Hakugei Densetsu...

Hakugei - Legend of the Moby Dick...? What's wrong with those who pick titles?
Parts of it I admired greatly, parts I laughed at till my sides were almost sore;
other parts I read with absolute sorrow,  because I think them utterly false and grievously mischievous...

Translations can be funny sometimes can't they.

Edit: added 'Cromartie High School' to the 'List' in the OP.

I'm enjoying "Chobits".

Just finished watching episode 6.

Our hero, Hideki, is the luckiest guy in the world, in an odd sort of way.

He is also having to handle a STEEP learning curve where Chi is concerned.

There is also a surplus of cute females around, his building manager, Hibiya = cute, his teacher, Shimizu = cute, his female co-worker, Yumi = cute, not to mention Chi herself, who is probably the cutest of the lot.

What will Chi get up to next?

(No, I don't really want people to tell me.  ::) ::)  )

Only a *tiny* spoiler there Al, good work  ::)

With that, on to my review of "Chobits".

We meet our hero, Hideki, in the very first episode.
It appears that Hideki is a talking cow!

BUT! No, in fact Hideki is the hard working son of a farmer and his wife, who is currently 'helping out' on that very same farm, while waiting to find out if he got into college in Tokyo or not.

The answer is.....no.

Hideki decides to go to Tokyo anyway and enroll in a 'prep school' so he can get into college.

Once he gets to Tokyo, he finds out about 'Persocoms', which are literally mobile computers that look exactly like humans, except for their 'ears'.
While he would like to have one, they are very expensive, far beyond the reach of a poor student in need of work.

Somehow, within days of finding the place where he will live while attending prep school, he finds a job, completely by accident and then he finds a persocom of all things thrown out in the trash.

This is how Chobits starts out and we get to follow the adventures of Hideki, Chi and their friends.
Each episode has a name along the line of "Chi <insert various words>" which basically tells you what Chi gets up to in that episode.
However, what Chi does is very occasionally not the main focus of the episode in question.

Most of the episodes are 'easy watching', you need to pay attention sometimes but not often, at least not until you get further into the series.

Early in the anime, Hideki and Chi go to a book shop and Hideki buys a book with a blue cover for Chi. Keep an eye out for these books!

Hideki finds out that owning a Persocom is a little more work than it seems and some funny scenes result from his efforts to maintain Chi in the proper fashion.

Hideki's building manager, Hibiya, comes to his rescue in his attempts to teach Chi things a number of times.

Hideki's next door neighbor, Shinbo and his persocom, Sumomo, who is a 16cm high female persocom, also spend a bit of time helping Hideki understand how persocoms work.

There are many things that happen in this anime and it's not just about Hideki and Chi.
Situations happen that involve all of Hideki's friends and people he knows from work and school.
Hideki and Chi often help to resolve these problems.

There is also a surplus of cute females around, his building manager, Hibiya = cute, his teacher, Shimizu = cute, his female co-worker, Yumi = cute, not to mention Chi herself, who is probably the cutest of the lot.

Chobits is a nice easy watch, but it felt like a lot of it was 'filler' for some reason, I think it would have made a much better movie, even though it would be a fairly long one.

The ending was, while not perfect, quite good, with all of the loose ends tied up, which is rare for most anime.

While there could be a second season, I doubt that there will be.

I think 'A-Channel' is up next.

Edit: added a quote from a previous post about the number of cute females in the anime.
After a quick look at the first episode, it looks like the artwork in A-channel is similar to the artwork 'TMoHS', which can't be all bad.

A Channel was..... refreshing.

Similar in ways to both 'Lucky Star' and 'K-On!', it doesn't have any real storyline that connects the whole series, only the fact that the four close friends all attend the same school.

One thing that A Channel does right from the start is show that the youngest girl, Tooru, is in fact a year below the three other girls.

The only other slice of life anime I've seen do that is K-On! in it's second season.

This means there is a slightly different dynamic in the anime.

It's still a wonderfully warm and fuzzy anime, but the four girls aren't together all of the time and Tooru has two classmates, Yukata and Mihoru, that provide some 'comedy relief', with Mihoru keeping Yukata under control using the '3 minute rule'.

The first episode had me doing a double take, as it opens on Tooru running up the hall with a baseball bat.

