How do you open .rar manga files.
« on: January 15, 2011, 07:59:02 PM »
I did a search for this and could not come up with anything. I just stared downloading and reading manga so I have not had this issue before. Is there a program I download for the .rar files?

I am quite sure many other tools exist to extract .rar files. This happens to be the one I use and it works just fine.
http://download.cnet.com/Free-RAR-Extract-Frog/3000-2250_4-10804840.html

Simply click the .rar file you want to extract and the program does does the rest of the work, instantly extracting either in the folder its already in or you can set it to extract anywhere else that you want.
Also, 100% free

You can use www.7-zip.org

There's several other programs, but most people like using 7-zip since it's free, and easy to use.

most manga readers can read the pages directly from the archive, so you don't even need to extract them.

If you can afford (or *cough* pirate *cough*) ACD See, that's the best to read manga.

Not really, with MangaMeeya or CDisplay you don't need to unpack archives, and can keep reading without interruptions regardless if it is packed in archives or unpacked and sorted by folders. Which can be a tad annoying if you're using ACDSee or other normal image viewing software...

As is often the case, we have a helpful wiki page addressing this, although this particular one can use a bit more expansion.

If you're looking at archives containing only images (like manga), Manga Meeya is a good choice, as has been brought up a couple times already. I know it supports zip and rar, but not sure about other formats.

For general archive purposes, 7-zip and Izarc are among the best free ones. Personally I use Izarc and it's awesome. AFAIK it handles all existing archive types.

I use ACDSee to read manga since 2001. Never had to unpack a single archive.

Last time I tried out those manga readers, their image quality sucked if you have those insanely large scans and not so big monitor (or vice versa). zooming/panning was not smooth. iirc, there were no zoom lock/pan lock either.
The only advantage they have is they are "compatible" with chapters..you are sent to next chapter's first page after you reach the end of a chapter (it is possible to do the same with acdsee but setup is complex).
So I just have to double click 2 times when I reach at the end of a chapter.

I always use CDisplay ... though I did find one manga recently that it could not view/handle 2 or 3 pic files in the rar/zip ... and it doesn't handle rar/zip files within a rar/zip ...

Those would have been my words exactly.

But yeah, aside that CDisplay is good. Does have some issues with badly numbered pages at times though.

Because we can!
