TROLL HUNTER A must see !!!!!!
« on: February 06, 2011, 02:10:37 AM »
Hi folks
You must see this awesome movie !!!!!!!!
Perfect antidote to the unimaginative studio trash that Hollywood is pumping out all to often.

Basically a bunch of Norwegian media students stumble onto the scoop of the century ...... trolls exist, the government
know and most of the legends you got told as kids about them are true .... well most of them.  ;D

Made on a shoestring budget this film puts most of Hollywoods recent output to shame, CGI is absolutely tremendous.
Packed with low key humour thats as dry as the sahara.

Watch this film ........ and the next time you hear someone comment or Nordlanders lack of a sense of humour tell them to STFU then set their trousers on fire !!!!

Why link the 480p when there is a 720p? Especially since you say the cgi is good...

Links were intended purely for informational purposes m8.
I expect people to be capable of actually searching out whatever content they desire in the format of choice
by themselves  ::)
If you have a link to an eng subbed 720p then i suggest you post it ....... someone way find it useful.

The CGI is exemplary especially when you consider the budget.

@dyk
Well am English and i think i got most of the folklore references too, am kind of old so that probably helped. But i think its accessible to a most people who know a few European fairy stories, even those who don't should still be able to enjoy it.

I never said it was ground breaking ......... just it was a nice antidote to unimaginative Hollywood stuff. ::)

Of course its in similar territory to Blairwitch, Cloverfield, and other 'mystery tape' films. But IMHO the Norwegian setting, the based on folklore background, and the adherence to folklore details make it a great little Northern European gem. It should do great outside Norway. The references to 'mystery tape' style films are very cheekily handled with a lot of dry humour as are the whole government conspiracy angles. 'mystery tape' films did exist prior to Blairwitch so its a little unfair to call anything in the genre a rip off, this is a better movie than Blairwitch IMHO.

Its not a gimmick its 'mystery tape' film ... thats a narrative device not a gimmick ....... didn't you say you loved it?? ...... so your saying you loved a gimmicky Blairwitch rip off ?!?!?

The only Norwegian movies that are worth watching are made by Tommy Wirkola  ;D

However even those movies are not recommended to non-scandinavians, as they wouldn't get the jokes based on cultural references. Besides there is no justice subbing actors like Stig Frode Henriksen, half of his humour is his funny northern dialect.

I guess my point is this recommendation thread is now aimed at scandinavians.
Here are Norwegian classics to recommend:
Død Snø (dead snow) - It's about Nazi Zombies, a splatter movie where people seem to lose their intestines easily, nuf said.
Kill Buljo - Parody on Kill Bill, very focused on cultural references and Lapps, I guess Swedes and Finns will get the jokes

If not loking for a comedy, then I can think of one decent war movie that they finally got more or less right:
Max Manus historians still disaproved some stuff, but close enough to a true story.

And then we have the Swedish movies which (not surprisingly) get higher budgets and many of them are really good:
Arn - Tempelriddaren Think of it as a swedish version of "Kingdom of heaven", this movie can be enjoyed fully by anyone I believe.
Flickan som lekte med elden Hmm.... Swedes make mainstream movies when I think about it...

Oh and Denmark has this dude called Lars von Trier that makes movies that.... well see this one:
Antichrist I think onion news made a video about him...
Beside that I remember an awesome Danish animation Terkel i knibe. Pure win.

Oh, the list could go on, but I got bored so signing off.

What can i say ....... i have complex taste in movies. I watched a lot of Ingmar Bergman when i was very young and even enjoyed some of them. i saw Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker when i was about 12 and it stuck in my head forever.
So i have always watch a lot of 'world' and 'art house' movies

Seen Dead Snow .... narrowly avoided spraying tea all over my keyboard and monitor a few times
liked it gory and very silly.

Kill Buljo sounds interesting ...... i'll look that one up. thanks.

Arn looks good ..... i just won't invite my m8 mahmoud round for that one  :P

Seen all the Stieg Larsson (Millennium) Movies great films.

Seen a few of Lars von Trier's movies 'the Idiots' and such, i like DaFoe so maybe check this Antichrist out.

Kind of surprised you didn't mention 'Låt den rätte komma' (Let the Right One In) I loved it. Didn't you like it or did you figure its had so much exposure, no need to mention it??

Slightly off the reservation since we are talking Nordlander movies.
But for those who have not seen or heard of it i strongly recommend 'Man Bits Dog' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103905/ which is a movie from Belguim. Both hilarious and outrageously violent.

I read the book. It was excellent and really memorable, so I was really afraid that the movie would ruin all that. I did that mistake by watching Lord of the rings after reading the book.

If you say that Låt den rätte komma is a very good movie, then I will take a chance and check it out.

Bro ..... seriously its a fuckin' masterpiece !!!!
I haven't read the book, but the movie is amazing 8.1 on Imdb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/
I just cannot recommend it enough, it completely transcends the horror, vamp movie genre.
Until Låt den rätte komma The Hunger and Near Dark where my all time top vamp movies, but Låt den rätte komma blows both out of the water ..... even though its not REALLY a vamp movie.

i agree "Låt den rätte komma" is a great movie.  the American remake looks like crap though.  by "The Hunger" are you referring to the David Bowie version?  if so i would say that's better than Låt den rätte komma".   "Near Dark" hmm not familiar with that.  i keep thinking of the game, Perfect Dark.   lol

just scoped out a trailer for Near Dark- that's pretty cheesy.  you would be better served watching "The Lost Boys".  Bram Stoker's "Dracula" still owns the vampire genre.

Yeah 'The Hunger' with Bowie in his best acting role ever ..... though prefer to think of it as a Scott bros movie, since they directed and produced it. Truly a great movie one of the top 3 vamp movies of all time, no doubt.
I'll give you a break on 'Near Dark' since you haven't seen it, so you don't know what your talking about ....... but it is an awesome vamp movie, where a lot of the southern trailer trash vamp ideas for true blood came from IMHO. It is very dark very gritty, very trailer trash, and not really sexy or alluring at all. Early work by director Kathryn Bigelow ( Point break, Hurt locker, recent oscar ). See it them come back and comment authoritatively.

'Lost boys' is teen cheese i'd rather see the original 'Buffy the vampire slayer' (which is a great laugh).

Coppolas 'Bram Stokers Dracula' is good features some of the nicest form cut/transitions i have ever seen in a movie, easily best Dracula movie ever. But its crippled by Keanu Reeves appallingly bad Brit accent, and Coppola letting Anthony Hopkins ham it up like its pantomime season.

Oh yeah USA remake of 'Låt den rätte komma' (Let the Right One In) isn't exactly crap but it is SO exactly like the Swedish but just trimmed down a bit and with Americans speaking English. It brings nothing new to the table and all the good things about it are taken photocopy style from the original ...... i was kind of incensed that it has had such good reviews on Imdb not that it doesn't deserve them, but it was obvious no one commenting had seen the original. It doesn't just ride on the shoulders of 'Låt den rätte komma' it stands on its head.
