Some people would also mention the infamous Japanese xenophobia as a darker side, however my opinion is that it is their right to be xenophobic in their sovereign country. However if you plan to move to Japan, that might become your problem.
Hiding their past atrocities from the younger generation. I don't believe it is right to hide or manipulate the history, like taking out their past atrocities and war crimes out of the history school books. China is especially bitter about it btw.
There are other things that I will leave to people to discover for themselves.
yea i meant to mention the first point but its true, every country is like that to some extent. and for the second, i would think any country with a dark past would go through something similar. germany, colombia, south africa. and i know what you mean with china as well. japan did some nasty things to them and china is definitely bitter because of it.
overall though, i think you've helped to bring me back to earth a little. thats kinda what i need when i start thinking like this. ive been having some rational ideas lately, and i think it really just helps to talk about it.
if i'm right there was a topic like this some years ago when i used to download anime, these days i just stick to forums, rarely i got time to watch anime so i guess i'm not an otaku anymore :/.

lol thanks old timer. you have a point in a way. its the way of thinking a la "i think therefore i am". if you have to think about it, chances are the answer's obvious.
concerning the OP, i guess you'd be an otaku if you are obsessed with something to the point you live and breath that something.
Just publicly showing that you love anime/manga does not make you an otaku, unless you go to extremes other people have shown here.
and im happy i dont live and breathe anime, because then i would be able to realize myself the answer to my original question.
