Need Advice on Getting a New Phone
« on: April 07, 2011, 02:58:25 AM »
I am about to get a free phone. I have six options, but unfortunately, I don't know anything about phones. Which of the following would you pick and why?

Samsung Strive
LG VU Plus
Pantech Impact
LG Neon II
Pantech Pursuit
Samsung Solstice II

I am not interested in any other phones not listed, so please don't recommend or post links to phones not listed here.

Personally, I am a fan of Samsung but I don't know anything about those devices, sorry.

I will put in a vote for Samsung simply cuz I have always had good experiences with them and I also currently own a Samsung device (Captivate)

As someone who sells this stuff I'd pick the Vu out of what you are looking at bur personally if you can save up some cash get an iPhone or Android phone. You will be happy you did. I didn't see why you would want such a phone till I got mine. And now I absolutely love it

Samsung is alright, Solsitce II looks the best.

Honestly though, AT&T? Really? And super crappy phones? Not an Android amongst them?

You see, some of us normal people need a phone to make actual phone calls. Why would I need a "smart phone" that includes a bunch of stuff I don't need, when I can have a simple cell phone that sends text messages and can make a phone call.

With this development, soon people will forget that cell phones are meant to be used as phones.

Also, I wouldn't pick any of those phones, hate the layout on Samsung. My choice has always been Nokia, because they are just so damned robust. The one I have now is about 5 years old and it's still kicking.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I'm not a huge fan of the N series nokia.

Seriously though, after having a smart phone for a bit now, I don't really think they're that super amazing...

samsung strive. I wouldn't go with LG because it is well known they have bad batteries. Now i never heard about pantech.

I own an LG phone and it's nice. The battery lasts me 7 days without needing a charge. So that kind of shoots down your battery theory.

For the advice now. After reading and watching a hand full of review for the phones listed above I can say:

If you want a messaging phone or a phone just for making calls go with the LG Neon. It's reliable. The slide out QWERTY keyboard is spacious. A lot of room between keys in other words. All around it's decent. It has just about everything a standard phone has these days. The camera is just okay (Idk if you take photos or not you didn't specify.) It also has internet and that's about the key features for that.

Now if you want something to browse the web on I would suggest the LG Vu. It has Apple TV on it. Which streams live TV to your device which is cool. The micro SD is just behind the battery. Numbers on the virtual dial pad are big and easy to press. The virtual QWERTY keyboard is pretty nice. It could be a problem if you have huge fingers though. Though you would be able yo use the virtual dial pad to send messages if you wanted. It also has a FULL HTML browser. Which is AWESOME. Haha.

Otherwise for me in third would be the Samsung Strive. I'm not gonna go into detail about this phone because... I didn't find it very appealing. But that's my opinion along with the rest of said advice given to you from me.

That is my advice for you. If you have any questions about anything then let me know. I'll be happy to do more research for you.

Hope you have a good day/night.

And they do make actual phone calls. They also let you browse the internet. And they're no bigger than a regular phone, nor are they more expensive (for the "basic" smartphones at least, mine was included in my contract).

So why not get more for the same price?

I got my iPhone 3GS for ~ 50 bucks recently (contract deal), and I would say it was easily worth every penny. Normally I would have to carry around three devices do what it does (and it does it better). At first, I was one of those "who needs a phone to do anything except place calls" (quite literally I didn't even text) people, but I saw the light. It's so useful that it's pretty much impossible to go back.

I think you should have that deal, too, since I'm using AT&T.

Out of those you listed, though, I can't really comment. Need a list of what you want from the actual phone.

Cute, huh?

There is one thing I am doing constantly when I am outside my house, it's to listen to music. However I refuse to drain battery on my cellphone just for that. So I would rather have 2 dedicated devices instead.

i had 2 LG and both batteries were bad if you actually use the phone, they die just too fast (short life spam).

Protip: If you forget to turn off your bluetooth, the batteries will drain much faster.

Ok, I was just out with a friend last night who had one of those phones you mentioned. It sucked, plain and simple. You need to spend the extra few bucks to get some sort of android or iPhone.
If all you wanna do is make calls tho then there is not even a reason to get any of the ones you listed.

There is one thing I am doing constantly when I am outside my house, it's to listen to music. However I refuse to drain battery on my cellphone just for that. So I would rather have 2 dedicated devices instead.

1. The charging module (the usb cord) is tiny. You can plug it into any computer to have it charge... or heck just bring the power adapter that plugs it into the outlet; it's seriously TINY... smaller than any other device you may carry with you for music.
2. The batteries do not run as fast as you may think.
3. The iPhone has a massive battery life for just listening to music. Heck, I can probably watch an entire season of anime that I encoded (easy to do, by the way) on it off of one charge. The screen is great for it, too; perfect size for the resolution most anime is in these days.

I know how you're thinking, because I used to be one of those "all a phone needs to do is make calls, right?" people. Until I actually tried, I didn't quite understand. Phones have advanced a ridiculous amount.

Cute, huh?
