Do you like board games?

One of my classes this last quarter had as part of its project implementing an AI-playable version of Pylos.  It's a fairly simple game to explain and has quick games.

I think that's sort of the point ...  ;)  Fast and bloody mayhem.

And, the round board actually has more battlefield: 6 ranks x 24 files = 144 divide by 3 = 48 per homefield

vs. traditional 8 x 8 = 64 / 2 = 32

vs. other 3-way board, which preserves traditional ratios 3 x (8 files x 4 ranks) = 96 total battlefield

So, I'm really fascinated by that round board.

And, big +1 on Pylos.  When I was a kid I had that.  Gonna have to see if I can make one of those and find the rules somewhere.  Great strategy game for all ages, but really spanks checkers when you're trying to develop cognitive logic in kids.  That's what intrigues me about Kings Table; it's a nice intermediate between checkers & chess.

Love the ancient games (as I said).  Forgot to mention Senet (ancient Egypt) and Parcheesi (modern American version), known as Pachisi about 2000 years ago in India and Persia.

[ EDIT:  Hey.  Anyone know where there are free downloadable computer versions of any of these games?  There used to be a bunch that had gone into the public domain, but I can't find a freebie site just now.  I'll post back later if I find any, but if anyone knows any sites that aren't loaded with virusware, it'd be cool if you can post a recommend.  Thanks! ]

Here's the set of rules we used.  The link I posted earlier contains a marketplace where someone in the US is selling a set for $15, if you'd rather spend a little money than craft it yourself.

:D 8)  Thank you!  I figured it wouldn't be too hard to search the rules down.

I'm visiting with my brother's family for Christmas.  Making several games is part of the fun of teaching his children about them.  I'm fairly skilled with tools and crafts, which is part of the teaching, and my nieces & nephew will have several hand-made treasures for the rest of their lives.  Probably spend more on supplies than the $15 for final game ... but there's no price can be attached to building a game and then playing on it for years.

Had three rounds of Mancala with my niece last night and we're planning how to make one, possibly more like this traditional one from Africa (instead of the common 2 x 6 bowl versions sold commercially):
