Yeah, this thread made me realize most people probably only notice the girl in my avatar. It is part of what sparked my interest in this thread.
The other part is me finding it annoying when I sometimes assume that forum members are of the same gender as their avatar. Especially when this is not the case.
After putting both parts together, I came to a startling conclusion...

Currently my av is the same as my gender, but I'll probably change it once I get bored with it. Right now, I'm pretty proud of it though, since I'd never bothered to make an av before. It took me a while to figure out how to make it

Usually I tend to use a guy, but I used to pick girls for ava too. My favourite were Gally (aka Alita from Gunnm / Battle Angel), Konata (Lucky Star) and Miu (Ichigo Mashimaro, yes I might be a lolicon -_-). :')

I am a dude and I keep female avis. I do this because I have to see my own avi on a regular basis so I prefer it to be something I like to look at. I don;t like to look at dudes.

That is the BEST explanation I have heard for that! I will change my ava to a girl now.
