Just finished watching "Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls".

This anime is set in an alternate/parallel universe, where certain events have not happened.

As such, everything looks like it is still the Edo Era of Japan (I think?) with some not so obvious differences.

Yes they have advanced technology, seemingly similar to what we have these days, but it seems to be 'hidden' for the most part or disguised so that it's not obvious.

Our 'Hero' Muneakira, is a Samurai, who has been sent to take over a Dojo.
When he arrives there, he discovers it is already occupied by 2 girls, Yukimura and her protector, Matabei.

Shortly after, they are attacked by Hanzou, the head of the 'disciplinary committee' of the high school that the Dojo belongs to.

During the fight with Hanzou, a girl, Juubei, falls from the sky and kisses Munekira.
She then transforms into a 'Master Samurai' and proceeds to kick serious backside.

Juubei stops just short of killing Hanzou and changes back to a normal girl.

Eventually they all meet up with Tokugawa Sen, Hanzou's 'master'.

I'll leave it there as to say much more would be bad.

This is an ecchi series, if there is a chance to show breasts, panty shots or anything short of actual genetalia, it happens.

Oddly, the echhi doesn't seem to be 'in your face', even with the amount happening.

The backgrounds are wonderful, with lots of detail, while the animation is pretty good itself.
The only thing that annoyed me a tiny bit, is that every character seemed to have a heavy black line around it, which seemed to stop them from being part of the 'picture' as it were.

The characters are well designed, even the guys were 'easy on the eyes'.
There is a 'Maid' character and a 'Loli' one too and there is a character that is very obviously a reference to Vocaloid "Miku Hatsune".
Seriously, lose the bells and put Kanetsugu into Miku's clothes and she is a dead ringer for Miku.

The ending is quite good, with a LOT of action happening in the last 2 episodes.
In the final episode, which is where most of the action happens, the power levels of the main opponents goes completely ballistic.

The trope, "the bigger a girls breasts are, the more fighting power she has" seems to be applied firmly in this anime.

Is it worth watching?
Sure, if you don't mind a fairly basic storyline, with shovel fulls of echhi spread around liberally, pretty backgrounds and good music in the OP and ED.

I enjoyed it, but it is one of those anime where you don't have to think a lot in order to get something from it.

edit: re-read this review and realized it's probably not one of my better ones. lol

Just finished watching episode 4 of Narutaru.

The way it started had me thinking, 'here we go with another warm and fuzzy anime', but I rapidly discovered that I was wrong about that.

It's actually gathering a rather 'dark' mood and even this early in the anime there is definitely something happening behind the main story.

I'm not exactly sure where this anime is going yet, but it is surely going to be interesting.

Yes, it can easily compete with Elfen Lied in that respect.
Be warned though, the series covers only the first half of the manga, and there is no chance it will be completed - the second half is too risky for TV.

Watch Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.

I will, eventually.

Rather I should say, "I might".

Need to at least have a look it on AniDB and see what people say about it.

*goes and looks.

AniDB only has the OVA on it's list.

Nyaa has the series, while BakaBT has the OVA, but not series, unless it is under a different title.

Looks like it may be a little interesting.

Only 103 episodes huh?

If you check the "LIST" on the OP, you will see that I have "Those Obnoxious Aliens" to watch, which comes in at 196 episodes......

If I add "D.Gray Man" to the list, I'll probably end up watching it the same way I plan on watching TOA, in chunks, like maybe 12 eps at a time with another anime watched in between.

I hope to finish Cromartie High sometime in the next few days, then I will 'explain myself'. lol.

OIC. the main reason i'm not suggesting it is because it has fillers (first anime i skipped episodes on) and is shounen. thought that might not be something you'd like. :-\

and LOL @ Bible Black, you really gonna watch it?

Cromartie High School is....different.

It is comedy, but comedy that left me feeling mostly 'meh'.

Granted there were parts that I did find funny, I'm pretty sure I had a grin on my face, but mostly I found the comedy too different to what I'm used to

....

While Cromartie High School didn't do much for me, if you are looking for slightly offbeat comedy, it may be what you are looking for.

o_o, what the... what do you mean by "too different"? sure the format is strange, but it's pretty surreal and hilarious for me.

Wait not the warm and fuzzy part right? I mean the first 5 minutes of Elfen Lied was pure awesome blood and gore fanservice violence. With that said looks like I'll be picking up Narutaru.
If you wasted 5 seconds of your life reading this then you are an idiot and you are an even bigger idiot if you kept on reading looking for a period or something.

