NANA manga

Discuss which scanlators did the best job and are available. The long hiatus status warrants an incomplete upload of all 84 chapters (iirc). Of course a continuation would be great (at least that's what I'm wishing for :P)

+1, peeps.  It would be fantastic to have the graphic novels here.

Anybody who gots anything Nana that isn't up here yet, please feel free to offer; it will be most welcomed by myself and many others.

Upgrades &/or additions of artbooks welcome & requested too.  The existing NANA Artbooks are wonderful, but the books are inconsistent in quality and some of it is in fairly anemic resolution.

The music collection remains incomplete ...

If a better copy of the anime is out there ...

The live-action movies are worthy of higher quality treatment ...

Thank you!   :)

Thank you for requesting this newy! There has been quite some confusion with regards to how many chapters have actually been published:

According to MangaUpdates, 84 chapters have been published.
According to Wiki, Vol. 20 ends at Chap. 77. No chapter listing is available for Vol. 21.
According to a member owning all VIZ volumes, Vol. 21 ends at Chap. 79.

So if Vol. 20 did end at Chap. 77 as Wiki says, it's weird that Vol. 21 would end in just Chap. 79, but then again, that's the VIZ volumes we're talking about. I tried following the ISBN for Vols. 20 & 21, but I couldn't conclusively clarify which chapters are in which volumes. It's driving me nuts!

With regards to the scanlation groups, there have been many groups with TAKOYAKIs doing the most releases and Celestial-Delinquent doing the final chapters; lovenana4ever and Sugar Oasis also did a fair number of releases, so we might be going with a mix of those 4 groups.

I found a torrent from Demonoid containing Chaps 1-74 but I'm not sure which groups they're from since the uploader RAR'd everything to a single archive. MangaTraders has it until Chap. 84. I'll be downloading everything from both sources and compiling the best quality and renaming things to a uniform naming convention (with 4 different groups, I bet that would be a mess). I believe BBT discourages renaming and prefers the volumes/chapters untouched, but I wouldn't be able to offer anything anyway. Hopefully, these sources helped.

mangaupdates only list scanlated chapters. They disregard (to my knowledge) the activity in the States. They just mention if the title is licensed. I'm pretty sure 84 Japanese (thus scanlated) chapters exist.

Good news! I found MU links for Vols. 1-18 posted by the scanlation group lovenana4ever themselves. Does BBT allow posting of DDL links for torrent offer's sake?

Yeah, sure. I've personally done it before, and seeing as newy hasn't sent me on "vacation" yet... ;D

Looking at mangaupdates, there's not much overlap of groups. The only notable one is TAKOYAKIs and lovenana4ever in the middle chapters.

The real issue is BBT's fetish for original files.

If it's alright with BBT, I can grab the files kathy025 linked (not original files) and grab the rest from mangatraders, then repackage everything for consistency.

I grabbed everything available in the MU links above.  Confirmed: a couple are expired.

The naming is a bit of a mess.  Sometimes things are in subdirectories, sometimes not.  There are *.zip collections within *.zip files.  Many individual images have names such as "nana_v06_c18_p000 copy.jpg" and a number of Thumbs.db files are present.

So, yeah, re-naming and proper categorization will be necessary.

There is quite some variation in quality.  Some scans are 300x300 dpi, others 100x100 or 360x360.  Most images display as ~750 x 1200 pixels, though there is variation down to ~680x1100.

Also, a couple of files are corrupted.  I'll post a full report later tonight when I have time, if nobody beats me to it.

- converted .jpg to .png (but never .png to .jpg) for file format consistency in selected chapters
That was not necessary.

It's only for a few files though and it's to .png which should keep quality intact. If anyone else wants to repack then it's fine. I originally intended it to be for my own archiving purposes anyway so I could be having small personal preferences with it. :)

Heh!  :D

Nice work!  I don't have the time I need right now to take on a project, unfortunately.  If there is some way I can support, I'll certainly jump on any suggestions or needs that crop up.

I did unpack all the copies I DL'd from the MU links, a total of about 750 MB.

In vol 2 I got a message on corrupt file:

 - Nana-v02p056.png

Which is missing about the bottom 20% of the image.

In vol 12 the *.zip is listed as corrupt, although I don't think it is since it unpacks nicely (lv me my 7-zip! ;) ).  The Nana_v12_c43.zip archive-within-archive gives a corrupt message for file

 - Nana_v12_c43_067.jp g

which is weirdly cropped compared to everything else, even though the image appears complete.

Volume 16 was marked as HQ .. and if it meant high-quality, it was hard to see the difference.  Seemed some of the details were better, better gray scale, but still 100 DPI resolution and ~870x1200 display resolution.

