Seeding question...

Seeing as how all the other help sites on the net aren't that simple to understand, I was hoping someone on this site (which is beyond awesome) could give me a seeding 101 lesson. I use uTorrent, and after a download of mine finishes, it says 'seeding', but I don't exactly know how long you should leave it seeding, or how it even works, for that matter. Will it notify me once it has seeded a certain amount? Just so that I can seed after a download from this site has finished for me, I was hoping someone could tell me the basics. All I see on uTorrent when it's seeding is a bunch of numbers, and I get all confuzzled. =/

Here's the basics.

In short you keep seeding until you're satisfied with
the Uploaded and/or Ratio for the specific torrents.
It may take a long time to get anything uploaded
if it's not a popular torrent so there's no way to tell
how long you need to seed.
