Steamjaculation.
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:02:33 AM »
I have jizzed.

Quote
If you play Portal 2 on PS3, you can play with people on a PC. Neat! And to make sure as many people as possible are doing just that, the PS3 version of the game will include the PC version.

All players have to do once they get the game is link their PlayStation Network and Steam accounts. Once that's done, they'll have a Steam Play (so, PC and/or Mac) version of the game ready to download in their library list.

This cross-platform play even extends to giving PS3 users the ability to chat to PC gamers, and vice-versa. Oh, and PS3 users can even save their game in the Steam Cloud, meaning Valve has them tucked away in their servers in case something ever goes horribly wrong with your PS3.

That's a whole lot of "firsts" for both Steam, the PC multiplayer service of choice, and Sony's PlayStation Network. Not to mention a free copy of the game you can, for example, take with you on a laptop when you're not on your couch with the PS3.

And if all this works, and works well, let us welcome out glorious cross-platform future with open arms!

Now I can finally get a console! The only thing keeping me from it was the cost of games/DLC.

I <3 Steam!

*cough* what? Are you that much of a PC fan to really say that Console games are dumbed down? So you think Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, MGS4, Resident Evil 4, Uncharted 2, Halo Series, Okami, God of War, Shadow of Colossus, and the countless great games on consoles are dumbed down compared to good PC games?

I love PC gaming, don't get me wrong, but saying that Console games can't stand up to PC games is also a very one sided. There are plenty of games that are better on consoles than they were on PC (Resident Evil 4 and Halo's 1 and 2 are just a few examples). At the same time, there are obviously games that are on consoles that were willfully better on the PC (Dragon Age and Half Life 2 are just a few examples). Saying one is better than the other is no way to look at it. I personally hope to see MMO's see cross platforming in the near future!

where did i say console games are dumbed down? (if i read my own comment correctly i was talking about PC games...)

it's a matter of fact that console and pc are game platforms with distinctive differences. while console games tend to have problems with fast+precise screen movements or with detailed/multi-structured option panels, PC games have problems when it comes to fine grained accelerations or comboactions.

unfortunately the general strategy for a multi-platform games seems to be to completely disregard the advantages and disadvantages of the platform PC and instead just create a console game that more by chance runs on a PC too ("oh, the mouse control plays like crap? - well, just buy yourself a gamepad, lol" "what? you don't want the targeting assistant? - then switch it off (great new pc "feature") and live with the crappy slow manual targeting - no, we don't plan to fix that").

thus everything that blurs the line between console and pc imo results in a drop of quality at least in the PC segment. the same likely applies to some ported-from-pc console games too, only that they are forced to at least try to change something because they can't just tell a console user to buy a mouse.

i'm not sure exactly what you expected as you created this thread ("hail Steam!"?), or what can be considered "on-topic" for "steamjaculation", but it seems to me discussing the potential effects of a move that brings pc and console games further together is rather relevant to the topic.
all caps not, though ;)

But whatever, I'm fine as long as this thread doesn't get locked, for the Steamjaculation cannot be contained.

No, it's more like a superjaculation because of multi-platform support.
I can splooge from a PS3 to a PC and back at the speed of light internets.

Called reading between the lines. I totally agree with you though, auto aim should never been made on any game. That, and the whole concept of the PC version of a multi-platform game is put on the back burner compared to the console version. Sadly, the gaming industry is a business... and what does business usually do? Minimize costs, maximize profit. It's easier for the average person to buy a $300-$400 console ($199 if you like Wii), then to spend $800 and BUILD their own computer. This means if a gaming company wants to minimize costs and maximize profits, you'd have your developers work on one environment (be it the Playstation, Xbox, or Wii thing), it's less work for the programmers, art designers, modelers, etc. If they did the same game for PC, they would have to do all sorts of tests on different hardware for programmers to make sure the code works right on a wide range of computers, art designers would have to make different textures to work on low, medium, and high caliber hardware, and modelers would have to make sure the game runs smoothly while in motion... on all those different types of hardware. That's more costs to "hopefully" get more people to buy the game if it runs on their system. Then again, they can just download it and have it for free. PC gaming is sorta ruined because of this and it saddens me to see developers turn towards more console games... but places like Bioware and Blizzard still have my hope card for PC games (The Old Republic and Diablo III are just a couple of games I am looking forward to on the PC). So no, I agree with you, console games may be dumbed down compared to PC games... multi-platforming is iffy... but if someone can pull it off (and I know Valve can)... then let their be a combination of PC and console.

What is saving the PC games is Steam. Steam's network is amazing and makes it worth paying money for the games. Most gamers that I know don't download the games for free anymore because those games you can only play single player and the real game is in the multiplayer. If it wasnt for steam I bet most gaming developers would have converter over to consoles.

You can just as easily pirate console games. You can't go online, same deal as PC. Console games usually cost more than PC games as well.

A PC does not cost 800 dollars to build. That is a computer that is ~twice as good as a console. If you want to play console ports you can build a cheaper computer since all the current consoles are old. PS3 is somewhat decent, but still pales to most mid computers. I also don't see why people don't add TV/sound to the costs for consoles as they usually add monitor for a PC. A PC can also be upgraded, so generation shifts are cheaper since you can keep monitor, keyboard, mouse, sound, casing (in most cases) and so on.

As for releasing on consoles, you have licensing fees there. Those might even be more expensive than testing for computers on smaller titles.

Ugh. As blu said. Shit PC games incoming!
I don't get on with blu at all, but I cannot help but agree.
Game manufactorers will make shitty games for PC and port them. They'll be made shit so they can port without any difficulty. =(

Don't you mean the other way around? Design games for console and then port to pc (or make it "multi platform" as they call it, favouring the console dynamics)

I remember the time when PC games did not have context based controls just because console games don't have enough buttons.
Anyway, it is the developers who are to blame, not the consoles.

Ha, I have SOME faith in SOME developers to make great PC games... but no one chooses to recognize them. What happened to StarCraft II? What about Mass Effect 2? Civ 5? Battlefield Bad Company 2? Bioshock 2? Fallout: New Vegas? These were all great PC games that were released JUST LAST YEAR. I don't wanna believe PC games are going to crap, and if they are because of stupid crossplatforming, then I guess they'll just have to release the next set of consoles with a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller.

Yet another reason I should've got a ps3 rather than an Xbox... I think I actually WILL trade it in soon, it's never too late!  :P
There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else.

Mass Effect games: shitty "hug the wall" context based controls, screaming "made for console!!!" as soon as you start to play.

Battlefield series: They were actually pretty good up to BF2. After that when they started with multi platform we lost following things: Airplanes, big maps, 64 players, two classes. If battlefield 3 will be just as dumbed down as Bad Company games, then I will never touch that piece of shit again.

Fallout: When Bethesda started with multi platform, their games turned to shit. Transition from PC game Morrowind to console port Oblivion dumbed down The elder scrolls games by ditching Spears, medium armour, as well as skills in short and long blades, blunt weapons and axes. Also because console gamers are using gamepads, they had to dumb down the entire interface so that it becomes as annoing as possible. And fallout? PIP boy is another example of really annoying "made for console" interface. Bethesda can go to hell.

Also Bioshock 2 is crap compared to the first one, but that has nothing to do with consoles, so it's off topic.
