speaking of laptops, you should check the rams on that, the one my dad had a pair of 4GB 1066mhz sticks which were hindering performance, WEI scored 6.4 on it so go figure.

dad swapped the ram kits from his older laptop which had a 2x4GB 1600mhz kit, and things performed pretty good since then, one of the notable speedups were photoshop renders taking nearly half as much time.

Is Windows 8.1 out yet? I know official launch is on 18th oct, but I will be gone by then and won't have the time to do the update? I am having a bit of trouble with Win 8 so thought might as well re-install everything.

You can try one the Preview releases, but if you don't want to deal with the hassle of reinstalling everything again, you just going have to wait until the 18th.

Is the preview release complete? And how long is it valid? I plan ON INSTALLING EVERYTHING. So yeah, if the preview release can last me for a long time, I might get it.

I do believe there are some torrents of the RTM version of 8.1 floating about, but I don't think anyone has created a workable crack yet. Of course, I haven't looked too hard.

As far as the other information goes, all I know is that some goon from SA whose works for Microsoft has confirmed that those using the Preview Release version will have to reinstall all their programs when they update from Preview Release to the official release. Data will be retained, though.

It's probably for the best you wait to do the update rather than going with the Preview Release. Microsoft is basically treating like a public beta (which it is) and does not offer a convenient update path between it and the proper release of Windows 8.1.

It came out at 4am PST. It's not found in the Windows Update panel, but in the Windows Store. It should be the first item that shows up. I'm guessing it might be an anti-piracy measure since accessing the store requires some level of authentication Windows Update may not.

Anyway, doesn't seem much different if you aren't using the Start Screen much, so can't really comment on what it does yet.

Well, they unified their interface design pretty much across the board, if that's what you mean. The XBox and XBone are iterations of the tile menu setup, and the UI shows up on their phones and tablets in addition to the desktop OS.

Microsoft is trying to develop one general aesthetic like Apple's. They're trying to develop an ecosystem around Windows (8.x). Too bad their software is mediocre and their hardware, with few exceptions, crap. I am not expecting too much on this front; they lack the unifying vision that made Apple what it is today.

Also, is anyone having to deal with painfully long download times for the 8.1 upgrade?

I am, korean/asian servers seem to be awfully full at the moment. Will try again later tonight.

Got it early into roll out. Took awhile. Really annoying to download large stuff from the Windows Store. You've got a full screen app with a single tile occupying the screen, no percentage indicator, and the progress bar is actually combined in part with some pre-install setup.

One thing I really hate about Windows 8 is its attitude of not telling you what it's doing or how far along a task is. During the setup process, after the restart, there's a phase where it just says "just setting up a few more things" and the little swirly cursor. It tends to do this with all updates, either not telling you the process it's working on or making the install entirely arbitrary (it likes to install "33%" of an update, restart, and install the other "66%". The numbers clearly have no real value in terms of what it's actually doing.)

I liked Windows 7 telling you how many updates were left to install, that sorta thing. It's minor, the computer is still doing the same stuff, but humans like to know what's going on, even if they aren't influencing it. Designing a UI so that the computer doesn't appear to be doing something is not really an admirable design trait.
