Anime that I have to watch. - now my anime review thread!

Micharus:
So....

I'm four episodes into "The Wallflower" and it's not what I expected.....but it sort of is as well.

I know that doesn't make sense, but there you have it.

So far we have four *very* pretty boys, so pretty in fact that they could almost be called 'beautiful', a rich, eccentric Aunty that keeps popping in and out, a pretty girl, 4 weird (very weird)girls and last, but not least our heroine, Sunako.

Sunako has a serious self esteem problem.... she doesn't have any, at least not since a boy rejected her two years ago, with the words "I don't have time for ugly girls".
Her Aunty has decided to 'help' her out and has handed the task of turning her into an 'Elegant Lady' to the four boys.

After watching four episodes, the only real reason I'm going to keep watching this at the moment is to see how it ends up.

So far, it's really a bit of farce. It's also reasonably funny. It won't have you rolling around on the floor, but most people will get some sort of a laugh out of it.

In just four episodes, we have met possibly all of the main characters, which is fairly normal I guess, discovered that they are all high school students and shock horror gasp, they all go to the same school.
Also, one of the boys has been kidnapped and rescued (three of the boys cross dress in order to do the rescue), we find out that Sunako is seemingly skilled in several forms of martial arts and they have had a 'culture festival' as well. In FOUR episodes.

We also see that mysterious skill that some characters have, of being able to pull amusingly large weapons of various sorts from somewhere at a moments notice.
Chainsaw with what looks like a six foot blade anyone?

To top it off, you know how it's usually the guys who get nosebleeds?
This time it's the girls or to be more precise, Sunako, whenever one of the boys touches her in any way.

I should mention that Sunako isn't ugly, although she isn't "OMG Beautiful". This is one of the things you find out in the first couple of episodes.

It's a little bizarre really, but typing this 4 episode review has helped me sort it out in my head a little. BONUS!

More on this at point later in time.

Meh.... ok, we get the idea that Havoc10k doesn't like mecha anime. Isn't there another thread that is already handling this subject anyway?
I don't want the mods to have to step in and clean the thread!  :o

So, I've just finished watching "The Wallflower", so to quote 'The Joker', "Annnnnd here we go!"

The main characters in Wallflower are;

Sunako, a girl who has self esteem issues, is heavily into horror, splatter and similar movies/games/books and has a collection of human biology manikins, chief of which is Hiroshi (sp?).

Ranmaru, He is a 'ladies' man and is quite proud of the fact. He has reddish brown hair.

Takenaga, He is a little shy, but still able to put the moves on a girl he likes. He has black hair.

Yukinojou, This guy is shy, a little on the short side and has big eyes. He has blonde hair. Is forced into situations where he ends up cross dressing.

Kyouhei, He is almost the main character of the series. He's loud, in your face and seems to care mostly for himself. Loves to eat.

As noted in a previous post, the story for "The Wallflower" goes something like this;

Four *very* pretty boys (they even 'sparkle') all live in a large mansion owned by a lady they call their 'Aunty', even though they aren't related to her.
Aunty is in fact their landlord and she is an attractive landlord indeed. She is also slightly eccentric.

She makes a deal with the four boys to turn her niece, Sunako, into a 'Elegant Lady'.
If they succeed, in return they will get to live rent free, however if they fail, their rent will triple.

What she doesn't say, is that Sunako has some serious self esteem problems..... she doesn't have any. This is due to being rejected by a boy with the words "I don't like ugly girls".

Our heros first meeting with Sunako is somewhat comical, with Yuki sensing 'something' in the hedge.....
This something turns out to be Sunako, who is spying on them.

As the anime moves along, we discover that Sunako is the 'perfect housewife'.
She can cook, clean and look after the house with the best of them, but she is a bit of a 'shut in' and likes her own company.
We also discover that Sunako has an almost morbid liking for anatomical dummies, to the point where she has a small collection of them, along with 'specimens' in jars.
Sunako also finds things like blood, skeletons and other similar things extremely enticing and can be obsessive in her pursuit of them.

Sunako refers to the boys as 'creatures of light' and tends to have nosebleeds if she gets too close to them or is held/touched by them.

Eventually Sunako makes friends with a girl called Noi, who has a major crush on Takenaga, who eventually returns her affections, to Noi's delight.

There are two 'groups' of girls at the high school that appear from time to time.
They are;

The 'Goth Girls' and 'The Spray tan girls'.

The 'Spray Tan Girls' and you will figure out why I call them that almost immediately, don't get a lot of screen time. They are your typical bullies and because Sunako lives with the 'four princes' she is a target for them.

The 'Goth Girls', four girls who are self styled 'Goth' girls and dress the same, are rabid fan-girls of the 'four princes' and get a lot more screen time than they really deserve.

There are a number of 'kidnappings' that happen in this anime.

Hiroshi, Sunako's favorite anatomical mannikin, gets 'kidnapped' TWICE during the anime and one of the boys also gets kidnapped.

The Wallflower is a comedy/drama (in my opinion) and is the closest thing to a western style cartoon that I have ever seen in anime.

Sunako spends 90% of her time in 'chibi' form, only changing to 'normal' when she is doing something serious, like laying waste to everyone in the immediate area when she is annoyed.

There are many, many comical situations, I'm not going to say you will laugh a lot, but you will find something to laugh at.

In each episode there is also a thing called 'The Road to Womanhood', which in most cases contain mostly useful tips on various things.

The Wallflower is a little funny, as in funny peculiar for the most part, with a lot of it being quite 'over the top'.

edit: Added some stuff and moved some words around a bit. May add more stuff later as and if it comes to mind.

Going to watch Gurren Lagann next.

Havoc10K:
so in overall, it's a serious drama comedy, with a pinch of soft cream to make it less serious and more fluffy right where it needs to be, and a slap of water flat hand where it is required ?

It's hard to put it into a category really.

Yes, it has Drama, but some of it is so over the top it's rediculous and yes, it has comedy, but I didn't find it LOL funny, although other people might.

The 'cover' of the anime shown on AniDB is almost a lie, although the boys are mostly drawn that way.

I forgot to mention that Sunako has the most beautiful eyes, they are lavender!

Sometimes a anime is difficult to do a review on, this is one of those.
It's a little frustrating when I watch an anime like this, it basically doesn't really have much of storyline, more like an idea they are writing around more than anything else.

Oooh! Remembered something I should add.

Havoc10K:
but is it more or less what I said there ?
I might add this to my list, also can you provide a pic of her with the eyes ?
