Finished the show in a single half of a day this week, simply fabulous. It definitively slid itself somewhere in my top tear-jerking-heavy-but-so-good-it's-a-must-see animes. (Noein, Bokura Ga Ita, Clannad, Cross Game, etc... Angel Beats's ending owned me with ease.

This is a must-watch.

+1 I just finished it tonight with a friend and my cousin thats visiting. Ive been easing my cousin into anime a bit lately. We all thought it was really friggin good. Im actually thinking when UTW releases a batch with some fixes i may rewatch it with my mother, she loves tear jerker dramas like this.

Im gonna be honest. I got a bit choked up on the last episode. We usually make some jokes or chat a bit during a show but no one said a word on the last episode. Really touching ending. Popo... wow, that surprised the hell outa me. I loved the show, but im not not sure if the ending was totally satisfying.l I gotta think about it a bit and read through the last few pages of the thread. I"ll post some more of my thoughts on it later, but the initial impression is: This was a really well done show. From the characters, to the drama, to the animation. It really stood the hell out for me

yeesh watched way too much anime today. Finished that up and blew through all 11 epps of Eden of the East in prep of finally getting around to the movies

I just have to ask, for someone who loves slice of life/romance animes... how does this compare? (Scale of 1-10... 10 being Clannad and/or similar romance heavy hitters)

I d/led this along side Aria (the crappy version of Toradora! with guns!) and watched Aria instead of this. Big mistake is what it's looking like... but at least I can watch the entirety of the show uninterrupted.

it's more complicated than a normal slice of life. it's quite a bit deeper than that. and i wouldn't really call it a romance either. it is ultimately more about dealing with tragedy and loss and learning to live in the absence of something important.

the pairings are only vaguely implied at the end. for all the circling, it doesn't end up being the main point of the finale. but it shows some "possibilities"

I finished this show over the weekend, and I too really loved it. The artwork was well done - not a lot of music, which for me was fine for the telling of this story and definitely not too many episodes (I don't think the story would adapt well to lengths greater then (max) 12 episodes, so for me 11 was just fine)

I had read a review elsewhere that complained about the lack of backstory on Menma (Meiko) and that they had little feeling for the character (I read the review after watching the series) and that she needed more to feel for her - I personally don't fully agree with that reviewers interpretation - yes, very little backstory was provided (although there were sprinklings through the series that provided enough for her character) and although I didn't have strong feelings toward Menma (Meiko) - I didn't feel that the strongest emotions of the viewer were to be evoked by or for her - to me she provided a catalyst for the emotional roller coaster that this series was rather then a character that we needed to know absolutely everything about and emotionally bond with.  Her existence and memory was what drove these 5 friends to confront each other and their bottled up emotions over the loss they experienced many years earlier.

Don't get me wrong - she's important to the story, but I felt much more for the 5 remaining friends and their emotions toward each other and themselves.  To me it's like looking in on any group of friends that has lost one - you as an outside viewer wouldn't know much about that person who is gone, but you would learn bits and pieces as the effect of that loss became evident. 

I also think people who have lost family and/or friends might look at this show differently as they confront their own emotions - things unsaid, the desire to be alone, the desire to act out, etc. - each of which one could argue that the different characters to at least some degree represented.
 

All in all, I think it was a wonderful short series that concludes well and for me is up there with series like Clannad and Air - albiet with a lot more emotions in a smaller block of episodes

Damn that was one hell of an emotional show. I cried at every single episode and almost the whole of the last one. If this isn't slice of life I don't know what is. Because, The way they have captured emotions was perfect.