Yep, I'm really going to watch Bible Black. Eventually.
For a 'hentai' title, it's reasonably long and from what I've heard skipping to the bits where sex happens mean that you miss the storyline...or so I've heard.
There aren't that many hentai titles out there that have an actual storyline behind the sex, so I don't want to miss it. lol

For whatever reason, Cromartie High School didn't push my 'Funny' button as often as it could have.
It's a known fact that people from different countries find different things/situations hilarious, despite the fact that everyone around the world has a *LOT* of similar things that they find funny.

I'd be getting hold of the Manga as well, Monkeyfinger.
An earlier post tells me that the Anime only covers the first half of the Manga, so we are only getting half of the story in the Anime.
In fact  I'm going to be hunting down the manga as soon as I finish this post.

Putting aside the hentai part of Bible Black, it actually had a decent story there.
I would pay to watch Bible Black without sex and made safe instead, would be a challenge.

Yup, the first thing I did was to see if Baka had the Manga. As to where I get the uncensoring pack, I have no idea.
If I really need to have have it for whatever reason, I'll get hold of it.

Anyway, I've finished watching Narutaru, so here is a review of it.
I plan on reading the manga as well, so I'll add a review of that to this post when I've finished it.

Narutaru starts out all sunshine and lollipops, with our heroine, Shiina, visiting her grandparents.

However, it doesn't stay that way.

Shiina decides to swim out to a "Torii" in the ocean and almost drowns in the process.

She, recovers and goes back to the 'scene of the crime' or the beach near it at any rate and meets a star shaped creature, which she names 'Hoshimaru'.

After learning how to 'ride' Hoshimaru, she sees a 'Dragon' with a girl riding it.

So begins Shiina's adventures in the anime.

Along the way, Shiina meets up with Akira, a shy girl, who has a few.....issues.
Eventually, Akira shows Shiina her dragonet and it seems that it is linked to her in a way that is causing some of her..... issues.

Having made friends with Akira, Shiina takes her to a favorite place, a hill overlooking the airport where her father works as a pilot.

As the anime continues, we discover some background for Shiina and Akira.
Her parents are separated and Shiina lives with her father, doing the cooking and cleaning that her mother would normally do.
Shiina's mother works for a defense contractor of some sort. She knows that there is something out there and she is looking for them.
I get the distinct feeling that Shiina may have been a 'mistake'.

Akira's parents on the other hand, are still together. They run a small restaurant and expect Akira to help them with it, but her.... issues interfere with that.

I pity the parents in this anime, they are having a hard time of it, but despite everything, it obvious that they love their children, except for Shiina's mother that is.

As you watch more of this anime, we get to meet other people who have dragonets and they aren't all nice. In fact some of them are quite nasty.

Towards the end, we meet a girl called Hiroko, who is being bullied at school.
What the bullies don't know is that Hiroko has a dragonet and when they push her too far one night, it's too much for Hiroko.
She sets her dragonet on a path of terrible vengeance.

The anime ends, with Shiina now out of her girlish pigtails, in a highschool uniform, seemingly happy.....

Narutaru, while not on the level of 'Elfin Lied' for goriness and mayhem, is still pretty dark.
The animation is pretty average, but it is well done.
There are several story 'arcs' in the anime overall, but they are all tied together well.

More to come once I've read the Manga.
I wonder where it can go after that ending?

Edit: As promised, my view on the Manga.

The anime follows the manga fairly closely, right up until the last episode of the anime which has been changed a bit to give the anime a reasonably 'solid' ending at that point.

However, the Narutaru the Manga gets a little more interesting from there.
We follow Shiina's father to Russia of all places.

Shiina has stayed behind in Japan, but has convinced her father to take her 'backpack' with him. As we know, this backpack is in fact Hoshimaru.

The manga covers many more adventures of various types, with the various characters.
We find out what happend to one of the characters early in the anime after he has a fight with Shiina and Akira and it's not pretty.

The US armed forces get involved in an incident in Japan and nuclear weapons are used.

Shiina dies...... and comes back to life near her Grandparents house and discovers that she had/has a sister.

Then it starts to get WEIRD!

A lot of things happen and Shiina somehow becomes a person with a very powerful Dragonet under her control.

It all ends up in a world wide apocalypse of massive proportions.

I probably need to re-read the manga over again to get a good grip on it, but I have the basics down I think.

I can see why they didn't do a second season, the manga is pretty graphic and that is without applying the de-censoring pack.

That, I gather is the 'uncensoring' pack.
Thanks ;)

I didn't know what those arch things you see over paths leading to temples and also the one in the ocean were at first, I actually had to goooogle search the name for them.
Now I know they are called "Torii" and that they can often be a form of temple themselves.

Hmm.... I might have missed something there with Akira's father, but it doesn't matter to the storyline that much.

