Download - Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta
« on: January 26, 2011, 08:08:58 PM »

Some of you may recognize this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aid-ze7p-yY as it is one of the first results that comes up when you do a Youtube search for "Yoshinori Kanada", so a lot of people have seen it. What seems to be a lesser known fact is that the OVA it's from is actually really interesting beyond Kanada's input (character design, and that one scene) - it has the work of key animation superstars like Tatsuyuki Tanaka ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL5IWsIAGmY ) and is overall a very visually creative little anime. Nonetheless, it is also partially a lost OVA - it is only available on Nyaatorrents as a really, really low quality .flv rip straight from Nico Video. There are some copies available on Amazon... but they're in VHS and Laserdisc format only and it has not been released on DVD or Bluray or anything.

But here's the catch: a better quality upload of it IS available somewhere... on the hard drive of a Japanese key animation otaku going by the name of "Suteaka" on Youtube, the same guy who uploaded the Kanada and Tanaka clips. He had this weird tendency to constantly make new accounts, and his current one is "suteakaOP" which focuses on anime openings only. So before doing something like paying someone to buy it and rip it using the outdated hardware needed for such a task, I want to look for someone who could potentially translate a request that I would then message the guy, hoping he would put it up on Share or a torrent site or something. Is anyone willing to help out with this?

edit: here is the message I have in mind. Written by an anonymous 4chan poster because I am horrible with words:

"Hello! This may seem like an odd message but I noticed you uploaded the "Down Load" aka "Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta" on one of your youtube accounts a while back in remarkably good quality.
I'm a fan of animation and this is one of the rare gems that is difficult to obtain today. I'm afraid that it will never be remastered and released on dvd and bluray because it's not popular and well known.
For this reason I have a request of you. Would it be possible for you to upload the whole OVA in the same quality as the youtube clip you already shared?
A very low quality version of the entire OVA is already available, but I feel that animation fans deserve a better viewing experience and you can provide it. Its value today lies only in its worth to the animation fans so I feel
that sharing it would benefit everyone that is interested in quality animation. A lot of these older shows deserve to be enjoyed by old fans and a new generation of anime viewers.
Please consider it. That is all."
- The message that needs translating

I think that perhaps scouring Share or Perfect Dark or something for this might help too, but I can't use those. Just any way to acquire this would be very helpful. And naturally if we got an actual good quality rip, subs would be perfect... it's a very short OVA after all.

edit edit: talked to someone who knows the Youtuber about asking him AND I will probably be getting a translation of the message later tonight so I may not need the translation anymore. I still think there should be a thread about this OVA though.

edit edit edit: got it translated, and sent

Hello !
I do not have really anything interesting or profound to say. I just wanted to thank you for your idea and I really hope it will bear its fruits.
I am a fan of Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta, which i have searched for for a dozen of years online before locating this flv rip online last year.
I'd be thrilled to be offered the opportunity to see it in better quality.
I don't know how I could help you but if I have an opportuny, I will be glad to do.

Edit - speaking of the devil; you mentionned Tanaka's involvement in this OAv, I just wanted to point out he happen to mention this experience in passing and among others in this old interview he gave some years ago
http://www.style.fm/as/01_talk/tanaka01.shtml
Seemed like a fun project ^^

yeah, I PMed the guy and the anime blogger left him a message too but it doesn't seem like he wants to share it. so in the end I guess someone will have to buy the laser disc release and rip it; god knows I might even pay you for it.

The LD release seems to be pretty rare; I rarely, if ever, see on YAJ. But if I see it I will buy it. I have friends like me interested in the preservation of obscures 80/90s OAV and we will probably be able to generate a rip quickly.

Even a VHS-rip will be better quality than the flv file.

I don't have any capturing devices, but I am as interested in watching this OVA as I am in restoring it if necessary (most likely will). Im behind some restorations like Millennium Actress HD, Kujira no Peek (still on process), Catnapped, several Koji Morimoto shorts, and Hashire Melos which I had to rely on the encoded file as the ACR guys didnt answer to my RAW petition.

Maybe you should ask BlueFixer. IIRC, he is able to make good LD rips.

I'll admit that I'm kind of poor now so the "I will pay you to rip this" thing won't apply for a while.

HOWEVER: another rip, arguably better http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm7035643

Dunno if it could help, but in "The Anime Encyclopedia: A Guide to Japanese Animation Since 1917, Revised and Expanded Edition" there is a part that mentions this OVA, it says exactly -

So it turns out there is a rip now. Still not a very good one however.

yeah, not very good still, I remember one video posted on youtube (that I downloaded at the time) by a guy who used to upload key animator works, one by tatsuyuki tanaka had a very good quality sample of the Namiamidabutsu OVA. The account no longer exists which is very sad because he had many good key animation references of known artists...
