psp vs gba
« on: December 11, 2010, 07:03:26 AM »
So I've really been wanting to get a portable game system recently, either a psp or game boy advance SP, atm the only reason to get a gba is I used to have one and theres some games on it that I really love, it's cheaper...and thats about it

As for psp...i dunno, I dont follow games for non xbox 360, so I dont really know whats out there for either system...
If I went with gba I'd be getting FF advance tactics and a pokemon game (nostalgia ftw) I know ff tactics is on psp as well, but I prefer the gba version.
I'll only be using either system for games, so the extra features on a psp are of no concern to me...I also have no interest in the DS

umm...I pretty much only play rpgs, I dont like fire emblem and games like that very much *cough* zelda *cough* so the majority of gba rpgs I dont really wanna play, but I have even less knowledge on psp games, Imma go to gamestop and check out the selection, but I figured I'd ask around here to see what you guys prefer. and if you think I should go with one or the other. (also I know I can just emulate the systems, but the whole point is I want them for when I've got somethin going on with my computer or am not at home)

Maybe I'm mistaken, But I thought the PSP had the ability to emulate GBA. OFC it requires homebrew etc... so... You'd be buying an older version anyways. So... cheaper? GBA requires you actually chase down the cartridges. (and the cartridge "blow job" :P)

^ It most certainly does. Plus you won't have to buy the carts that way. Mine has a SNES, NES, MegaDrive, GB and GBA emulator on it.

The psp has a fair few RPGs btw, I made a list half a page long of ones to download the other day. Plus with the extra back compatibility if you hack, and the ability to play PSone games as well,so for me its a winner. :)

Not to mention the "generic" media abilities it has with music, videos etc. Browser is a piece of shit... but oh well.

I don't think I've touched my PSP1000 since something like the ?.5 or ?.6 days. Pretty much 6 months or a year before they had the battery hack. My bro bricked his, perma borrowed mine, and then I just gave up. PSP is a great solo handheld though. If you want to socialize, it's called a DS.

I seriously love the PSP. Really should grab a battery hack or two somewhere to use as "back up" for the so called bricked one. A cheap MSPD easily will make it a great afterthought. Patapon is pretty cool. Silly but cool.

Damn, I recall the days when my bro was like, "Hey, there's this cool game for the PSP called patapon (1)." At the time I thought it was retarded. Now, I think it's sort of nifty. :P There's like 3 patapons now?

Why? Especially considering

My last 2 games with the GBA have to be Pokemon and Golden Sun I think. I did own Kingdom Hearts, but my bro beat it and I never really got into it, so it doesn't really count.

DS does indeed have a good selection. Grab an R4/N5 and you're set with a DS lite. My only qualms with the DS is that though the graphics are "lower" than the PSP, it doesn't feel like nostalgia the way you play it. Even with the exact same game running.

Seriously though, DS is worth looking into. Not the DSi though if you're not going to touch the new stuff. But both "modded" DS Lite and PSP have their own advantages. DS has a HUGE easy access list of DS titles for the R4/N5. PSP has the more powerful emulation scene. PSone games is definitely a huge plus though (IMO).

I'd go with a PSP, better graphics, as well as GBA emu on it.

+1

Also, if you're going for the PSP
DO NOT get the PspGo cuz it's un-hackable !

get as big memory as you can too ;D

I think there's difficulties with homebrewing the PSP3000 as well. But I could be wrong.

and dammit, I didn't wanna bother with any hacks or mods, but after a very short time googling for info I really want to now...guess I'll go with psp...any badass games I should be aware of?

Well, it depends on what genres you actually enjoy ...
but these games are a MUST HAVE (In My Opinion )

Monster Hunter Series
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Phantasy Star Portable 1 & 2
Ys Series

and yes they're all RPG's ;D

Final Fantasy Tactics anyone?
Technically released on GBA but it got a PSP re-release which was "OMG AWESOME"
silly people emulate the GBA version on the PSP then realise that it was actually remade for PSP :D

There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else.

They have an unbricker though. I believe it also uses the same pandora's battery that the regular hack does.

As the people above have said, once you homebrew your psp it becomes great for portable emulation and sony's psone emulator is built in.  As for rpg's, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep came out a while ago. I also recommend Persona 1 and Persona 3 portable.  There's also shadow of destiny which is a remake of a psone game but I haven't played that one yet.

For action rpg's I believe the untold legends games qualify as well as kingdom of paradise but for a list of psp rpg's you can always check gamefaqs http://www.gamefaqs.com/psp/list-48

There are lots of great RPGs on PSP, not to mention original PSX RPGs you can buy on PSS and tons of remakes. Now I'm waiting for Tactics Ogre remake. On the other hand NDS have as much RPGs if not more...

OP said he didn't want a DS though, just a GBA.