At first glance I thought 'what the heck is Nagato doing with a baseball bat?', but after watching for a bit longer you get to see Tooru's face.

Tooru, it seems, is a little possessive of Run and is at first a little suspicious of Nagi and Yuuko, Run's new 2nd years friends, but she rapidly gets over that.

As with all slice of life anime, there are the usual episodes.

The beach, the festival, the episode where  two of the characters have a misunderstanding and so on, all done in A Channels particular style.

Each episode has a piece of MUSIC in it, with the music done to fit the mood of that part of the episode.

The three main 'sensei' are;
Tooru's homeroom teacher, Kitou-sensei, an intense, 'let do this!' personality who likes to wear a white coat, which upsets the school nurse
Satou-sensei, who believes that he should be the only one who wears a white coat. He also like some rather strange things.
Kamade-sensei is Run, Nagi and Yuuko's homeroom teacher. She has a very relaxed attitude to pretty much everything.

There a quite a few funny moments in A Channel and you will be smiling at a lot of things.

One of the funniest moments for me was near the beginning of episode two, which made me laugh so loud that my mother came in to see. When I showed her, she laughed too.

Of course there are sort of sad moments in the anime, particularly in the last few episodes where Tooru realizes that a certain situation is going to eventually happen again.

The end is well done and as with most slice of life anime, there are no loose ends, but plenty of room left for a second season to come along.

I could easily stand to see a second season of A Channel. Bring it on!

Edit: While adding A-Channel to my MAL list, it was revealed to me that there is an OVA coming, as well a Special/s! I'll be waiting on those.  :D

Really?

That's an interesting co-incidence, because the version of A-Channel I got was done by Evetaku.

Which reminds me, there is at least one reference to 'Lucky Star' in pretty much every episode and it always refers to the same thing, the 'Lucky Channel' bit that happened at the end of each episode.
Remember the hostess always had a shirt with really long arms and you almost never saw her hands? Tooru's jumper. heh.

There is also a reference to Ika Musume, or at least I think there is. It also involves Tooru again. Did anyone spot it?

Hmm, seems you got their batch, which in that case they probably didn't include it.they're labeled as special and are
all in nyaa.

as for the long-sleeves. I doubt that's a lucky star reference. they show up a lot elsewhere. probably just to show
that a character is cutesy or undeveloped.

ika musume reference? my memory on this anime is already foggy. what do you mean?

on the review. LOL @ Nagato! I also thought it was her the first time. add that their hairstyle is nearly the same.
also, your mom could relate to it? o_o. you got an awesome mom man. how old is she?

So.

I decided to watch 'Cromartie High School'.

I watched the first 4 episodes and discovered that much less than an hour had gone by.

It turns out the each episode is about 10 minutes long if you skip the OP/ED.

Thank goodness for small miracles.
Cromartie High is looking a lot like it's an acquired taste.

Having realized this, I started to watch 'Alien 9' as well.
It's only 4 episodes in all, but after watching Cromartie High, it brought me back on even keel again.

Anyway, it looks like I'll be watching some episodes of Cromarti High, then watching an episode of Alien 9.

Hopefully it will keep me sane.

Mum turned 71 this year, so not only is she a Mother, she's also a Grandmother 5 times over. This also makes me a little older than most people think. heh.
Mum and I share a very similar sense of humor.... and our noses. :p

The 'possible' Ika reference is in episode 3 around the middle, where Run gets Tooru to untuck her shirt from her bloomers. The result is a dress, that at first looks a bit like Ika's skirt, but after seeing it again while checking to see what episode it was, it doesn't really look so much like it. lol

As for it being a batch, not quite. I actually had to get it in 2 parts, one 'batch' had the first six eps, while the second 'batch' had the eps 7 -> 12.

Well, I just finished watching the last episode of Alien 9, so here is the review.

I wasn't very impressed with Alien 9 when it comes right down to the nitty gritty.

Four measly episodes. I mean seriously, there could have been a full season if they had gotten serious about it.

The basic story line is that the Elementary Schools are required to have 'Alien Control' Officers and three girls, Yuri, Kumi and Kasumi are the 'chosen ones', under the supervision of Mugemi, their overseer.

In order to do their jobs they are issued with a 'Bougu' each. A 'Bougu' is an alien, in fact a 'symbiotic' parasite, that they wear like a hat.

