The funny thing is how Microsoft managed to create an OS that gives such a horrible bad first impression. In comparison when I get my hands on some Linux distro, it can be at times frustrating, but still rewarding experience that gives me a sence of exploration. Especially when I get that "Oh, why didn't I think of that" feeling. So far Win 8 has given me "why do you fail so hard!" rage.

I just need to vent a bit while I sit at my fast, responsive desktop with Win7 ultimate installed on it. That notebook was some of the cheapest shit I got my hands on and it was on purpose, so I wouldn't be able to procrastinate with pc games on it. However it makes also OS a bit slow... at least right now when I make it update several things at once, uninstall a bunch of crap and try to figure out how to navigate in that fucking time vampire.

My solution so far was in fact Metro. I went there and pinned down pretty much everything from Control Panel section to taskbar. Temporary solution until I get to a shell replacement. Oh, I also need a way to remove the MS Word looking ribbon interface. Any tips?

It's not irreparable. Just click a default theme or something if it breaks. Make sure to try right clicking on an item in the task bar, that's what I found broke the most.

I think what annoys me the most about Windows 8 is how much it distrusts me as a user. Like a) as if it's not my fucking computer, and b) as if I shouldn't know what it's doing because knowing stuff is confusing.

This will disable it entirely. Think it might require a restart.

meh it broke the color theme on some apps, rendering texts either invisible, or the app itself is broken black.

o.o i think 8.1 had ribbon taken out, since i haven't encountered it yet.
either that or shell took it out.

I'm using Aero by Design and it works fine. Try sorting by date or making sure the description explicitly mentions 8.1.

well there were only two other themes that i took interest in, sadly they don't seem to support 8.1

I switched to Xgreen. I like the accents. Doesn't seem to change my status bars from blue to green though.

Win8.1 has Ribbon automatically minimized. Classic Shell doesn't remove the Ribbon if I recall correctly. I stopped using it after upgrading to 8.1.

Also, I guess I am the only person in the world who doesn't hate the new flat Metro look.

I find I never use the ribbon, and I already had it disabled before I upgraded so I never noticed.

Metro can look ok, depending. But often it's a waste of space. Like when I was downloading 8.1. The entire screen was white except the single tile up the left corner. Kinda a waste of space just because your aesthetic uses large blank spaces.

i'm on 8.1, other than the quote below, 18GB size on x64

i could definitely fit it in a 32GB SSD

edit: ohh and speaking of system resource usages, ram usage

it uses 30% less ram than windows7, defo a big deal.

I got a reason, after it updated to 8.1, the network card stopped working! Bloody wonderful. No I don't have nerves for this, going to install win 7 and hope that laptop has drivers for it. From now on I don't even have to cherry pick functionalities from win8 any more, I can just say "it does not work"

I also noticed after updating to W8.1 that they removed the ability to "forget a wireless network".
Now I have to go to "cmd" and do it manually. Perfect !

BTW Win8 users have about 2yrs until 8.1 is a forced update.

Nothing is "forced", unless it is enforced by law or someone threatens to punch you if you do not do it.

Anyway, Windows 8 still is a tablet-oriented OS and focused on single full screen apps (even Windows 1.0 could have multiple windows, though they couldn't overlap - that was a new feature of Windows 2.0, MS should just call the new OS "Microsoft Window"). You can run multiple programs in desktop mode of course, but the start menu is still full screen (and IIRC it can only contain metro apps - all desktop apps can only have shortcut on the desktop).
ClassicShell solves some of the problems. Copying explorer.exe from Windows 7 cal also be done. That leaves the borderless windows (when I have multiple windows open, I find it useful when I can quickly find the edge of the window), but even WindowBlinds cannot really make the UI look normal (as in Windows 2000 or XP style). Oh, and Server 2012 has the same UI - who the hell uses a touch screen on a server? Or has a good video card there if it's not needed for GPGPU?

I also really disliked the part where Windows 8.1 setup pretty much forces you to sign up for Microsoft account then use that to log in to your own PC. As if Active Directory is not enough. There is a way around that though.

Looks like I'll be able to tell you guys how shitty 8.1 is here in a couple weeks. Oh, I'll hate it... lol I'll probably install one of the start menu replacers within the first minute.
