DeadSpace II Devs troll unsuspecting moms ..... to the MAX

Call me a crusty old man if you will, but why the fuck would anyone care whether the games one plays are considered cool? If I try a game and enjoy it, I will buy it. I don't care if it's trendy; I don't care what my mother thinks about it; I don't care if owning it makes me cooler.
All this advertisement did was make me feel as though the game was made to appeal to people 10 to 15 years younger than I am. While I wasn't really interested in purchasing the game prior to seeing this, I'm now infinitely less apt to do so.

What you laid out is EXACTLY the point of this piece of marketing. Am 45 myself so if you wanna talk about crusty and old
i wrote a few pages in the book.
Its meant to appeal to mid teens.
Its meant to give them rather spurious sense of being an edgy rebel.
Its meant to give them cool bragging rights in the school playground.
And its meant to do all that because that will make HUGE sales for the devs and publishers.
You can predict the result HUGE SALES, MAXIMUM PROFITS, maybe even some good exposure via negative stories in the mainstream media too.
What do you want the marketing dept to do, discuss symbolism and semiotics in Bauhaus influenced 1930's cinema ?!?!?
They aim for where the market is ....... obviously, and try to communicate in ways that speak to THAT market.
I still find what they did with these moms pretty hilarious though.
I probably agree with you on the gaming quality vs clinched marketing. As if you read some reviews or even the devs own list of features it sounds very much like the game has been devolved from a survival horror game into a much more traditional horror/FPS. So simplifying both the difficulty, and game play to further appeal to a mid teens gamer market, who want to be able to 'ownz' a game properly.
It sounds like its been Mass effect 2ed = simplified, dumb down, console friendlied, had its difficulty fangs pulled ( IMHO Bioware eviscerated Mass Effect 2, but hey they had huge sales, eye candy huggers love it, made me wanna ritually murder the devs ... but whatever )
Kinda sad as the first Dead Space was an excellent tense and genuinely scary game. But i'll probably give it a download ... probably what i will not do is spend weeks playing it like i did the first one. But you never can tell until you get to play it.
