enough for her to not see everything and everyone she loves die in that attack.

This leads to Elise having a burning desire for revenge against the WORMS, which leads to complications in later episodes.

With Elise finally on the team, the 'Delta Lock' technique becomes the 'Quadra Lock'.

Eventually, by a relatively winding road, with plots, sub-plots and back stories, additional characters being added along the way, we end up at the 'Final Battle'.... and I'll leave it there so you can find out how that goes.

As the anime moves along, there are 'slice of life' things happening, stuff that wouldn't be out of place in a show like K-On! or similar.
A trip to town helps the girls get to know each other a little better and introduces a new character to the mix, as well as providing some background information about one of the girls.
Episode 8 is the seemingly obligatory 'hot springs' trip, which actually fits in rather well after episode 7. There are a few laughs, but little else really happens.

The anime as a whole is rather good to watch, after a few episodes the rather skimpy 'flight suits' seem to become part of the background and the story takes over.

There are one or two places that had me laughing out load, others that had me feeling bad for various characters and still other episodes that had me raging about a characters attitude.

I also watched the 'DVD Specials'..... sort of.
I skipped through them, but they were mostly about our girls and Togo, doing something along the line of fishing while wearing their flight suits.
I guess if I had of been really interested in them, that they may have been funny, but it looks like they may just be a bad attempt at comedy.
I may actually watch them properly one day, but it's not going to be any time soon, I don't think.

Anyways, 'Sky Girls', if you liked 'Strike Witches', you should be able to get into this.

Next up is...... Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt.

Heheh, well, I probably should ask if the reason after all this WORMS situation and what happened at the ending episodes actually surprised you, well, did they ? cuz the first time I watched it was quite surprising in a way :)

Also, I wouldn't want to add girls into the stock, but have you seen Rocket Girls ?

*looks at Mic with evil eyes*
Yes, i'm adding to your already damn long list of to watch ahahahahaha XD

Well, Rocket Girls is a bit different, more slice of life and more funny, but it has a few very serious moments :)

Actually, yes, it was reasonably surprising and interesting to find out just how the WORMS came into being.
Also, the look on Otoha's face when Aisha answers her question of how old Aisha is, is priceless.

The other thing is, Nanae looks a lot like the female police officer in Lucky Star, Yui Narumi.

As for my list of 'to watch' anime.... gah, I need to go through my torrent folder and pick out everything I have watched yet.
Seriously, the list I have at the start of this thread isn't even a quarter of what I have downloaded that I haven't actually seen yet.
Yes, I think I will be adding 'Rocket Girls' to that list.

Yeah, pretty much.

I haven't torrented anything much recently, but that list is still growing, albeit slowly.

I need to go through this thread and write down all of the anime that has been recommended to me, then put the list somewhere I won't lose it, so I can get them down at some point in time.

Another thing that I've done is upgraded Firefox 3.xx to Firefox 4. It's MUCH faster.

Funny you should say that.
Freelancer Discovery uses something similar to post a chart that needs to be easy to edit on-line (to specific people) where everyone who plays on the server can see it.

I have also uploaded the latest spec sheet for my PC onto my web space, just in case my computer goes missing.  :o

For the most part though, I tend to be 'old school' when it comes to notes and stuff. The local newsagent got in a little too much stock of a small, unlined notepad, about 1/4 the size of a sheet of A4.

No idea how many pages are in them, but they are about an inch thick, they were a really good price, ONE dollar (Australian) for two I think it was, so I bought half a dozen.  :D

It's time for.....

The 'Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt' Three Episode Review!

It's rude, it's crude and the language is pretty nasty too.

Definitely *NOT* for kids!

So far I've watched just three episodes and the 'swear count' is off the chart.

The artwork reminds me of another 'cartoon' I've seen, but it just doesn't compare to 'P&S w/ G'.

It's a good job I'm a relaxed kind of guy, otherwise I would drop this like a hot potato.

Enjoying it so far.

More when I've finished watching.

Yes, I did see that bit, probably grinned at it too, it's the sort of thing I used to get with my brothers.

I think at that point in time I was still trying to get my head around the very different art used in this anime, the style is *so* familiar to what I have seen in a 'kids cartoon', all sharp corners, tight lines and basic shapes. The problem is I can't think of the name of it.  ???

I've just come off of several series of anime where there was virtually zero swearing and got hit in the face with a boxfull of it, not to mention the abundant 'innuendo' all over the place.

Still, it looks like being an interesting ride.

Oh yeah, the very first 'transformation' scene....WOO!!  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

"Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt"

First things first..... this is NOT an anime for kids or people who can't handle swearing.

Having gotten that out of the way, as has been mentioned in a previous post, this anime is like "Power Puff Girls"...... on acid, with the 'naughty knob' turned almost all the way up.

Each half hour episode has two or more 'mini' episodes in it.

Let's meet our Heroine's, Panty & Stocking, their dog, Chuck and their Boss, Garterbelt.

