as for the old WoW Dev teams that seem missing, they are now stationed in US branch working on a "secret project" that blizzard is guarding with the heaviest importance.

The ones who developed WoW are currently working on Project Titan, which is the new MMO Blizzard is planning to release in 2013 or 2014 (after another expansion of WoW, SC2 and first expansion of D3).
As for closed world MMOs, I agree. That's not even an MMO to me. I've played many MMOs and anything with "instance" to another place (not continent) is stupid and specifically when they force you to go in the direction they want you to go to.
Waiting on an answer from a RIFT player.

Rift is basically Wow version 2. The quest hubs and rift events are all done in the world. The dungeons and raid events (non rift raids) are all instanced. I like the game but it feels to much like Wow that im getting bored of it already. I have one character almost max level and another thats like 20. The soul system seemed like it could be fun but once I started playing and really getting into the game I started to hate it. There is no class diversity really. You can have 4 different soul specs. You can pick 3 souls in each spec. You can learn every soul. What this means to people that dont play is basically this. You choose cleric. For cleric there are 8 souls "classes" and 1 for pvp. Basically you choose 3 and then you spend your points in those 3. Basically you get skills by putting the ones in the soul you want. It looks like a talent system from Wow. In here you can do quests to get souls you dont start with. Which means by level 50 you can have 4 different soul specs, think of it like changing your talents in wow. So you can basically pick anything you want. There is no delay so you can switch whenever you feel like it. Also they made it so you dont even have to collect different gear sets. I mean a cleric can be caster dps, melee dps, a tank or a healer and it will all use the exact same gear. The only thing you really change is weapon. A tank of course would use a 1 hand a shield. Everyone else pretty much uses a 2 hand because it has better stats. I thought it seemed like a good idea but after playing for awhile I realized I really dont like it. None of the classes feel unique because you can do anything a cleric can do whever you want. I like the feel of having a class that fits into one solid roll and then poeple get know for playing that role. Not having one guy that can tank / dps / heal all as one character. Also the other big turn off for me which was why I got tired of Wow in the first place is that all the upgrades in this game are based on gear. Once you max level all you do is grind for gear through instances / Raids just like Wow. I like raiding and stuff but that isnt enough to keep me from being bored. I mean I used to log into Wow only when i was raiding then back off again because nothing else mattered. I mean what was the point of doing heroics etc when they gave nothing I needed. Im not max level in rift yet but I can already see the problems with it being the exact same as there is no reason to play at max level other than improving gear which bores me after awhile.

which means I don't need to quit wow just yet :)

Sounds like it. I'll wait for D3 and Project Titan.

I played in a couple betas. Its a decent game all in all.Seemed very polished,i dug the world
and story(of what i saw anyway)
My problem is its too much like every other mmo out currently.Take Warhammer public quests
and feel, add wows achievements,dungeons/raids and pvp design and you have Rift.
Ive come to realize im just really bored with the current state of MMOs.
I have 3 on my radar if they fail to deliver then i doubt ill ever play another one, barring my occaisonal
1 month stint in wow.(where i check out new content, enjoy it,get bored and quit again)
The 3 im looking into are
The Secret World-Its kinda an urban fantasy/horror type game. Its supposed to be skill based and
from what ive read the setting looks awesome.
SWTOR-Its bioware,Its Star Wars what more do i really need?
Guild Wars 2-Never played the first one but the trailers ive seen and the hype around how they
wanted to revolutionize MMOs has me curious.
Im not holding my breath for any of those 3 to be the perfect game, but im willing to least give them
a second glance.
