You're puzzling me on this. That's what  storytelling is all about, manipulating your audience to get a response. Depending on the response you're aiming for, the means will be different.

I may be wrong, but it sounds like you're putting your own expectations above the writer's intentions.

Your point about TTGL is the prime example for that (click to show/hide)There's absolutely no compatibility between Simon and Yoko, Yoko had only one potential match -namely Kamina (as much as I hate the character)- and that one got squashed for dramatic purposes. It's what you would like to happen, but it doesn't make sense.

You're also misreading the Rock/Revy relation from Black Lagoon. It's built on a mix of fascination and repulsion, each of them represents both what they lack and somehow long for, while at the same time loathing it. Trying to build a romance on such a basis would make no sense, unless you consider giving to the 'main guy always gets main girl' trope is reason enough.

(click to show/hide) Rock knows the rest of the crew lives in a different world, and if he did break away from his old life he also clearly stated he doesn't want to cross the line that separates it from his own, be it present or past. On his side, what binds him to Revy is empathy for he sees her as someone who's been terribly damaged by life and it just pains him to see no one cares about it ... not even herself.
Revy, on her side, sees in Rock the normality she's lost and maybe still craves for. But that's a longing she can't give in, because she would then no longer be able to survive in the moral jungle she calls her home. She may wish to leave it, but she also knows she can't because she no longer has the ability to mesh with 'normal' people. See the scene with the kids playing in the park in the Tokyo Arc per example.
She knows her life isn't worth living, she knows she can't go back on the other side of the line just like Rock can't come over to hers. In the end, he just gives her a reason to keep on living. A faint glimpse of hope in a world made of darkness.

This is no basis for a romance, this is a story of crippled individuals deseperately clinging one to another.

Actually there is every reason for (click to show/hide)Simon and Yoko to get along their characters go thru major changes in the series as it progresses and for them to get together makes all the sense in the world...esp if you remember her speaking to him before the attack on the Spiral King about her former "thing" for Kamina..which was a lead in for a start of a romance between her and Simon but i guess it got killed in the editing sessions..

as for Black Lagoon it is quite clear in the last bit of the last episode of the second season that Revy and Rock has something happen, she does not want to talk about it

and i think i have every right to care about how i feel about the story as much as the writers..in fact if they are good at their job as well as good at their craft they will create stories that do progress logically and reaonsonably rather than jerk us back and forth and use denial and counter intuitive plot breaks and diversions to create tension. I am tired of tension and defeat being the liet motife of modern media.

Tatsujin says it in a couple of sentences..what i have been trying to express in three posts:

--- Quote ---Story doesn't follow along. Story is very critical (with everything else). The story in anime should follow suit from episode to episode or/and create a build-up or between characters and changing their behaviors.

I will stick to my point, whatever smoke screen you're using ... you do want stories to tread down the path you expect them to. You may phrase it 'progress logically and reasonnably', it actually means 'go the way I'd like it to'. BTW, how can you have Code Geass as fave and insist on coherence and logic ? The second season especially is a narrative trainwreck with no coherence and logic at all. Not to mention the most moronic concept crowning the whole thing (click to show/hide)Lelouch despite being a despicable scumbag, trying to go all martyr with a ridiculous 'I'll draw in all the evil of the world, so when i get killed it will be cleansed' idea , the same crap resurfacing in a slightly altered form in Gundam 00 too.

You're also partly contradicting Tatsujin's statement in the sense that the 'set from the start/carved in stone/obvious' relationships you're wishing for go against the -changing behaviour- part of his statement.

You want easy to follow relationships ? Your pick, just don't go stating that anything that doesn't stick to that model is no good. Even real life doesn't follow that pattern. You're just downgrading relationships to the status of some decorative element, kinda like 'stick to the bare essentials and don't confuse us'.

Girls falling for cardboard main protagonists. There,I just named 90 % of harem themed anime.
The guy is an obvious douche with absolutely no redeeming quality except that sometimes he gives a fuck.Wow,he gives a fuck ! It's so fucking rare.
Let's shower him with 100+ girls .I mean, come on,he holds an umbrella when it's raining and all of a sudden he's a knight is shining armor.A bloody umbrella and he's the one you are going to marry?
It's like watching Twilight but the vampires/girls being mildly interesting...still sparkly though.
I stop watching any anime when shit like this happens.I'm sick and tired of writers inserting themselves in the anime.
Worst offender :Tenjou Tenge.
(click to show/hide)A retard(srsly,he is mentally handicapped) is thrown out of a window and falls in bathhouse where he sees a girl naked that immediately falls in love with him because of this...W T F ?!
Also, again, worthless main protagonist inherits, receives a power from someone and people look at him like he did something amazing and after that all he does is train with power.Big fucking woop.
It's like bringing a gun to a fist fight, shooting the opponents and then bragging and receiving applauds for being such an awesome fist fighter.
Worst offender:Again,freaking Tenjou Tenge:
(click to show/hide)Everyone train themselves to death from birth except the moron that inherits the power and then proceeds to kick ass with it.Yey...