Panty is the original hot mama in a red dress. She's got long blonde curly hair, she's sexy, has a bad attitude and REALLY loves sex in any form. Her weapon of choice is her gun, Black Lace.

Stocking is a Goth girl with a seriously sweet tooth. She's got long dark straight hair and her attitude is just as bad Panty's is. Sweet food of any sort is her thing. Her weapon of choice is what looks like a Katana or if she is really annoyed a matched pair of them.

Chuck is their dog and he is green, capable of eating anything and generally annoying. He is also the 'mail box' for mail from heaven, usually sent by way of lightening bolt.

Garterbelt is the girls 'boss'. He's a black priest, with an epic Afro. The girls refer to him as 'Afro Priest'. Has a secret identity as 'Master G'. (dang gave that away huh). May possibly be gay and is definitely into bondage. This makes him one of the most politically incorrect cartoon characters ever.

Almost forgot, they have a car. It's looks like it might be a Hummer. It's PINK, extremely fast and is called 'See Through'. Like the Lone Rangers horse, it comes when the girls whistle for it.

With the main characters out of the way, the basic storyline goes something like this.

Panty and Stocking are 'fallen' angels.
In order to get back to heaven, they need to collect a certain amount of 'heavens'. How do they get 'heavens'?
I'm glad you asked.
They get 'heavens' when they defeat 'ghosts', ghosts in this case being earthly manifestations of things that have died in a bad way, unspoken feelings and all manner of other things.

The anime essentially has no real storyline.....until the last 3 or 4 episodes.

Panty & Stocking get given a 'mission' by Garterbelt, which they go and complete and we get to watch, while listening to awesome music.
Final 'death' scenes are done in an interesting way.
The death blow is given and then we cut to.... a paper mache model of the monster, which then explodes in real time for our viewing pleasure. It's pretty cool.

Pretty much every episode follows that basic pattern, but each one is different in it's own special way.

Around the middle of the series it was almost like the writers had 'lost their way', the episodes were fairly ordinary, but keep watching it does get better.

The OP comes at you and blasts you out of your chair with some seriously rockin' music, while the ED helps you to relax after the occasionally very wild ride.

The final episode indicates that there is another season on the way and does the thing I hate most...... leaves us with a cliffhanger.

Having watched that, the plan is to watch "Bakemonogatari". I may NOT do a review of this one, as some has already done a rather good review of it on the BakaBT Blog Page.

I guess you didn't pick up what we really did see in the show, have you wandered into the topic where we discussed the deeper meanings of the show and it's many symbolisms ?

Oh well, I am kinda surprised you didn't watch Bakemonogatari yet though, so go ahead and enjoy it :)

No, I haven't managed to find that thread for some reason.
Different people see different things.
Some people see the 'Bible' as a way to live their life, others just see it as a really good book. A controversial thing to say, I know.

If I sit and think about what I saw in "P&S w/ G", I'll probably come up with a few 'deeper meanings' of my own.

For now, though, all I can say is that it kept me entertained for a while. Maybe I'll make more sense when I'm a little more awake.
For some reason I always end up finishing a series and doing the review sometime around 11pm my time... then I can't sleep because I'm 'overtired', so I muck about on the computer for a while, then check the e-mail, then reply to something on Baka.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few other anime that people believe I would have watched already. One thing for sure, is that people will be gobsmacked that I haven't watched 'Gurran Lagann' yet and I do actually have that on my HD somewhere. I've seen some it via 'streaming anime' and got it down a while back. Probably watch it after Bakemonogatari.
Now I've noticed that I am starting to ramble on about stuff and that I'm writing a 'wall of text'. Must be tired. The clock tells me it's stopped getting late and is starting to get early.

Well, I've watched four episodes of "Bakemonogatari" and I'm a little confused as to what exactly is going on.

I know that the main male character, Araragi, is an ex-vampire.

Somehow he was returned to being a human again, but has retained some 'vampire' abilities, like accelerated healing and extra good eyesight.

So far it seems that Araragi runs into various people that have problems of an interesting type and he directs them to the person who returned him to human form, Oshino, who seems to be some sort of priest/holy person, albeit a strange one.

The other thing I have to say about this particular encode of "Bakemon"([Coalgirls]1920x1080_Blu-Ray_FLAC), is that while the subs are excellent, why, oh why, did they have to translate and sub every single sign, written sentence and basically anything that you might be able to read on screen?

Everything else about this encode is perfect, crystal clear, great sound, everything you could ever want in an anime.

I'm going to watch the rest of this series, just to see where it's going to end up.

It's not helping my understanding of things that I've been a little out of sorts the last few days. I think I'm coming down with something. bleh.

Bakemonogatari, is far as I could tell (I STILL need to rewatch it, got the CGi 1080p archived) was mainly about the relationship between Senjougahara and Araragi, though it's very arced in various other side stories (the other girl, the one with the panty shot in the first few seconds of episode 1, forgot her name) is also important in the last arc and kind of a keypart of the story as a whole.

Either way, it makes more sense after you finish it xD
