Full Metal Panic!
« on: March 18, 2011, 08:10:26 PM »
So I started watching FMP recently, and upon finishing the first season, I was confused at to which was the followup. I misunderstood ANN at first and thought that "The Second Raid" was the direct sequel, only to find out today that "Fumoffu" supposedly comes before TSR. Upon starting TSR I didn't see anything out of place, so I kept watching until episode 6.

Given that I'm halfway through TSR, is there anything in Fumoffu that warrants me to stop watching TSR and backtrack to Fumoffu first? Would Fumoffu feel entirely out of place if I watched it after TSR?

The series is awesome, and after ep 6 of TSR I REALLY want to see what happens next...!

(Oh yeah, I searched the forums and didn't find a dedicated FMP thread to revive, which I found surprising. So here's an FMP discussion thread! :P)

FMP is pretty old.

Fumoffu has nothing to do with either FMP or TSR. It's just comic relief. Some say because FMP lacked that but was always hinted at. *shrugs* You won't miss anything or not understand when first watching TSR or Fumoffu.

Awesome, thanks newy!

Fumoffu will be interesting when I get to it then, I find my favorite bits of the series are the funny bits(though the serious bits and the action are also quite good).

From what i've heard, Fumoffu has nothing to do with the first or second season, but it falls in between seasons. If that makes a difference, go with that.

basically, fumoffu are scenes mainly in the school, which appears in between the main stories in the manga.
But apparently it doesn't really match the story (not advancing storyline) and it's mainly for comedy reasons.
That's why they decided to make it to a separate season just because it's funny as ****....

I personally would suggest to watch fumoffu before finishing TSR.. but that's just a personal opinion.
after TSR is also fine because then you feel like the ending is finished...

whereas the manga has A LOT more than what the anime provides sadly...
like afterward testarossa got betrayed by every member of the ship and was kidnapped blablabla..
but it isn't in the anime series at all. Figured it'd be interesting if they made season 4 but guess not.

Nice, now you can get to experience waiting for a continuation that'll probably never come.

Sigma is great though, read that when you're finished with Second Raid. ;)

It's basically side of life, showing you what Chidori and Sagara's side of life and how they were communicating with other members. It does involve comedy and hell yes it's one of my damn long time favorites. Big fan of Full Metal Panic! series.

I think Fumoffu is best in the middle, between the two super serious seasons.  That way it feels more like a comedic interlude rather than a tacked on OVA.

Speaking of Full Metal Panic, I'm suprised no one has mentioned yet that they actually finished the light novels.  If someone expresses interest, we may have a good amount of content for a new series or two.

So I finished TSR, and it seemed like a good place to end it (+ epic ending too!)

And I started Fumoffu. SO. HILARIOUS! I love it. Also glad I'm watching it last, because the mood is completely different from TSR, and I'm sure it would have made me enjoy TSR less then I did.

Guess I'll have to read the rest of the series, it's probably too old to expect a new series by now. (isn't the usual rule like 2 years tops to a sequel or it's not happening?)

Not always. Look at Slayers Revolution -- it came out 11 years after the previous TV series, or 7 years after the last of the movies and OVAs.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Take Level E. A show from 2011. The original (manga) is from 1995/7.

Yes, but horrible typesetting.  I'm hoping I can get someone to teach me proper typesetting (perhaps I'll ask Kureshii...) so I can compile it.

Fumoffu is wonderful...i watch it over and over and never get tired of it..Ditto the rest of FMP, one of the best series yet..and I have heard there is a sequel..ie fourth season planned but it will take a while to come out. Yes the light novels are finished and translated. They are great as well if you want the story but I am waiting for the anime. The series is a classic and will never get "old" even tho the animation art style is a bit older than many..but it is still very well done with a full range of effects and locations and impact.

Impact really for this series is among the best of any anime series yet. It had wonderful characters who draw you into the story and keep you engaged and caring what happens. And the full range of subjects is addressed: action, suspense, romance, comedy, slice of life even some ecchi and more. In short, it is a real life series and one that shows great maturity and depth on the part of Anime Evolution. I envy you seeing it all for the first time.

It is best to watch Fumoffu between the First Raid and the Second Raid..but really it is ok to watch it after TSR if you want ..or even during as a break in the intensity.

All the main characters have ordeals in the follow up story but they all surmount their challenges in wonderful ways...tho as with any anime any character is 'at risk" as anime writers are much tougher on their characters than many western fiction writers. :)  Glad you found FMP..enjoy it all.

Link or it's just another rumour.

Actually I prefer this... relatively realistic artstyle (though I don't count FMP to my "realistic artstyle" shows). Nowadays' shows are getting uglier and uglier, be it for the lolicons, breast fetishist or pantyshots. I miss shows drawn like FMP, Monster, Yakushiji Ryoko, or to be relatively recent, Legend of Legendary Heroes or Kara no Kyoukai...

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Theres going to be a "major announcement" regarding FMP this month.

Probably won't be the case but lets hope it's a new animated season...plenty of content left to animate still.

Back when I first picked up FMP which was like 5  years ago I was eager to find out whether there would be a third season involving Tessa's  brother and his organization and if I remember correctly some dude from Kyoto Animations said they would like to make another season but would prefer to wait and let the novel run its course. Of course in Japan's anime world statement like this mean nothing but there should be enough material for another season.

FMP is still one of my all time favorite anime.
