Good disk defragger?

just curious if anyone knew of any good disk defraggers. I should defrag some of my externals and i never was too fond of the built in windows one (using win XP) I've heard other people complain about it in the past, suposedly vista was even worse. Are there any good ones out there that do a better job?

fuck yes, time to advertise open source.

ultradefrag, it can defrag on boot time, meaning, no locked files so it can move/defrag stuff around freely.

I have used Defraggler, from Piriform (the people who make CCleaner).  It defragmented the drive.

diskkeeper used to be decent. Recently, I've seen it to be sort of meh. The trial itself is good enough to work with though.

+1 both of these.  Currently use both, used Jkdefrag for something like past 5-6 years and switched to MyDefrag for some systems, usually Win7.  I often use these to move all files to the end of the drive (first defrag), then defrag 2nd time with optimize.  I usually get a noticeable performance boost for the effort on the system/OS partition about once every six weeks (or after major maintenance updates/install-uninstall events).  You can boot to Safe Mode and run them; I usually kill all unnecessary processes and run overnight for large/full drives.

Windows defrag is not bad anymore.  Used to be Not So Good, but from WinXP sp3 and up it's more than good & reliable enough for the vast majority of needs.  JKDefrag/MyDefrag actually is just a user interface to unlock win defrag features.

I'm a fan of Piriform's CCleaner for some time (strong recommend); haven't played w/ their Defraggler much, but it seems as good as any and I'd trust them.  Ultradefrag seems to have a good rep from what I've seen, so I'd also give it some trust to play around with.

I use this. Piriform is pretty good. Their products (only 4 of them atm) are all nice.

Mayby thats true, but why builded defrag in windows 7 tells me that i got fragmentation on 4 disk after analyzing it on 0% and defraggler says its 7/21/3/11% ?:) something fishy :)

I will try that Defraggler thing - i like the list of file when clicking on [] in gui :)

Pros being an automatic defrag that continually optimizes when there is low cpu utilization. Of course it also includes the usual stuff of scheduling, auto-shutdown etc.

XP disk defragger isn't bad. You can see it doing stuff, but it doesn't move anything.
Vista disk defragger is a piece of shit. Slow and no way to know what the status is.
7 defragger is very interesting and quite decent. fast and proper. But I still prefer defraggler.

The only downfall of defraggler is no boot time defragging afaik. But quick defrag is fucking great to reduce fragments on an HDD super fast. (35-50k files in approx 8 months from maybe 20 the last time I touched those machines.)

I see very little use of boot time defragging being useful unless it's a personal computer. Work computers... no point. Let it die~ish, request corp upgrade and see if you can get a freebie that's semi useful for HTPC or making a modem or w/e.

Steam's being an idiot. All defragging will do is wear the SSD down a little quicker.

using this one too, has the option to consolidate files so I can prioritize my games and IDE's on the outer regions of my drives make it run faster  :)