Grrrr, good job putting that last one in spoilers, no that it matters that much, I'm sure it's only a *tiny* bit of what is in store for me when I read the manga.

Will get that pack down now.

No idea what I'm watching next, I'll see what I have in my 'box of stuff to watch'.

Added these anime to the LIST in the OP;

Kobato
Figure 17
Simoun
Hyakko
Special A

I'm a little over half way through Azumanga Daioh.

I'm enjoying it, it's kind of like listening to your favorite kind of music, you know it's 'more of the same', but you don't care.  :D

Edit: I keep finding anime that I have downloaded meaning to watch them, then forgotten about adding them to the list.
Here is another one..... Kaicho wa Maid-sama

Edit 2: Getting down 'The World God Only Knows....2' now. heh

SO, here it is, the review of.....

AZUMANGA DAIOH!

This anime centers around a group of girls and a handful of teachers.

It follows their activities through all three years of High School, from day one right up until graduation and a little beyond.

The teachers are;

Yukari: She teaches English, is a bit lazy, loves any kind of free food.
Kurosawa: Also known as 'Nyamo' to Yuakri. Teaches P.E. is an active lady and her homeroom class love her.
Kimura: A strange kind of guy. I think he teaches math. His main reason for being a teacher is....he likes high school girls. Turns up in the strangest places at opportune moments. Has a sweet but slightly odd wife.

The students are;

Chiyo-chan: Chiyo-chan is 10 years old at the start of the anime and a prodigy! She has been skipped forward to first year high school because she is so smart. Has pigtails and makes friends easily. Is also cute.
Sakaki: Tall, loooong dark hair, quiet, but not shy. Athletic when she wants to be. Loves cute things and animals, especially cats, but can't own one due to her mothers allergies. I find her attractive for some reason. Sakaki seems to be Chiyo-chans self appointed protector.
Kasuga Ayumu: Known as 'Osaka' in the anime almost from the word go, because that is where she comes from. Is a bit of a 'space cadet' and seems to sometimes live in a world of her own. Has an odd way of seeing things.
Yomi: The 'steady' girl. Almost as tall as Sakaki, she also has long hair and she wears glasses. Yomi tends to keep things under control....when she can.
Tomo: Every slice of life anime has an 'Energizer Bunny'** and Tomo is it here. Never does anything by half measures, it's all or nothing with Tomo. Tomo does have a tendency to take things a little too far from time.
Kagura: Kagura joins the other girls in Yukari's class in the second year of high school, but she makes an appearance in the first year at the sports day. A member of the school swim team, she is very competitive is most things.

The anime opens with Yukari frantically pedaling her bike down the road. Alas, the chain on her bike comes off and she rolls to a halt.
A male student comes along on his bike and after stopping her from destroying the bike, starts to fix it and turns around in time to see Yukari taking off down the road on HIS bike.

We then meet the other characters in the anime, that is once Yukari finally gets to the correct classroom.

As the anime moves along, the group of friends defines itself and we discover various things about them.

We find out that Chiyo-chan's family is rather wealthy and as with most wealthy families in slife anime, her parents are often not at home when she comes home from school. However, she does have a dog called Mr. Tadakichi to keep her company.

As the anime covers the full 3 years of high school, we get to see 3 sports days, 3 summer 'camps' and 2 Culture festivals.

The girls wear 'bloomers' for sports and one of the girls always makes the comment 'why are we still wearing bloomers?' at every sports day.

The summer camps are always held at Chiyo-chan's 'summer house', which is on the beach and for some reason, both Yukari sensei and Nyamo always end up going.
On the first summer camp, they go in two cars, Yukari driving one and Nyamo driving the other.
Chiyo-chan goes with Yukari and is badly scared by Yuakri's driving.
It seems that Yukari is one of those people who 'drive by braille'.

With the anime covering running over 3 years, we see small but definite changes in the girls.

There was one thing that caught my attention and it's a little odd really.

Kagura, the girl who is in the swimming team, is always tanned during the summer because she has to spend a lot of time in the pool. The interesting thing is that she is NOT tanned all over, only in the places where her school swim suit doesn't cover, as we see when she goes to summer camp and wears a bikini. Attention to detail!!

The comedy in this anime is fairly gentle, it won't have you rolling on the floor, but you will be smiling through most of the anime.
The general mood is light and it stays that way for 99% of the anime.

The final episode has Chiyo-chan upset over the fact that her school life is ending, but by the end she comes to realize that she and her friends will still be together.

Azumanga Daioh is the benchmark for this kind of anime. If you haven't seen it you should do so as soon as possible.

** Energizer Bunny refers to a character used by a battery company as a mascot. He's pink and wears sports gear and just doesn't stop going.
