My Game of the Year Mission
« on: April 27, 2011, 06:16:23 PM »
I am on a mission to have played every PC game that has ever won a GotY award. I'm almost there! These are the remaining games I have left to play:

Total Annihilation
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Grim Fandango
Dragon Age
Psychonauts
Assassins Creed II
Batman: Arkham Asylum

I recently completed Mass Effect 2 and am currently playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

You can skip both CoD games without missing anything. Might be able to skip GTA as well without missing anything. :)

A nice idea. Some of those games are quite aged though, so they were GotY, but don't hold up all that well now a days.

Really? Black Ops's campaign had some really good twists while MW2 was an OK of a campaign (No where near the level of what CoD and CoD 2 were). GTA on the other hand was EPIC. Don't listen to him, all the GTAs even since 3 are all awesome games. San Andreas is no exception, but I would understand if you kinda get annoyed at all the commentary in that game... it does get stale. As for the action and what actually happens in the game, it's all top notch.

Really? Games today (past 3 years) really don't compare at all to the games of the past. Half Life 2 is still better than Halo's 2-Reach, the first CoD is still the best out of the entire series, Age of Empires II is better than any RTS post 2000's (with the exception of the Total War series, but that's a slightly different RTS), and Baldur's Gate 2 is still one of the best RPGs.

Problem with most games today is that they aren't hard enough to beat on normal. Hell, even both of those CoD's on the list on Veteran aren't nearly as hard as say... Ghouls and Ghosts. I want games that make me Rage Quit, make me stop playing and do something else, reflect on what I need to do to beat it, then give it another crack.

I've already hit a snag. Grim Fandango doesn't run on 64 bit operating systems. I might be able to use my parents 98 machine though. Fortunately, I think that will be the only one which will have compatability issues.

Yeah, the code in Grim Fandango might have 16 bit in it.. and that will not work on a 64 bit system.

Read his list again. None of the games you mentioned are on his list. :)

I was most specifically thinking of the Total Annihilation to Supreme Commander comparison, TA was a great game when it came out, still fun. SC is still better though, even though it has a large list of flaws.

As for the games you mentioned, it is all subjective if nothing better has been released. Though I do know AoE II is one of the oldest games to still have a competitive scene. There are a few older, not many though.

Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Play Batman: Arkham Asylum. If you have same taste as me you'll be able to finish it in one sitting being left in a state of crying and cursing to Rocksteady Studios for not making the game longer.

Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 should be somewhat short. 10 hours for each game max. depending on your difficulty.

I do agree with TMRNetShark that Black Ops is superior to Modern Warfare 2 in story telling. Though at its release that was not the case. It has gotten a bunch of patches since which really made a difference.

For Grim Fandango try this: http://quick.mixnmojo.com/grim-fandango-setup

Thanks Mcgreag, that worked! The game is running really buggy, with crashes and audio problems that make me restart the game, but it is playable at least.

Came up with another problem. Knights of the Old Republic doesn't work on Windows 7.

It does work for windows 7 (tested a few min ago without any problems at all) but I know a lot of people have had problems with it. It seems that mainly people with ATI cards have problems while nvidia works better.
Here are a thread with some suggestions. It focuses on the Steam version (which is the one I have) but many suggestions are general fixes.

I heard it had problems, but the developers released a patch so people on Steam would be able to play it on Windows 7 x64. I personally use ATI, and I didn't have to do anything extra to be able to play it.
