[HELP] Locking down windows XP
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:54:39 PM »
basically, i need something locks my computer while i'm AFK. or even something that just prevents access to start menu, desktop shortcuts, and systray. i could also use something that makes it impossible to shutdown until a password has been entered or something like that.

if those are not possible. what should i do to my HOSTS file to replace all sites save for BBT with a blank page? (or a malware free shock site, for the lulz)

lately, my sis been pissing me off by letting her kid play with my lappy while i'm AFK. while i don't mind that,
the damn kid (3 y o) eats stuff like cheetos while playing online flash games (in friv.com , IIRc). and when i do come back, he doesn't stop until i distract him with something else.

while you could say i should just keep my laptop away, again, like i said, she does this to piss me off.

Move the bed to your computer, there's nothing stopping her from pulling the powercord wrecking the OS.

theres 4ways, [1]password protected screen saver [2]logout into the user selection with password(you`d notice music still plays even tho you switch, meaning background apps still are working) [3]install a wireless keyboard and bring the keyboard with you, dont forget to disable the onboard keyboard. [4] take the laptop with you.

theres 4ways, [1]password protected screen saver

this is the same as winkey+L, right? the off button's pretty exposed...

same problem as the first.

... just so you know, AFK = asleep. I am nocturnal during the holy week. i'd take my lappy in my dreams if i could, there just no electricity there =_=

create a guest account. password protect your own account. when you leave the laptop, make sure the guest account is logged in. the kid plays, your stuff is untouched, everybody wins!

can't you just password protect your own account without creating another one? that way she might try the off switch once - but if that only results in yet another login screen i doubt she would bother anymore.

alternatively you could - you know - just talk with her?

I think he's talking about his sister getting pissed at him for seeding files and slowing down the rest of his network. Yeah, there is no way to really prevent her from powering off the computer unless you have it with you or it's in a glass box.

^ nope, she's pissed at me for not looking for a job in a fastfood chain. like hell i'd work on that kind of place. i'd rather go for computer related jobs. the bitch wants me dead so she wants me to work in fast food.

alternatively you could - you know - just talk with her?

with a bitch like her, that's not an option.

I don't know if this will give you a better glimpse of the picture but...she was recently hospitalized,
and she didn't want me visiting her. guess what? I didn't want to myself.

we just don't get along, and we probably won't, ever. it's as simple as that.

Maybe she doesn't like you because she found out that your REALLY like Kiss x Sis & Yosuga no Sora and you might have a secret fantasy to do your sister... lol

Trust me, we all have a secret instinct to do your sister... I don't even have a sister! So can I do someone else's sister please? :P

Just kidding, not to make fun of your family problems, but if you can't stand them... move out?

Does she know you're running torrents ..?

'Cause, if not, then the option about a guest account.  Create a user account with limited privileges.  Let her know the password.  Anytime the computer gets rebooted, anytime you log off, she only knows one account to login into.  You can set that account to run torrents, on startup/login (you use utorrent, right?).

All around, about as much win as you can salvage.  The kid gets to play when you're out, your sis is denied the satisfaction of screwing with you (other than the kid is using your system).  Your torrents run under the rights-limited account, which is open and running whenever you're not using it, but at least with fairly minimal security risk.

When you are using it, you login to your main account with the privileges you require for all your other activities.

The real fuck in the ass here is a 3 year old on the system.  At all.  Any system.  I'd seriously punt my sister hard in the twat for that.  No child under about 8 should be on any person's main system ... they should be restricted to a secondary system dedicated as a web browser with everything locked down and vastly restricted browser privileges.  Only Bad Things will happen to any system a kid under about ten is on.

If she wants to trash a system that badly, she needs to fork the cash out to buy and maintain a system that is about to be scrapped by an animal too clueless to understand it's shitting its own pants.

I feel for you, bro.  That girl is too fucking stupid to breed more stupidity into the gene pool.  Family.  Just can't leave the bodies on the curb anymore.  ::)  Usually ...  ;)
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.

^ haha, that's funny. yes she does. she torrents herself on her computer. but anyway, so far, blubart's "no guest account" suggestion is working for me. the kid now watches movies in his mom's ipod touch(or is it iphone 3G?, not that i care) instead of playing on my lappy.

V answered that here...

Get a fucking job and your own place unless you're under 18.
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.

In this economy, dude, you can't be so picky on jobs. I worked in resturaunts for the past 3 years of my life because no comapny would hire me for a tech position. Finally got a spot as an Easy Tech Resident at Staples. While its not the best job in the world for tech, at least its a foot in the door. My experience with customer service at the resturaunts help me get this job.

Anyhow, that aside, too bad you can't just install Windows 7. Much easier in the locking capabilities with 7 than XP, in my experience.
There's nothing here, because I'm too lazy to put something here.

i know. my comp's far too old to install 7 last time i tried, i ended up with a system with missing drivers. well, that was a year ago...

but anyway, i think there's quite a bit difference between fastfoods and restaurants, from what i've heard from people who worked there.
