How would YOU have ended Lord of the Rings?

Guys guys GUYS!
Leave Lovecraft out of this thread please.

Sabinlerose:
I like to think that the Shanara series is everything Lord of the Rings could and should have been.

Undetz,
(click to show/hide)Just… stop it.  This is what offended me and why I told you to go to hell:

You wanna disagree with my opinion, fine, go nuts, I don’t care, but don’t accuse me of not knowing something about the subject simply because I arrive at different conclusion than you do.  Look around, you’ll find that my opinions on Lovecraft are not exactly unique.  Criticisms of his writing were much harsher during his lifetime.  I understand full well why Lovecraft wrote the way he did.  I don’t need you to regurgitate to me stuff I figured out on my own 20 years ago.

And you’re still missing my point.  When I say that his writing is flawed from a technical perspective, I’m talking about slicing and dicing the story down into its ‘component’ elements.  I am NOT talking about the stories as a whole.  Have you ever heard the idea that something can be greater than the sum of its parts?  That’s what I’m referring to.  Have you ever studied the pieces and parts of a story to analyze what a writer does right, or what they do wrong?  You’re saying, “His stories are great because he does X, Y, and Z.”  I’m saying, “Yeah, that’s right, but individually, X is bad, Y is bad, and Z is bad.  Taken together, X, Y, and Z work fine.”  If you still don’t get it, then I don’t know what else to tell you.  If you understand but still want to disagree, OK, fine, doesn’t bother me any.

--- Quote from: undetz on March 04, 2011, 03:07:26 PM ---There's really no need for you to resort to personal remarks like that, as you may note I have refrained from using them, and did in fact not use any in my first post on this topic either. I really wish you'll mend your ways and that we can keep this civil.

If you’ll refrain from being condescending you’ll discover that I’m pretty easy to get along with.

To everyone else, sorry the thread got derailed.  I don’t intend to continue the current discussion.

If by crappy you mean enjoyable characters, plots that make sense, and an overarching story that makes sense...

Then yes you are correct.
