Steel Panthers Series, but you'll probably need DOSbox (haven't played em in a while). The Ultimate Risk game from Hasbro Interactive (don't confuse it with the other Risk game out from another company). It's not a WWII-based game but it is a fun strategy game.

Also the Axis and Allies game (the most recent one) is fun.
There's nothing here, because I'm too lazy to put something here.

Get an open source game called "Triple A".  Adaptation of the board game.  Google it, i love it, play vs cpu.

Hearts of Iron III is a good TBS of WWII on a global scale, greatest TBS for WWII I've played.

Are you a fellow WWII fan?

For RTS: These would be considered more tactical than strategical but you weren't very precise in what you wanted.
Company of Heros
Close Combat
Commandos
Red Alert 1 (later gets more modern theme)

More strategical:
Ruse
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Supreme Commander (skip 2) is pretty nice. Total Annihilation is also good, both have the same resource/construction system.

Since you wanted strategy games the titles by Paradox such as Europa Universalis III, Hearts of Iron III and Victoria II would be a perfect fit. Do get the addons if you get a title, they make the experience much better.

Total War series is also nice with a mix between Tactics in battle and strategy for overall plan.

SINS of a Solar Empire!

Not World War II at all, but still awesome. Make sure to pick up SINS Trinity, it's the main game + the expansions.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

That genre is so milked, I am surprised anyone is still interested in it.

Have you heard about rebellion? It will be a stand alone expansion, featuring titan class ships, can't wait for that  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Why do people like sins? Any time we played that multiplayer it ended up with roughly equal team splits and then, well then it was tied due to defenders advantage. Did they fix that in the expansions? Or was that just due to maps favouring defending since the attack path and defence path was roughly as long with like 3 possible attack locations?

Eh, are you serious?

First of all you talk as if there is only one map I believe there are over 60 pre-made ones and infinite nimber with the random map generator.
Second of all if your defence is enough to to keep your empire safe, then the attacker is doing something wrong. Last time I played agains someone who turtled, I just bomb his best planets with around... 8 fucking novalith cannons. I believe I won the game because he was so frustrated, that he quit  ;D

My point is, don't blame the game, blame the player.

In an even split both sides can use the novalith canon, continuing the tie since you are both ruined. At least that was my experience, after 2h of tie we just quit. Second time it happened we never played it again.

Then you failed to utilize a better tactic, I don't understand how you can even have a tie, if your assault succeeds, then you can push the enemy over many planets before he entrenches another planet, if your assault fails, he will counter-attack you and fuck you up.

It is no different from other RTS games, technically you can have a tie of even forces in everything from command and conquer games to age of empires series.

I still don't see how this is a problem of a gameplay mechanic, and not a problem of you and your opponent using identical strategies.

Probably due to the maps we played on (was a while ago so can't recall fully). There is also the fact that the defence in Sins is stronger than it is in the C&C games (from what I recall). You can't have that as easily in age of empires due to resource starvation. Running out of resources means you can't keep a tie going.

Also, you do not attack if you aren't certain you will win. You harass (which there wasn't any real way to do due to limited chokes) and no dedicated units or mass more. Attacking and losing means you lose the game, thus you don't attack in a game with defenders advantage and a maximum amount of food.

It can of course play out as most RTT games where one takes the lead early on and just wins. I just feel this game has a higher than normal chance for a tie situation.

On topic: I also believe he said "offline" game, I assume that he will exclude multiplayer with other people.

Off topic:
I don't see how defences are that overpowered in Sins. You have usually several paths to the enemy, so he either has to split up forces or have weak defence in one of the paths. As Vasari you pretty much ignore defences because after one shot from Kostura cannon, all structures around the planet are disabled for a short duration while it also opens a phase gate so that your forces can travel from any planet. Very fun to rape someone's homeworld and bypassing all defences. As Advent you just build only carriers and overwhelm an enemy with literally thousands of drones. It is doable, and even more so when you play on a random map and fight constantly over juicy planets.

Also did you play with entrenchment and diplomacy expansions? they did some balancing there.

Vanilla. The problem might have been in playing team games. Which means each person fortifies one route and the armies move around to keep up with the enemy armies.

Also, in terms of world war II...

Men of War - (series)

Excellent realtime strategy, mostly about the eastern front, missions from 1941-1945.

Theatre of War - (series)

Amazing series, campaigns from all periods of the war.

Kursk 1943 is my favourite, the German Campaign is excellent.

Company of Heroes

One of the more popular RTS in recent times, great game.  Not as realistic, but good CPU to play against.
