Windows Vista came out (with an instant patch for all the big fail) and pretty fast they came out with Windows 7. . .what like 2 years ago or so? and We're talking windows 8 now =,=

Windows XP was an abnormality, let's take a look at the time between each OS (blatantly copied from wiki):

1985 November 20 - Windows 1.01 (2 years)
1987 December 9 - Windows 2.03 (2,5 years)
1990 May 22 - Windows 3.0  (3 years, can be disregarded since NT OS was a parallel production, around 5 years of win 3, before win95 is released.)
1993 August - Windows NT 3.1 (2 years counting win95, 3 years if only counting NT4)
1995 August 24 - Windows 95 (3 years)
1998 June 25 - Windows 98 (2 years)
2000 February 17 - Windows 2000 (NT5) and: 2000 June 19 - Windows Me (1,5 years for win2k and around 1 year for win Me)
2001 August 24 - Windows XP (6 years)
2006 November 8 - Windows Vista (3 years)
2009 July 22 - Windows 7

As you can see, the biggest gap next to Windows XP if you don't count the parallel development of NT systems, is between Win 3.0 and Win95 (5 years). Otherwise 2 -3 years between the release of a new Microsoft OS is actually very normal.

There's still way too many people stuck in the XP mentality due to the hesitant third party adoption of Vista. Don't take it too hard Ace.

By all means, I had XP mentality until win7 came out, it's not that I want to prove something, but rather provide an overview with a timeline so people can see the big picture easier.

Actually i won't change my OS as long i don't need a new one. So i'm sticking with XP for more years or until i buy a new PC which i don't have any reason so far.

Windows 8: We will slap a Metro-style shell on top of the ARM-ported Windows 7 and expect it to sell billions on two-pound tablets that last three hours.

Windows 8 still have the old start menu in addition the metro gui.

My guess is that metro will be the default for tablets and touchscreen monitor systems. Ordinary desktops get the start menu by default.

It looks overly-simplistic... I like the semi-simplistic feel of Win7, but this may be too far...

EDIT: Where the fuck is the desktop?

So... it's an OS that makes iOS look like it's full of "extra" features?

It's a new shell for Windows, like litestep. Explorer.exe will run alongside it. It's going to be the default shell on tablet PCs(which sucked and still sucks, unlike those with "lite" OS).

Have seen the video. The demonstration clearly showed that Windows had to do exactly what iOS doesn't need to do. They demonstrated that Win8 can be used on a huge variety of hardware.

They have showed how windows adapts to the changes in different hardware, be it a touch based pad or a normal notebook. If anything Windows is aiming at being the universal system.

So did vista and 7, but can be run on doesn't mean it runs well. 8 added ARM, which is weaker than Atom( for now at least), to the list but do you really think it can compete with iOS and Android on battery life and hardware requirement? And do I even need to mention the fact that as soon as you open "productive" programs it goes right back to plain old windows? So why even bother? It's not like a business tablet user would want to check his twitter and emails in live tiles then post a pic in Facebook from an app.

What they should have done is to port Windows Phone 7 to tablets instead of bogging down something that is supposed to be light and causal with full(read:fat) Windows.

In my case, I will look if it has any advantages in running games and other resource hungry apps. If not, I will stick to Win7. After all, I never had and never will have those small, weak ultraportable devices that are so small, it's just annoying to fiddle with them.

I do have a bad feeling that Win 8 will shove it's new shell right in my face when/if I install Win8. So the only concern I have is how easily can I remove all that stuff? After all, who would have a touchscreen on a desktop anyway?

Almost reminds me my very fast removal of the gadget support on Win7

Theoretically the device could report its form factor to Windows but it's more likely that it will only be enabled by default on tablets. MS aren't hat dumb, well, I think they aren't.

I don't think Win8 is going to be a better alternative to anything, I'll keep Win7. If anything, I would like a Win7 upgrade where instead of the stupid Windows logo showing booting up, there is the Windows 7 Mascot.

EDIT: Actually, I would like to see a Windows 8 mascot...

This just in. Apparently, Hyper-V 3.0 powered virtualisation could be everywhere in windows 8.

Quote
The proper implementation of virtualisation technologies though would make an already extremely secure operating system even more so, by vastly reducing the surface area for attack.  We could then expect to see Windows overtake other operating systems including OS X and GNU/Linus to become the most secure operating system on the planet.  Now that would certainly be an interesting day.

oh my. interesting day indeed...

Also, there was a new leak a few days ago (6.2.7989, x64, milestone 3 branch). Due to exams, didn't try it yet, but it looks interesting.

More like the OS with illogical defaults, randomly scattered option pages and half a million development teams working on their own stuff with no sense of common goal. :P
