Bad guys (and good guys) not using their ultimate form/style right away.  Instead they use some shitty, inferior style just to show respect or something.  That or they can transform into multiple forms and they decide to start out battles in their weakest one then progressively change into stronger ones as the fight gets harder.  Dragonball is the biggest offender of this one.

I think they don't want to show the opponent their ultimate attack since the biginning, 'cos that way, the other one won't be able to dodge it the next time he try's to finish the fight. Anyway, talking about Dragon Ball, if I was Goku, I would use the Genki Dama right away (isn't the Genki Dama undodgeable? 'cos it seems that way), but... the fact is that I'm not Goku soo...

Just to chip in to that "Full Power right away" list of comments...

Sometimes that trope is done right, most of the time it isn't. One reason not to fight at full power from the start is to gauge your opponent, and figure out when you could best use that one attack that would decimate them, or to avoid overexerting yourself by getting your powerful attacks dodged early. Alternatively, there's the infamous "battle of attrition" where you convert your full power into a goal to just tire out your opponent before you tire out yourself.

Unfortunately, that trope is misused far too often, and the reasons for not fighting at full power are rarely given, and even more rarely make sense. "Ha! You're strong, let me fight at full power then!" That is the single most overused reason given for that trope, and it's the one that makes the least amount of sense.

Then again, we are talking about a media where it is normal to call your attacks before performing them.

It doesn't matter how much the boy and the girl fight each other. they are in love.

This.

It's something I see a LOT in anime, the girl who continually hits and/or beats the snot out of a specific guy on a regular basis, either loves that guy and hasn't realized it yet OR loves that guy but won't admit it to herself, usually until it's almost too late.

You boys need to see how bad it gets in Korean dramas. "OMFG so cute" is something I hear about this cliche on a regular basis. Not all dramas, but some of them are pretty bad. (Maybe like 20-30%)

It's almost its own genre.