Each of the girls has a reason, well almost.

Kasumi has been allowed to do anything she wants by her father, under one condition, the condition being that she doesn't stop halfway through. Aside from that, she likes the job.
Kumi is doing the job so that she doesn't have to do another job that she hates because of the pressure it puts on her.
Yuri does NOT want to the job, but she isn't allowed to quit.

There is another story going on in the background also and it appears that their overseer is not exactly who she appears and that the aliens aren't exactly appearing of their own accord.

Yuri seems to be permanently scared or crying for some reason in this anime.
She just wants to be a 'normal' girl. Her alien reacts badly to her being scared all of the time and once she becomes SO scared that her fear is transmitted to Kumi and Kasumi and leads to her Bougu going 'critical'.
Yuri has a friend, Miyu, who is a great support to her.

It's not a bad anime, but it's not a great one either. A lot more could have been done with this story. The first episode is the best of the four, but it rapidly goes downhill from there, with the last episode leaving a VAST hole for more episodes to come along....but they don't and I can't see them happening.

I hear there is a Manga of Alien 9 out there and I plan on finding it if I can, just to see if it is any better than the anime.

Edit: Additional stuff.

Found and read the Manga. It's a little easier to follow than the anime and in my opinion they could have easily made another 4 episodes.
Speaking of which, the characters in the anime look like they have been lifted directly from the manga.
It's a good read and definitely worth your time to find if you can.

IIRC, that was due to the problems with censorship and low ratings. OVA covers only the first ~1.5 volumes out of 4.

Started watching "Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls" and so far I'm reasonably happy with it.

There is action, as in sword play/martial arts featuring cute girls and a guy who isn't a wuss when it comes to following his own moral code.

Also mixed in with that is....ECHHI and it's rather well done too.

I'm glad I got the BD version of this anime, even it is a pretty big torrent, coming in at 14.5 GB.

Nothing really worth censoring....yet, but there will be something eventually.

Cromartie High School is starting to be annoying.
Right now the only reason I can think of for me to keep watching it, is to see if it will get any more bizarre/strange than it already is.
I've watched up to episode 16. 10 more episodes to go, then I can at least say I have watched it.
I actually enjoyed "Excel Saga" more and that anime was pretty weird in spots.

explain yourself.

...

okay, maybe after you drop/finish it.

now excuse me as i go on marathoning D.Gray-man(more like D.Gay-man).
Watching it for Lenalee, Allen is quite awesome himself though, except his seiyuu really murders his manliness so much he sounds gay.
not that she's bad, she just sounds so feminine.

no, i seriously am not suggesting you to watch this 103 episode anime. at least not yet.

Only 103 episodes huh?

If you check the "LIST" on the OP, you will see that I have "Those Obnoxious Aliens" to watch, which comes in at 196 episodes......

If I add "D.Gray Man" to the list, I'll probably end up watching it the same way I plan on watching TOA, in chunks, like maybe 12 eps at a time with another anime watched in between.

I hope to finish Cromartie High sometime in the next few days, then I will 'explain myself'. lol.

Cromartie High School is....different.

It is comedy, but comedy that left me feeling mostly 'meh'.

Granted there were parts that I did find funny, I'm pretty sure I had a grin on my face, but mostly I found the comedy too different to what I'm used to.

Apart from that it's not a bad anime.

The characters are well animated and the basic storyline is ok.

Kamiyama, our 'hero', ends up in Cromartie High School, a boys only school that has the reputation of having the worst delinquents in Tokyo attending it.

He meets up with Hayashida, a guy with a purple mohawk that seems to be constantly moving.

Along the way they meet up with some fairly strange characters, Freddie, who looks exactly like Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of 'Queen', from when he was at the top of his game, Mechazawa, who is a robot.
There is also a Gorilla, who at some points in the anime seems to be smarter than any other guy in the show.

Each episode is around 10 minutes long if you skip the OP and ED, so even with 26 episodes to watch it would be relatively easy to knock over the whole season in a short time, but I wouldn't recommend marathoning it.

One thing that you may find funny/annoying, is that certain characters have hair that moves. Constantly and in random patterns.

While Cromartie High School didn't do much for me, if you are looking for slightly offbeat comedy, it may be what you are looking for.
