^ my lol'd ;D

I was wondering how does my language sound for someone who does not understand it... some Greek person who knew Russian told me that it kind of sounds like Russian, but I really do not want to believe it...

^ I copy what Brownsy said :P

P.S. French sounds gay xD It is a language that was made to blow up your brains.

Meh, most nordic languages sound like the guy you're talking to is preparing to spit in your face.

Because we do  ;)

Russian? Unlikely... "in soviet Greece it all sounds like Russian to me"... yeah, you get the point. There are many languages that have similarity, unfourtunatly all but two are extinct. Now it's only Lithuanian and Latvian left. The Roman holy empire, Teutonic knights and later Russian Empire did their best to reduce Baltic languages to only two remaining.

Hopefully the baltic languages will thrive even though there are not that many that speak it as there used to be.

Polish is not one of Baltic language... He is right there is only Latvian and Lithuanian left from the Baltic languages. But there are 3 Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

And there is a good chance that in 100 or so years there will be hardly anybody speaking Latvian (few thousands) as our government is trying really hard to make all Latvian people run away from Latvia or stop reproducing...they have done really well on the stop reproducing part.

I meant them as in the kingdom of Poland and Grand duchy of lithuania suppressing the baltic languages in the past.

^ oh sorry
true they did some damage, but it did not do to much harm to Latvia, just a little part of it so one of Latvian dialects (Latgalian) is almost extinct, but we are doing something to revive it, it is quite popular right now.
But as far as I know about Lithuania, the bad thing Polish did there is the religion and cultural stuff they ruined. Even I who lives next to them do think that they lack distinctive culture, but they do value their language and even they have been able to get rid of most people who talk Russia. Russian people are the problem...

How in the fucking world could you write anything about a country if you even did not know what is the national language of the country? Even wikipedia knows that
are you from America? [edit] written in heat of the moment, it was not my intention to insult anyone[/edit]

I understand if people do not know where Latvia is at all as we are quite small, but if you try to write something about it.....

Ouch, you either did not read the posts above or try to troll Harpy by pointing to the language that was forced upon them during the USSR era.

Besides, Russian is a slavic language, a group that is different from Baltic one, i could also mention that Russian is not the best representative of a "pure" slavic language as it was "contaminated" by the Mongol Empire rule that lasted 200 years, so any similarity with Baltic languages is even less.

Isn't it funny how you can spot americans when they make comments like that?
You go like, oh, that guy must be from the States. Yup, right again.

Just for the record, most countries in Europe have their own language.
Finland has five languages, with two being official languages and three being minority right ones, for example.
This is not counting the immigrants of course.

I don't even think anyone knows how many languages Russia really has but maybe around a hundred might be close.

And half of Russian is Swedish, like the word Russki itself, which means Swedish. Ironic? Perhaps. Got to do with the swedish sailing the rivers, making trading ports, like novgorod, for example, and the slavs there asking for a king from Sweden to stop their infighting.

Because we can!

If the assignment he had was similar to one my cousin did recently, the whole idea of writing the embassy is to gain that knowledge, meaning its something you didn't have prior. Its not as if something like that is common knowledge to a middle school kid halfway across the globe.

However, the fact that by the end of the assignment he still didn't know is a bit...

Like I said I was in middle school at the time (about 14 years old..i am 39 now. how many 14 year olds could even find Latvia on a map. I could because I loved geography. I chose Latvia becasue I knew nothing about it) at that time you were still part of the USSR but didnt gain independence until 1990 or 91, and yes I am American.

edit: I also didnt receive much just a few pamplets. compared to people who wrote to some common and larger countries. I chose Latvia because I didnt know anything about it at the time.

What I remember from school we had to learn all the states of the world in 7th grade. That's 13 years old. And as I understand we start school two years later than you from the states, so shouldn't every 14 year old be able so show where it is?  ::)

we did the same here.
I bet you also had to know the capital and the language they speak. And maybe most popular know things about the country. I remember that remembering all the stuff in Africa was pain in the ass....

@rathoriel - oh if it was that long about then yeah, that may be true that they did not tell you that we did have our language (we do have it and have had it for quite some time, the write part of it is rather young, but still)

Getting a bit off topic here but-
You are taught what you need to know to enter the work force and earn a living. Its considered basic education (elementary - high school) Real learning doesn't begin until college in the states.