V's 17 & 18 marked as MQ, which I assume is medium quality ... can't tell the difference from the other volumes 1-15.  Still 100 dpi, but ~800x1200 display resolution.

So if anyone runs across anything that beats those, it would be nice.  From my quick run-through tonight, there is a LOT of lost detail in these scans.  Many places near-completely blacked out where there should be gray scale.  Readable enough, and some of the color scans sprinkled throughout look like they were given some extra loving care over the B&W pages.

My main complaint is that my eyes aren't so perfect anymore.  On my 22" 1920x1080 monitor, some parts were challenging to read where the typeset was tiny & thin, as well as other detail loss in the art.  If I were to scan these myself, I'd want to go 300 dpi all the way and a target display resolution of (at least) ~1200 x 1800 to improve readability and graphics quality for re-use in wallpapers & such.

If I were to organize this for a torrent, I'd suggest it download into a folder something like .\NANA_the_manga_[incomplete]\ and then each volume be its own *.zip archive, something like NANA_manga_v01.zip, etc., with each of those unpacking to the chapters .\NANA_v07_c23\ or .\NANA_v16_Nobu's_Story\ and such.  Perfectly happy with the filenames like Nana_v16_c60_137.jp g & Nana_v16_Nobu_229.p ng and such the way they are.  Fortunately, NANA is such a short name, the triple redundancy isn't nearly as annoying as a title with 7 words and 42 characters in it ...

I don't really have much else to add.  Well, except thanks for the work and enthusiasm, Kathy!  :)  I'm not going to search up & DL the other chapters.  I'll wait for them to be upped (as MU links or as a torrent)... unless ... there is actual work I can do to support the project.  Either ask here (I'll watch this topic for a while) or PM me directly, anybody.

I read through quite a bit of the later chapters as I spot-checked and am getting pretty excited to get all that remains of what's available.  Really caught on fire over Nana again and am stoked to review everything I've got as soon as I've got time.

@datora:
Vol. 2 and Vol. 12 unpacked nicely for me with WinRAR 4.0. I suggest a re-dl mate since MU sometimes causes corruption during the dl process. But for you, I got the images here:

(click to show/hide)

Unfortunately we can't do anything about Vols. 16-18 as that's an issue from the scanlators. I guess it's best if we just ignore the MQ/HQ because with these different groups, there are different standards/preferences among them rather than an objective description of quality.

The colored pages I believe were part of the "wallpaper making contest" they had back then. One of the credit pages from TAKOYAKIs asked readers to vote.

Archives within archives have always irked me, but that's a preference that comes across individuals.

No prob datora! Nevertheless, I will continue repacking the volumes in my own fashion. Should there be any interest, reply or PM. :)

  • *Alternate release for Chapter 84 by Sinuse Scans. Both Celestial-Delinquent and Eternal Darkness had a bad habit of putting their group name on every page.

NANA went on an indefinite hiatus in 2009 due to Ai Yazawa's illness. She was released from hospital care in April 2010. However, continuation of the series is currently unknown.

Dat's so beautiful I wanna cry!  8)  Arigatou!!

My life situation is not stable enough for me to take on the responsibility of making & maintaining the offer.  I will collect everything in the repack and will hold it sacred.  Meaning, I'm an emergency back-up archive for it, and if/when this is offered here I will be happy to help Initial Seed it and then continue to seed whenever I notice any anemia in the seed pool.

I'll trust your judgment on selecting the best of what's available.  Nice, targeted use of OCD there!  ;)  Been known to do that myself more than a few times ...

Don't know if you're making those *.pdf files or what ... if you ever need/want to create *.pdf, one of the best, free ways I've run across is to use Open Office Writer (the open source alternative to MS Word).  You can create documents and export as *.pdf, and you can open *.htm/*.html in Writer, edit it (such as inserting images, change formatting, etc), then export as *.pdf.  Does really nice work, well optimized with several nice tools to tweak the export.

[ EDIT:  I was able to DL Vol. 01 - 11 and all the individual chapters 78 - 84 (540 MB total).  Everything unpacked beautifully & I saw no obvious mistakes; I'll be reading through everything shortly and will offer any QC commentary I feel necessary.  I was a university lecturer for a few years, and also did quite a bit of technical writing in IT and science research ... so my proof-reading skillz are one small contribution I can make here.  They're pretty much OCD level.  ;)

However, the Vol. 12 link: Dieser Link ist verfükt.  Tried it several times over an hour and no joy. (kathy re-upped & it works; I gots it plus Vol. 13 now  :D )  *.pdf of v12 glossary was no problem (also updated w/ ver. 2). ]
