Unless PSN was Linux based... then yeah, Microsoft could of done it. XD

If PSN is windows based, it's Microsoft's fault for sucking. If it's Linux based, then surely Microsoft hired a team of the best hackers in the world with the best equipment money can buy just to hack the PSN server and tarnish Linux reputation. ;D

I mean honestly, I doubt anyone can ping or see the PSN servers because they are probably mirrored off a switch or server of some kinda so it's not like I can trace route to see where the servers are... I don't know how they got in, but this is pissing me off. PSN better be back online before Duke Nukem Forever comes out (if that ever comes out either).

Quoting Sony, they'll have PSN back up within a week at latest.

They're rebuilding the entire system code from what I hear. Security holes abundant like holes in swiss cheese

Too late for that, they already let info get stolen!

Yeah, too little too late.

I guess something like this will never happen to Steam... cause that would.. you know.... computer hackers would totally never take down the one main source of PC games now.. hah

except, you know, the only information that was leaked was already publically available information and credit card numbers that wont do you shit without the security code?

Passwords? Just fucking change them, only takes 5 minutes, max.

You can probably make fake scannable Credit Cards out of the numbers without the security code.

I highly doubt that.

not to mention it only takes a week to have a new card with new number sent in from your credit card company

So the hacker's go Credit Card/E-mail/home Address etc. Which pisses me off. Sony told every PSN member to change their account info yet you can't even log onto PSN or event the browser based PSN to even do this. Unless their is a way to do this, any one know? Cause I'd like to know.

They said you should change it. Once it is up being implied.

The problem they have with stolen cc info is that a lot of it doesn't work. One time cards, sum cards and expired cards will clutter all their searches. Trying that many combinations on one service will raise red flags galore. Then you have the next step, a card that exists that needs a code. You can probably just pick a number and then just try card after card until you hit one with that code. Which once again will raise flags after a situation like this.

They can most likely get a bunch of CC used. But implying they can use anywhere near all of them is a bit strange.

Edit: I guess you actually said something more along the lines of "they wouldn't be able to use them all anyway", so my comment doesn't apply as much as I thought it might. The CC company would likely disable the account after enough failed transactions. Still, even a mere fraction of authorizations being successful is pretty significant considering the number of subscribers who have card information stored on the servers. Once they have a working set of cards, they could probably go on a spree with those ones, causing no small amount of trouble for the rightful owners (or the card company, or both). /edit

Why wouldn't they just bounce their IP off a few proxies (or even TOR) or use a bot-net to try the cards for them? If they have the experience to hack the PSN servers and grab account info, they're probably not stupid enough to get caught with a sparkly golden trail leading back to them if or when they use the cards. Identify theft is a very real phenomenon, that doesn't seem to have gotten significantly harder with the advancement of technology. A lot of it's probably good old social engineering, but surely technical expertise facilitates things greatly.

I'm just speculating and making stuff up, though, I don't really know what's possible, plausible, or just plain silly. Sorry if I'm making it sound like "the end is nigh, the end is nigh!", or whatever.

Heck, who knows: maybe it's just an MS fanboy who wants to stick it to Sony. Or, -gasp-, a Nintendo* fan!
*"I'm hardcore, I'm hardcore. 13 years old and hardcore. Look at me with my 'moustachio' and red suspenders! ~pika" /no offense intended, it was just an amazingly random thought that came to my head. I actually like Nintendo and the 360 well enough.

Ehh... seriously though, isn't it like one of the first things everyone does with Sony stuff? Figure out the super ridiculous hard way to hack that shit? It's not the first time I've seen a warning about someone accessing some site and stealing information. People are just being too harsh on Sony.... because it's Sony.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Maybe he meant he expected Sony to screw up even worse. /jest

In any case, this is why I don't like it when companies want to collect personal information from me. Any time someone wants my address or full name for "safe keeping" on their servers, and not just for making a purchase, I get antsy. CCs and other billing info I don't care about as much, b/c of fraud protection and the fact I can just replace my cards at the drop of a hat—not to say it isn't a pain, though.

Then there's email spam. How many hidden boxes do I have to un-check to stop getting mail from your affiliates, really! I know the ToS and PP say you can do that, but c'mon. If my only option is to accept or lose access to the service, it's not really much of an option.

Edit: Dammit. No matter how many times I replay it, I can't read all of the text.
