Need a good DnD-esque CRPG
« on: March 03, 2011, 12:12:54 AM »
With all this talk about Dragonage II, I want a new RPG. Not some run around and hack shit up (like in the Witcher), but something like Neverwinter Nights. I know I can't get the RP found in DnD from any other source, but surely I can get the rest.

[edit] Please note that I am not looking for a PnP RPG.

Step 1. Open Wordpad.
Step 2. The only limit is your imagination!

I want a game. I don't want to write a novel (well, actually I do, but that's different). Anyway, I want a game.

Step 1. Open Wordpad.
Step 2. The only limit is your imagination!

Step 3. Find a game master / find players because you are a GM yourself.
Step 4. Find dice.

I believe everything else can be improvised, but you need more than one player in pen and paper in a role play.

nstgc: most good RPG are old games. If you don't mind the graphics, try Arcanum or Baldurs Gate.

I have Baldur's Gate II installed, but it doesn't run properly and the interface pisses me off (accessing spells is annoying). I bought SpellForce back in December, but it turned out to be a weak fusion of RTS and RPG (as opposed to strong).

My problem with PnP is that people are unreliable. Last time I played an PnP RPG One guy came and went and it was a real mess. The next time everyone was smoking in a place with no breeze. I'm quite asthmatic and so being in a cloud of smoke is a real problem.

I may try Arcanum. I'd prefer new graphics, but a good game is better.

I believe you can find a DnD .pdf book on the net SOMEWHERE. Might be 3.5 or 4... (go with 3.5, it's better) but the rules to play are not hard and it's actually kinda fun with a bunch of nerds.

Tabletop FTW.

[edit} I also own the players hand book equivalent for Pathfinder.

I just started playing A Farewell to Dragons. Just started this morning, in fact. Seems interesting so far.

Divinity II was fun, but short (and frustrating at times).

I like 4e way better than 3.5e (or Pathfinder). The classes have better balance at all levels (as opposed to only being sort-of balanced between levels 8 and 12), it's easier to DM, and almost every complaint I've heard against 4e amounts to "they changed it, now it sucks" or "Craft(basket weaving) and Profession(under water basket weaver) are integral to my character! 4e doesn't have those [worthless] skills, so it sucks" (rather than just saying "hey, my character can weave baskets while under water").

Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 were a little overlooked due to NWN.  So check them out if you haven't.

(and Pathfinder is fun! ^_^)

Planescape: Torment was the best one of all.

They were overlooked for a good reason. There is a nice comparison that says: Icewind Dale for DnD games was the same as Fallout Tactics was for Fallout games.

Basically Icewind dale is a squad based tactical rpg with minimal story and role-play elements. Icewind Dale games weren't overlooked, it's just that the sub-genre was different and thus didn't aim for the same audience. But hey! If you fancy the idea of starting a game with 6 (iirc) characters and hack and slash in a tactical way using those members' abilities and skills to cover each other, then you would definitely love Icewind Dales games.

I just started playing A Farewell to Dragons. Just started this morning, in fact. Seems interesting so far.

Does it have a lot of bugs like all the other games made by 1C? I mean that is probably what kills their games right at the release on the international market.

Haven't seen any so far, but I only managed to play for an hour while we were pulling out of Sepengar.

My problem with Plane Scape and IWD is that they use the same engine as BG. Chances are they won't run properly on my computer (FYI: Alpha Centuari refuses to play on my computer). I get a bunch of black lines forming a grid. Its hideous. I also don't like the interface (as mentioned before). I have to go into a sub menu to get to my spells, and then I have to remember which symbol is which spell (they all look the same to me). I have ID II somewhere. I liked it. I'd be playing more for the tactical RPG game play then the RPing. No computer game can do good job at RP. At best it'll be adequate with a good linear (even if they claim non-linear) plot. The best I've seen in a game, as far as I can recall at least, was NWN 2: MotB.

I'll look at gameplay videos for A Farewell to Dragon and Divinity, but chances are I'll wait until its gone down to at least 15 dollars. I don't want to price hunt now. I paid $15 for dragon age, and 17 for Mass Effect and ME2 as a bundle. I wait for games to be cheap.

I own King's Bounty, a 1C game, and its pretty good. Runs well on my computer, and I haven't noticed any bugs.
