Seeding protected torrent

<< < (3/3)

Freedom Kira:
So why's this such a big deal? The torrents are (edit: usually) protected only for 24 hours following the torrent's acceptance. During this time, the main leechers are not allowed access to the torrent, in order to get the files more efficiently to people who are sure to seed.

If you're so dead-set on seeding a new torrent, just wait a day. Come back tomorrow and start seeding. A day is really not that long. You're also guaranteed several times more leechers than you would be during the protected period anyway, not to mention that you'll have to seed for several weeks/months/years to obtain any decent ratio.

At the above point, only allowing seeding on everything the user is running is easy. Only allowing it on one torrent, and allowing downloading on other torrents, is difficult.

While you would think so (as the warning system does just that), I believe that we cannot do this currently.  So, if my understanding of the tracker is correct (which it may not be, as I don't touch that part of the site), it is the way it is for technical, rather than philosophical, reasons.

The time varies on the size of the torrent.

Thank you Xiong, that suffices as a reason for me.

IIRC, Jaru had tried a tracker upgrade that included such features (selective access enabling/disabling depending on user criteria), but decided not to go through with it. Again, if memory serves me correctly, this was because said tracker was too slow and we decided to stick with the old one instead.

Freedom Kira:
^ That's an interesting tidbit of info. Assuming it is true, if the server's hardware was upgraded, do you think it'd be possible?
