Certainly a lot better than the setup you've got. RAID 0 in a cheap, proprietary external is psychotic.
Although if you've got the space, an internal hardware RAID card would be cheaper and more reliable.
Hell even if you don't have the space, if you're going to go the raid route anyway, just build a dedicated file server. A decent case, PSU, 4GB of ram, and an Athlon II with a decent motherboard, running Nexenta would give you all the functionality of the drobo with better performance and expandability. The $400 you'd save building it over buying the drobo would buy 4 or 5 2TB drives.

It's a laptop, so no internal raid :(
My current raid setup just died because it was RAID0, so I am looking to buy something else.
Everything that can hold 8 drives is SO EXPENSIVE.
