I read the manga first, which is probably my favorite seinen manga. But after reading it, I didn't feel like watching the anime. I just felt like the "magic" would be lost. I don't think I ever will.

I haven't read the manga (I'm not that into manga), I just felt the pacing of the series was terrible. I don't mind when it goes down to a walking pace and takes it's time to set and state things clearly, but -beyond a certain point- Monster comes to a crawl for far too long without adding anything significant.

At some point the general mood is set, the characters are pretty well defined and the outlines of the general narrative become quite clear, and yet the story keeps moving way too slowly. I know it's supposed to enhance both atmosphere and psychological aspect, but it mainly kills the storytelling, which is quite a shame because the story's good.

I saw a R1 set in a store a while back and contemplated picking it up, as I am one of those evil Dub watchers..  But I can't remember if the entire series is/was released in R1 or not,  and without heavy censorship.  I do remember reading something about that somewhere, I think.

R1 release is only up to episode 15.  The company that licensed Monster for R1 distribution dropped the series, cancelled.  That is the reason why R2 DVDs with Subtitles is the only alternative to the DTV rips now.

Monster is not like other anime.  As you can see, there are a lot of posts here from viewers who are not accustomed or patient enough for this series.  Monster goes into much greater depth than any horror/mystery anime I've ever seen.  The entire 74 episodes is about one main plot.  It's not a series with numerous story arcs, it's just one massive disturbing story that unravels in great detail over 74 episdoes.

First off I don't think Death Note is similar to Monster.  Death Note is just about a bunch of arrogant, pretentions twats who think they are either clever or devious when in reality, they are all morons.  It's a show for kids and worked fine.  Monster I feel is a more mature anime.  It doesn't impose it's own view on you.  The anime allows you to come to your own opinion, your own conclusion.  It's a not a constant drivel of opinions from a pretentious mangaka like Death Note was.  As you can see, I was not a fan of Death Note, but Monster is among my favorite.

I do like silly and nonsensical anime.  Like Gintama, Ping Pong Club, GTO etc... But when anime like this try to discuss some serious issues, then yes, I'm a bit more critical.

Anyways, if you are patient, and want an anime that explores and goes into great depth, then this is it.  If you just want constant action, multiple story arcs etc, then pass on Monster.

Monster's problem wasn't JUST that it was long, tedious, and redundant and should have been done in much fewer episodes. From a literary critic's perspective it was nothing too special either. I'd appreciate if you describe the moral qualms and choices it forced the viewer to make, values it forced the viewer to question, etc. I don't recall any. Half the episodes exist for the sole purpose of making Tenma look good, which equates more to a vain fantasy than legitimate character development to me.

I didn't like it. Pace was waaaaay to slow, and this is from someone who liked Aria and Umi Monogatari. I also didn't feel anything for the characters. For the life of me, I couldn't identify with Tenma, since, IMO, it was his own stupidity/naivety that cost him his job, his life (not the actual life), and let loose a monster on the world.

What I'm saying is, I would have operated on the politician, and I would have lived happily ever after. Also, lots of people wouldn't have suffered.
